Hulk Hogan's popularity is really astounding when you consider that...
Hogan even though his gimmick is solely based on being a real american is cheered as much internationally as he is cheered in the U.S. Let's start off in Canada where Hogan is always a huge draw and his popularity may only be matched with that of Bret Hart(whether Hogan is a heel or a face) who of course is the best wrestler that Canada has produced according to many. In Japan, Hogan is also huge.It is really astounding on how a pro-american gimmick reaches such huge popularity with such anti-american resentment in this day and age and back in the Vietnam days.

I love Hogan, just when they say it was his last match, then that should have been it.

I'm just surprised he can even make it throught he curtains to get cheered.
I for one never really cared for him that much back in the gimmicky days. That's cause back then I was a huge Taker mark and wanted Taker to win eveyrthing. ![]() |

He was alwyas very pro American, but at the same time, its not like he ever ripped Canada, so fans here would have no reason to hate him. And we still respect American wrestlers, but only the heels, and Hogan.
Bret would get a crazy pop if he ever came back, but I actually think Hogan is more popular, especially in Toronto and Montreal. Bret would probably win the West. There are major factors why Hogan stays over. #1 for most fans he was popular when they were kids, and everyone looks at things they liked in their childhood with rose coloured glasses. The other thing is that Hogan knows how to stay away for a while, then come back and keep doing that. He ensures that people wont get sick of him. Which uisually happens when he'sa round for extended periods of time. And I guess one other thin is that he's easy to cheer for. Nothing complex about his matches, you got a heel, they do something to Hogan, they have a match, Hogan gets beat on, makes comeback after comeback aand finally makes the big one, does his 4 moves and he's out. |

I personally think Bret Hart is Overrated, I've seen a couple of his matches and he is alright, but not worthy of the reputation he receives.

Also wondering why the Vietnam era was brought up, since that was the 60s and Hulkamania was born in the 80s.
If anything, Pro America, Yuppie, Republicanism were so "in" during the Reagan era that anyone in wrestling waving a flag got hugely over. If a giant blond haired brawler who liked rock n roll and loved the good ol U S of A didn't blow up, it would've ben a stunner. Almost seems idiotic that the NWA and AWA didn't catch on ti something like that first. |

He's degenerated to a selfish, greedy egomaniac, but unfortunately, people love him. See, we can see through his persona and realize what he's really become, but most people can't. The masses are ignorant, as they say (or maybe as I say), so they'll continue to cheer him.
There's no denying what he's contributed to pro wrestling... but I wish he'd hang up the boots for good, because there's nothing he can do anymore. |

Hogan was thumping prayer and the red, white and blue constantly. Austin was an anti-authority character with a redneck face. Hogan was a one trick stereotype. The redneck patriotism (My way or the highway, USA! USA!), and that's the difference. Stone Cold was ALWAYS a redneck in his gimmick. Come on, what about Austin doesn't scream hick? |

Unless they were commies, arabs, foreigners, or anyone we were bullying. Oh wait, that's basically just like now. Yeah, our popularity was huge at the time. Between the fourtiues and the seventies, we upset the balance of power on four continents. We were installing dictators and overthrowing democracies. We were beloved mostly at gunpoint, by regimes who were installed becuase they were convenient to us. We were considered global bullies, but nobody had the firepower to take us on, except the USSR (Before they bankrupted themselves). YEAH. GO AMERICA. |

It's not the whole "pro-American gimmick that gets cheered by anti-American crowds" thing that bugs me. It's the fact that Canada and Japan take pride in producing the best technical wrestlers on Earth, yet cheer Hogan, who is one of the worst grapplers ever. That baffles me to this day.

Canadians and Japanese people are every bit as stupid as Americans. It's just taht since they have better production of these starts, they normally don't look like the idiots they are. |

Yeah Hogan is overrated in the ring, yes his workrate is shit, hell today Vince would tell him to leave and come back with some abs.
With that said, only one guy in the history of the business can say that they drew as much or more than Hogan, and thats Austin. People come to see him, because back in the 80s the guy was larger than life. |
