Doink the Clown was the mother fucking man.
I've been watching a lot of WWE 24/7 Online, and recently I've been watching Raw in order from episode one. Doink was a pretty big part of the early evolution of Raw, and everything from the way they debuted him to his character to his ring work was just absolutely fantastic. Even though face Doink was lame as fuck, heel Doink, I have just decided, is my favorite character of all time. Use this thread to discuss the greatness that was this guy....

I have been saying this for awhile now, that they should bring back heel Doink(s) on ECW/Smackdown.

I dunno, they've made such a mockery out of the character now that I'm not so sure it could work. Maybe if they tweaked the character to something a bit different with a different look and name, it could work, but it still wouldn't be as awesome as the original.

Also, rep for anybody who can post a good version of Doink's heel theme in this thread.

I was just watching Doink versus Marty Jannetty in a best two out of three falls match from Raw. Good shit.

Also, Doink was way cooler when he had the saggy hair instead of the poofy hair. You could keep tweaking his costume and such to make his wig be different colors.

I will later. PROMISE.
Anyway, I remember being absolutely shocked when he beat down Crush with that fake arm when I was a kid. I had no clue he was going to be a wrestler. Also, he used to scare me. |

I had just watched IT, and then the next morning Doink was on Superstars for the first time......
Fucking Clowns are creepy. What an amazing gimmick, I honestly wouldnt have minded a Heel Doink vs Face Bret title program. Another dropped ball by early 90s WWE |

Maybe even just put Charlie Haas under the Doink mantle; after years of not getting over he loses his mind and snaps into Doink.

Yeah, but he could be an edgier, Heath Ledger Doink as opposed to a goofier (yet still dangerous) Jack Nicholson Doink. I'd be all for that. He's already started losing his mind with the luchadore mask gimmick.

Also, I heard Matt Borne played a psycho version of himself/Doink in ECW called Borne Again where half of his face was painted like Doink and the other half was not painted. I would LOVE to see footage of that in action. Anybody know where I could find it?

Quiet you. I'm talking about how they've brought Doink back so many times as a joke, when back in the day, he was actually a credible threat whom could be taken as seriously as a clown could. Are you familiar with his heel work from his first run by any chance?

The Stump Puller was the most badass submission move. It's amazing no one else has ever done it on TV.

I remember he used to laugh into the camera, then it would slowly become crying, and the camera would tip. Creepy shit. It was a great heel gimmick, and he had some of the better storylines during his heel time. Then he turned into an actual clown and, well nobody enjoyed actual clowns when they were younger anyway....
What was his finisher? The Whoopee Cushion, maybe? Was is ass first into a guy off the top ropes? |

The Whoopie Cushion was his face finisher where he would jump off the top rope and land on a fallen opponent's chest, ass first. The Stump Puller was his heel finisher which was a submission where he would sit on his opponent's shoulders, grab one of his legs, and pull it up over his head. Sometimes he would fall to the mat himself for added effect. It was pretty awesome.

Oh, right.
Thanks. I'll really have to youtube some Doink matches. I only remember the storylines and the gimmick, none of his ring work. Any recommended matches? |

Versus Marty Jannetty in a two out of three falls match on Raw from 1993.
I'm watching him versus Kamala right now. |

This feels ridiculous. I'm going through all of the episodes of Raw in order and watching only Doink matches right now.

Amazing finish to the match with Kamala....Doink comes to the ring carrying a gift wrapped box. He teases Kamala with it at the beginning of the match, but snatches it away. Doink sets the gift down in a corner, and when Kamala goes to reach for it, Doink attacks him. The gift is all but forgotten about until Kamala knocks Doink out of the ring. Kamala follows Doink outside of the ring and Doink runs around the outside until he's back by the gift. He gives the gift to Kamala finally, and while Kamala's opening the gift, Doink slides back in the ring while the referee counts Kamala out and Doink laughs his ass off in the ring.
There's a little spot after that where Kamala extracts a slight modicum of revenge, but Doink still got the duke. Love it. |

yes, he was the man. And no, please do not bring back heel Doink because heel Doink was nothing without Borne behind the makeup. The guy was perfect for the whole. He was an old school veteran at that time working a lot of the territories before and he understood pyscology. Nobody expected the character to get over like it did. Borne took a stupid clown gimmick and turned it into something with multiple dimensions. When you watch the match, look at all the little things Matt does before, during and after the match. I loved how he would smile and laugh walking down the isle and then when he got real close to the camera, he would stare you right in the face with that evil grin.
Borne was tremendous. Unfortunately, he was so good that the fans started cheering him and that was it. Well that and his drug habits. The Classic Superstars line is releasing the Heel Doink figure as part of the next lineup btw |
