source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter Rey Mysterio was originally scheduled to wrestle Edge at the Great American Bash, but a decision was made on Sunday, July 1 to pull him from the match. They gave the challenger's role to Kane at the next night's SmackDown taping instead. Vince made the call to pull him from the match for a number of reasons. Mysterio had given them the indication that he wouldn't ready to return to the ring by the time of the Great American Bash pay-per-view. Rey is trying to push his return to August, as he feels he'll be ready by then. However, he is getting pressure to return now because WWE officials believe that the SmackDown roster is thin. Kane's program with Edge may actually be a few month program. Vince thinks that the fans would love to see Kane chase Edge for the title.

Basically because they said the SD roster is thin, yet it was THEIR OWN DECISION to send 3/4ths of what was SD's heart to RAW and ECW. It's their fault that SD's roster is "thin", and now they want to say that without looking in the mirror and saying who caused that to happen.
