Any idea why a .wmv file wouldn't want to play in windows media player?
So yeah, I have this .wmv file, right. It works fine on my home computer, but I put it on my laptop and every time I try to play it it comes up with:
"The file you are attempting to play has an extension that does not match the file format. Playing the file may result in unexpected behaviour" I've already downloaded that Xvid codec on both my home and laptop computers. So any other reasons why it wouldn't wokr? |

It means that it's not a wmv file. rename it to mpg or avi and see if it works better.

it's named as a wmv file
I can take a text file and rename the extension to a .wmv but it's not gonna really be a wmv file do what the funkster says and try renaming it to mpg, mpeg or avi |

If you're running XP:
Control Panel --> Folder Options --> View tab --> Under the advanced settings box, un-check the box for "Hide extensions for known file types" Then find your file and change the extension (the part after the period) to mpg, avi, or whatever |

ok, now it's saying something about being compressed by a codec not supported by windows media player.
In which case, I am fucked? |

if all else fails
http://videolan.org or direct link to installer: http://www.videolan.org/mirror.html?...8.4a-win32.exe that player will play almost anything without any codecs If you really want to use media player you'd have to find out what codec the movie has, and install that codec. |
