PS3 in November
It was confirmed today that Sony had delayed the PS3 launch until November, at which time they will launch worldwide. The Xbox 360 did the same thing but Sony says they plan to avoid the shortages.
Some key notes of the conference:
Here is a link to it all. |

March 15, 2006 - Sony Computer Entertainment's answer to Xbox Live is at last coming into light. While previous comments from company executives were unclear on the matter, company president Ken Kutaragi today assured members of the press, 3rd party companies and investors that the PS3 would be seeing a service similar to Microsoft's. The service, which is currently going under the working name of "PlayStation Network Platform," will see its service kick off at the PS3 launch in November. Basic service will be free of charge initially, although it should be noted that Kutaragi did not comment on what exactly constitutes "basic service." Business will take place on the open internet, suggesting that the service will be more open than Xbox Live. The service will offer full support for Online title development, providing necessary functions and services for commerce and community. Sony made note of some of the major features that all Online titles will be able to access: Communication/Community: Voice/Video chat Messaging Lobby/Matchmaking Score/Ranking Friend list/Avatar Game data upload/download Commerce: Shop (accessible from inside games) Content Download Micro Payment Subscription Entitlement (user access rights) management Account: User Registration Login ID/Handling of name issues Sony didn't announce an Xbox Arcade style game download system, but it did state that games will be bootable from the hard disk, noting this as part of the commerce opportunities for the system. Sony Computer Entertainment will take care of investment and operation of a commonly used infrastructure. However, SCE will be allowing licensees to connect their own game servers to the network. SCE's network, with data centers throughout the world, is being developed in conjunction with Sony Online Entertainment. Kutaragi's comments from today's PlayStation Business Briefing in Tokyo set the framework for a hefty Online system on Sony's next generation beast. |

When the consoles were all announced last year and everybody was making a big fuss, I was more impressed by the PS3. However, after a year of no news, delays, etc, I've lost all insterest in it. I've got the "I'll believe it when I see it" attitude now. If it hits shelves in Nov and it has all the features they're promising, good for them.

I believe the PNP will be better than Xbox Live simply because of what Sony has at its advantage. For example, they could make some of Sony Pictures trailers exclusive to the PS3 (Spiderman 3 is what I was thinking of). Not to mention they have been working with Macromedia on a Flash Lite that could be in every hard drive that would allow you to download any flash game you wanted onto your PS3 and pretty much make your own Xbox Live Arcade.
I'm kind of worried about this hard drive thing but if they do decide to not bundle them I can see it turning out like the 360 and have two different bundles. I'm disappointed there was no price anouncement but the rest excites me. |

60 gigs is pretty big for a console hard drive, I think. The 360's is 20gb. Overkill, much?
I mean, are game saves aren't very big, and how much music do you really need for your custon soundtrack? I know there's probably things like downloadable games and extra maps for FPS games, but come on. They're just driving up cost unnecessarily. |

Yeah, my laptop has less than 40 GB on it and I still have about 9 or so left. That includes all my music and porn, and there is no way I have games taking up more space than those two things.

It's big because it's meant to be used as a media center. So that way you could download or store your videos, tv shows, movies, music, games, etc.

Well fuck. Just make a PS3 for launch. After that go ahead and release the ridiculous "media centre" version with all the knick knacks and dood dads that syncs up with every electronic item in your house for an inflated price.
I mean they already did it with those limited edition "special color" versions of the PS and PS2. |

Larger disc space=more size of everything, including saves. Remember, the size difference between the PS1 and PS2 saves was pretty big, in a jump from 2 GB games (The largest I saw was three discs) to a 9 GB max. The larger the game, the more information you need to save, the larger the files, even if not booting from the disc. |

I'm aware of the game save issue. When you say booting from the hard drive, do you mean that the game you buy is an install disc and the actual game is on the PS3? Because I have a PC for that.

The week 360's came out people were buying them for $900 and more in some places.
The fools. Even if the system had great launch games and I had the money I wouldn't pay that amount. And for Madden no doubt... |
