Cena Takes Another Shot At Rock, Cringes At Own Merchandise
By Ryan Clark on Saturday, April 11th, 2009 at 3:15 PM EST

The latest issue of ESPN: The Magazine has an interview with John Cena called “7 Things You Should Know About Being a WWE Superstar.” Here is the interview in its entirety:

7 Things You Should Know About Being a WWE Superstar

1. Writers write, fighters fight.
“I see myself as an actor, and I choose not to have much input in my story. So I find out only a few hours before the broadcast what will happen. The creative team doesn’t know inside-the-ring stuff, though. They tell us who’s going to win or be disqualified and we take it from there.”

2. I had to find myself.
“One of the big reasons for my success is I get to be me. At first, I was a white rapper thug from the mean streets of West Newbury, Mass. Some fans hated me but that’s how it goes. We have guys who save the day and others who deserve to get hit. But once I got in the door, I spent the next four years tranforming into John Cena.”

3. We’re more than just action figures.
“I try to manage my likeness, but the WWE does a lot of licensing, so I end up seeing a lot of products that make me cringe. I’m all for merchandising, but John Cena car floor mats or nesting dolls don’t seem right.”

4. En Garde? Always.
“Most people I meet try to wrestle me. It happens at least once a day - especially at the airport. When I’m carrying the champion’s belt in my bag, it usually leads to a ‘random’ search. Everyone crowds around, and someone says, “Let’s fight.” I’m like, “I’m just trying to catch a flight.”

5. There are no timeouts.
“I once tore a pectoral muscle doing a routine hip throw. There was 18 minutes left in the fight. I figured since I was going to the hospital afterward anyway, I might as well finish. You think it’s all painless, but this stuff can hurt extremely badly.”

6. Things change - unless they don’t.
“Consumers are smarter now, so we admit what we do is entertainment. And we’ve changed programming. But the bones are the same. Pro wrestling like action films, is still about good vs. evil.”

7. I won’t bite the hand.
“A lot of wrestlers reach a point where they feel it’s not cool to be in WWE. Not me. I can do movies and work full-time here. Why would I ever say it’s not good enough?”

Yeah cena, or should i say captain bland needs to fuck up. Johnson made a career choice for better money, less time on the road and not being half crippled in later years.

Id say if cena was being offered $10-$15 million for movie roles he'd drop WWE at the drop of a hat, unfortunately for us thats not gonna happen though.

Looks like the WWE hired a loyal dog (nothing wrong with that). But the fact of the matter is that we all know that Dwayne is not coming back and Cena's whining is getting a little bit lack luster.

As well as the official wwe bore he seems to be the official wwe crybaby. I dunno wtf Johnson leaving has to do with cena taking some kind of "personal offence".

I am not a fan of Cena, but I think he is right in this. Why should The Rock just cut off the place where he was made. I know he is not coming back, but he is making it seem like his wrestling days never happened.

I completely agree. It's almost as if The Rock is embarrassed by his 'roots.' I get the fact that The Rock wanted to make a career change from wrestling to acting. I get the fact that it's false of Cena to say that Rocky's passion was always acting (I think it had more to do with the fact that The Rock's passion grew into something else).

However, I think it's messed up that The Rock barely even acknowledges his time in the WWE....and doesn't do anything whatsoever to support the industry or the company nowadays.

I would probably do the same thing Rock did in taking the money, but I would not just leave out the old part of my life. I would not make it seem like it didn't happen. That's what the Rock did.

I don't blame Cena, for the record. It's obviously just Vince being butthurt over Rock.

If you think Cena has control over what he says in a big media outlet like ESPN you're crazy. WWE controls that shit very closely.

I will say this... I wouldn't fault the Rock too much for going off to Hollywood, except for this:

For those of you who can't be arsed to watch it, there's a whole lot of shit in there about the Rock going on about how WWE is his home and he'll always be about WWE... yeah, look where he is now. You can say what you want about "it's a promo" or whatever, but pay close attention. That's an unscripted promo involving Dwayne Johnson telling the audience what's what. Apparently. You don't want to wrestle anymore, FINE, but for him to go spouting all of that business and a few years later appear on WWE programming to promote his most recent film, with the words "Hi WWE fans, this is Dwayne Johnson," it's going to leave a bad taste in my mouth.

As for Cena, it's perfectly okay by me for him to remind te fans that he wants to stay in WWE. Cena isn't the darling of all fans, or even as many as the Rock was. It's perfectly reasonable that the fans might think that, as Cena keeps doing movies, he'll eventually make the same transfer that Mr. Johnson did. I'm no fan of Cena's last few years, but he does his job and puts everything into it. He's going to be around for a long time yet, because he's a reliable worker, and because he seems far less likely to run off to Hollywood or MMA or any of it, and less likely to shit in a bag or publicly embarass himself, than a lot of guys out there.

While I'm on a roll (and decently buzzed,) look at the track record of guys WWE has tried to hang their hat on in the past few years. Eddie Gurrerro & Chris Benoit: both dead. RVD: smoked his main event push out the door. Brock Lesnar: quit. Angle: went nuts. Lashley... I'm not entirely sure how to describe his departure, but he definitely didn't cut it. I wish as much as anyone that Cena were pushed in a sensible and tolerable fashion, but you little sycophants dangling from the nutsack of the IWC need to shut up already.

What is it that everyone wants The Rock to do to support wrestling roots? Hang a big neon sign from himself that blinks "I USED TO WRESTLE!" when he gives interviews pertaining to his movie career?

He made a business decision, and everyone seems to have accepted that he isn't coming back. Why is it so hard to accept that he isn't even the Rock anymore? The Rock was a character that he created in the WWE and now he had dropped it to be Duane Johnson. Would you really insist that Emilio Estevez be called Coach Gordon Bombay for the rest of his life because you love the Mighty Ducks?

Yeah that is a pretty lame comparison really. There's a difference, a pretty big one, between a movie actor and a wrestler. Look at it this way; when the Rock did a personal appearance working for WWE, was he advertised as Dwayne Johnson, or the Rock? Was Austin Steve Williams, or Stone Cold Steve Austin? Etc, etc.

Tedious, I don't get your point. They are all characters portrayed by people. Dwayne Johnson doesn't want to be Dwayne Johnson portraying The Rock portraying Captain Kangaroo for the rest of his life.

Besides, most people still know him as The Rock. Whenever one of Johnson's movies come out, I hear that it "has The Rock in it." I just heard a radio advertisement yesterday for The Race to Witch Mountain "starring The Rock." His past is following him, he doesn't need to constantly talk about wrestling. It's not like the guy has never done an appearance with the WWE since he left the company, either.

His last one was about two years ago. That's not too fucking long when you think about it. Between making movies, spending time with your family, and doing appearances to promote your movies, that time would just evaporate before your eyes. Johnson has been getting pretty consistent work as an actor. If Johnson gets some down time, just see what he does.

He should get a WWE Logo tattooed on his forehead as a constant reminder to people. It is the least he could do. ANYTHING ELSE IS UNACCEPTABLE.

No he's not. That's entitlement speaking. He's not erasing them, he's just moving on. As long as he keeps the wrestling name and motif, he's just a novelty.

Get over it, he was great in the ring and on the mic and most certainly would of gone down as quite possibly the best ever. But that's now what he wanted. He's not the first wrestler to try acting, but he is the frist to be really successful at it.

You can't tell me that if Hogan could actually act that he wouldn't of left for good in 1994.

Did Domino's make you a worldwide star? Is Domino's solely responsible for you having a fantastic career today? Has Domino's given you everything you have?

If the answer to any of that is yes, then that is very, very sad.
