submission has to look painful, also helps if it can be quickly applied

pinfall finisher needs to have a lot of impact and come out of nowhere

but the bottom line is it has to connect with the crowd. They have to be signaled to know shits about to go down when it happens, or freak out when its out of nowhere.

Such abortions as the Hogan leg drop, the stinkface, the mandible claw with socko, and The People's Elbow are great finishers. They're awful moves, but they're awesome because of the intangible that is connecting with the crowd

I'd say the canadian destroyer is a prime example of how none of that matters. Sure it looks hard to do like most of the spot monkey shit, but it will never be nearly as over as sweet chin music or the people's elbow,which anyone can do, and are normally just regular ass moves in a moveset

It's because the wrestler who does the move and the way it's booked have 95% to do with it being successful.

There are a number of things to consider, most have been touched on.

1) How big of a wrestler are we talking about? If they guy is like 5'11" 205 lbs. No one is going to buy a powerbomb as a finisher. Vice versa, a giant doesn't really need to be doing a really techinal move.

2) What is the over all move set of the wrestler/what is their style? For example, JBL is a big brawler, it make since he has the Clotheline from Hell, while on the other hand you have Scott Stiener, who is just as big as JBL, but a clotheline as a finisher doesn't fit a guy with a rather techincal move set, it makes since he has a submission hold for a finisher.

3) Does it fit the wrestler's gimmick? For example Rhino is the man beast. The name rhino alone makes you think of a charging beast, the gore is prefect for him, it would totally detract from him if his finisher was anything else, including but not limited to a powerbomb.

4) How many other assholes are using it, and does yours look better? For example, Chavo, RVD, and Christian all use a Frog Splash. Only RVD's looks good. Batista, Nash, Aswesome Kong, and Undertaker all use a powerbomb, but luckly they are all different, Batista has some nice impact with his sitout. The lazyknife lazybomb has an effortless easy. There is a sick satisfaction watching a big black woman destroy barbie dolls with a powerbomb. And Undertakers has a certain still to it.

5) Can you apply it safily and easily every match?

I would say the only criteria would be that it can be applied to anyone.

Moves like the Stunner, Leg Drop, People's Elbow, SCM, etc can all be done to any wrestler regardless of their size.

Whereas a move like the Canadian Destroyer is sick looking, but there's no way it could be done to say the Big Show, so its tougher to get over.

Everything else is irrelevant.

People's Elbow proves a move doesnt have to look like it hurts.

Moves like the Flying Elbow or Swanton Bomb cant be done from anywhere, but they all got over.

Cena's submission move looks terrible, but as long as guys like Hunter and Shawn are willing to tap out to it, it'll get over.

The only other thing that I think matters for an effective finish, is having some type of set up to go into the move. If you watch Shawn Michaels doing the Superkick, it didnt look that great and wasnt that over. When he started adding the foot stomps or going over to the corner to set it up, it got more over.

I think fans like knowing that its coming so they can get ready to pop for it.

ive always loved the downward spiral/flatliner. it fulfilled all my requirements for a decent finisher and kanyon and edge pulled it off well.

I'd honestly say that the Banzai Drop was a great finisher.

What's more devastating than a morbidly obese Samoan Japanese Man slamming all his weight onto you? And the move made sense BECAUSE he was Morbidly Obese. Do you really see X-Pac sitting on you from the second rope as a logical finisher? Hell no! Only a hideous Fatass can pull that move off and not look stupid in the process.

Like I've said. Yoko was really only famous for 3 things.

1. Being Really Fat
2. Being WWF Champion
3. Dying From Being Really Fat.

I think you guys are missing the point of The People's Elbow. The Rock's actual finisher was The Rock Bottom. I think the People's Elbow was that asshole's way of saying "well, I've already hit the Rock Bottom, so it's obviously over, so I'm gonna dance around a bit for the crowd". Great character builder, that combo.

I don't think all finishers need to be hit out of anywhere. Sometimes that helps during a back-and-forth match, but some moves look fucking awesome with a long set-up. And it makes sense, because a "finisher" should finish a wrestler. By that point, they should be worn down to the point where there can be some time taken to put them into position for it.

I honestly think BDC had a great summary, and The CyNick is right, crowd connection is the most important thing.

That's why a move that is needlessly flashy, seemingly wastes time, or is a standard move when anyone else does it, can be an amazing finishing move.

Also, I agree with 'Kai, The Banzai Drop was a fucking awesome finishing move. An massive man jumped from the second rope down on top of your chest. Not only would that hurt like hell, cause injury, and wind the fuck out of you; but it landed in a pinning predicament, and you then have to somehow get 520lbs off should chest and shoulders, often with your arms trapped underneath that weight. A fucking fantastic finisher.
