Gregory Helms

how would rate Gregory Helms' first year away from the Hurricane Gimmick. I think he has been excellent this year since he moved to SD! after winning the CW title. He has improved in the ring and generally never has a bad match. His feud with Matt Hardy was excellent, with every match being entertaining (thats very rare in WWE nowadays).

JBL is right, Helms is the best kept secret on SD!

I agree with you, Helms since losing the hero gimmick, and turning heel has done well for himself, the CW title, and SD!.

I 'd The Hurricane gimmick, S.H.I.T was not so hot though.

Hurricane mini fued with The Rock was amazing.

Gregory Helms is an amazing wrestler. The WWE has fucked up with him in the past (why the FUCK did he lose to Jerry Lawler?), yet he still manages to keep a level of cool about himself. It'll never be too late for Helms to make it.

I think the WWE should really focus on how Ric Flair told him that if he dropped The Hurricane gimmick, he could be something. Remember that segment on RAW?. Just play it, and have it sponsored by JBL, in support of Gregory Helms. They could also point out he defeated The Rock, and held the World Tag Team Championship with Kane. Both those accomplishments sound mighty impressive.

I think next year will really be where Helms either distinctively rises to the upper echelon, or disappears into obscurity. The WWE obviously has a lot of faith in him, giving him a huge run with the Cruiserweight Title, putting him in a match with DX on PPV, and letting The Hurricane character take off as much as it did. He's also signed on for something ridiculous, like five years. I think he can make it to the big dance.

I love him. He could be credible in the main event scene. He'd be very believable too. He's not that small, and has shit loads of talent and charisma. WWE seems to be pretty high on him right now, which makes me happy. I agree that 2007 could be his defining year for better or for worse. Let's hope better.

First he has to make a singles career outside of the cruiserweight division. If he can get over in non-title fueds then maybe, maybe they would consider pushing him for the US title. If that works extremely well, then maybe, and a big maybe, consider pushing him against a main eventer to test the waters.
Its a big if, I like him but hes not gonna wake up one morning and get a call from Vince that he would like to push him as a main eventer. He'll probably never see a title belt other than the one he has now.

In theory, and only in theory, he could be a decent mid-carder. Logically, he has feuded and held his own against Matt Hardy, who has feuded against Edge. Matt, along with Jeff, just beat MNM, and Nitro is a former IC champion. Granted, it's a stretch and WWE doesn't use logic, but logically if Helms can hold his own against Hardy, he can hold his own against Nitro, Edge, etc.

Its very rare that a cruiserweight can break into the big time. Jericho, Eddie, Mysterio are the only ones really to have done it. And as much as I like Helms, I dont think hes on the level with them.

I agree with Afterlife and Chavo, the truth lies somewhere between

Yea, of the 30-40 champions under the WWE banner (maybe more), 3 or 4 of them were "small."
Its an unspoken rule that it truly takes a remarkable performer to overcome and break the mold. Basically Eddie, Shawn, Jericho and Rey became top guys because they were just too damn over for them to deny, and they made themselves seem credible in a world of giants. Personally, I love an underdog champion and I'm not a big fan of big dominant ones.

I don't think most people think of him as a "little" guy.

I know he's hardly 7' and 400 lbs, but when people talk about "little" wrestlers, I don't think he springs to mind.

Helms could be a lot better if only they'd have him actually defend the belt instead of basically letting him sit there with it for 10 months...make him face Matt Hardy, London or Kendrick and see how he does.

The Cruiserweight title and division isn't booked very well. Its been just placed on him for the time being. Its the same as when Malenko held the light-heavyweight title for a year.

Yeah. It would be nice to have someone new as the CW champ, but I mean, c'mon, Jimmy Wang Yang? He's only been around 1-2 months, and has lost to Sylvan among others and gotten maybe 1-3 victories in his career, so that must qualify him for a title shot at Armageddon, right? Oh, well, he'll probably either get his ass handed to him or Helms will lose the title in some ridiculous fashion or another..to a rookie!

Jimmy Yang is not a rookie, chief. The character is new; that is all.

Dude. Regardless of what I say, you will take it in an entirely different direction. You seem to know exactly what I mean, even when I say it means something completely different.

So I'm just lauging at the one time you seemed dumbfounded. OR at least, unable to make up an argument.

Great idea, because JBL really does support Helms during his matches... that would work even more.

I get that, but the gimmick seems to be based a little bit too much on the Jamie Noble character. The fact that he calls himself a redneck, and has a "girlfriend" who seems to be a hotter, more blonde version of Nidia, just gives the impression that nobody gave much thought to how his gimmick should work. Also, he looks a little to oriental to be a true redneck, as JBL has said a couple of times.

The two are only really superficially similar. Yang is a pisstake, a comical sort of character who tries really hard to be one of the boys...

That's why he drills us with his redneck machismo. It's like Masters working out to hide his homosexuality.
