An unexpected choice for the 2010 Royal Rumble Winner
I'm not suggesting this will actually happen, but the idea randomly crossed my mind, and the more I considered it the more I think it would actually make a kind of bizarre, twisted sense if it WERE actually to happen. I'm fairly certain that Shawn Michaels will win the 2010 Royal Rumble, and then go on to face The Undertaker at WrestleMania, but what if, what if, the WWE shocked everyone and this man won the Rumble and challenged The Undertaker for the World Heavyweight Title:
![]() I mean, think about it: * Triple H and Shawn Michaels are both apparently high on the guy, like they are Sheamus (the current WWE Champion). Now, that doesn't mean The Undertaker is high on him, but if HBK and Triple H have valid points to seeing him as a future star, surely The Undertaker would see something in him too, right? * It's not like this would be put forward as the "drawing match" of the PPV. If you had Taker vs. McIntyre on the card, then you'd also likely have matches like Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels, John Cena vs. Batista II, Chris Jericho vs. Edge, CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio and the special attraction of Vince McMahon vs. Bret Hart. * Recently, The Undertaker got somewhat dragged into the Bret Hart/Vince McMahon story, taking Bret Hart's side. Drew McIntyre has been "hand-picked" by McMahon as a future World Heavyweight Champion. It'd also be like representatives of the two men fighting each other. * Drew McIntyre would make history by not only being the first Intercontinental Champion to win the Royal Rumble, but by being the youngest man ever to ever do so at 24 years of age. If he then went on to become World Heavyweight Champion (hypothetically), he would technically be older than Randy Orton when he did it, but they could still play off that dynamic of McIntyre only being 24 when he won his first World Title. If McIntyre and Orton ended up on the same brand after the draft (most likely SmackDown!), I could actually see a feud between the two going down quite well. * Sheamus has received a massive push with Triple H behind him. While McIntyre is no doubt doing well for himself (IC Champion; banging Tiffany), he has in no way received the same treatment that Sheamus has. Maybe it is because SmackDown! has more logical booking, or because the reach of HBK and Triple H don't reach that far -- but maybe they are just saving up McIntyre's "monster push" for something like this. It seems weird that Sheamus became a World Champion on the night McIntyre won his first secondary title. * McIntyre has been built-up fairly well. He's only lost two matches, and both of those were tag bouts where he didn't take the fall. JTG and Chris Jericho did, if I remember. The WWE have not played it up too much so far, but they know that McIntyre is yet to lose a singles match, and they are protecting him a good deal. When Chris Jericho is taking the fall for you, there must be something going on. The WWE could almost apply a "streak vs. streak" tag to an Undertaker vs. Drew McIntyre match. * Shawn Michaels has reportedly been one of Drew McIntyre's most vocal supporters. In recent years, HBK has seemingly been one to step out of the spotlight and let other guys win the World Titles, etc. He is also the one gunning for the match against The Undertaker. If he is McIntyre's biggest supporter, surely he would like to work with him, right? They could do something like Drew McIntyre vs. Shawn Michaels for the Royal Rumble title shot at Elimination Chamber -- where HBK could put over McIntyre strong. * If they kept the IC Title on McIntyre, they could do Title vs. Title at WrestleMania between The Undertaker and Drew McIntyre. It is something that happened at WrestleMania two decades previous, and it would be a huge boost to the IC Title (which they clearly value more than the US Title). The Undertaker has also never been IC Champion. The WWE could advertise the match as "history will be made." Either McIntyre ends the streak, and becomes a mega-star (in a kayfabe sense), or The Undertaker wins the IC Title for the first time in his epic career. * He's like a big Brian Kendrick. * What else is McIntyre going to do at WrestleMania? Feud with a mid-carder? Lose Money in the Bank? It doesn't seem fitting for the guy when Sheamus is running around as WWE Champion. Since he's re-debuted for the WWE, there has no doubt been a huge push of support behind McIntyre. In something like his second match, he qualified for the SmackDown! Bragging Rights team. This was amended, but it's obvious there is more than one person backstage who is in love with Drew McIntyre. * Pat Patterson traditionally has a heavy-hand in booking the Royal Rumble. Could you honestly tell me that Patterson would not like to fuck that man? It's not a very likely scenario at all, don't get me wrong. I'm just spouting conspiracy theories here. But if you analyse dark horse picks, McIntyre has got more going for him than most ever do. Imagine this: The Final Four in the Rumble come down to Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Drew McIntyre and someone else. Could be anyone, but let's say Ted DiBiase or Kofi Kingston. The fourth man gets eliminated, and eventually, Shawn Michaels manages to eliminate his tag team partner, Triple H. The Game is pissed off, and does a Hulk Hogan/Sid Justice type thing, where he distracts HBK long enough for Drew McIntyre to zoom in, and dump HBK from behind. Shawn Michaels is so close to getting his opportunity to face The Undertaker, but he misses out. This could all be compounded by having McIntyre enter fairly early (perhaps a few spots after Triple H). You could also have McIntyre take a few big players out of the Rumble -- The Great Khali, Big Show, his "brand contemporary" in The Miz, an exhausted John Morrison. Longetivity + some solid eliminations could get McIntyre to the point where he doesn't look like the biggest fluke winner in history, and has a great deal of actual credibility behind him. HBK can then challenge the man he is secretly grooming behind the scenes for his title shot, and somehow the match can be made (perhaps with Stephanie McMahon granting it to Michaels, causing *gasp* tension between DX..."Why are you giving this to Shawn, Steph?"). McIntyre then keeps his streak going against Shawn Michaels at Elimination Chamber, and by this point, McIntyre looks like a world-beater. But yeah...Cena wins. ![]() Pfft |

I also find it weird that this talk of "building up new stars" started up almost because of Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker stealing the show and them being almost ready to move on. Now, one year later, and they are ready to offer up the same (admittedly classic) match again? Let's just say I would be shocked, but I wouldn't be surprised...or would I be surprised but not shocked?

I don't mind McIntyre, but I'd probably be pissed if he won the Rumble.

Eh I have never really gotten into McIntyre. I find him still very green, and I don't see what everybody else does. I may eventually. With all of the talk of WWE wanting to make new stars it just doesn't make sense to me to push Sheamus or McIntyre to the moon when you have so many more capable people for the job.
For instance... Ted Diabiase is somebody I could see winning the Rumble and going on to face Orton at Wrestlemania, it is a guy they have been working on hardcore for over a year and he is probably just getting ready for the big push. Another choice I think would be really cool would be CM Punk. Especially if Rey somehow beat Mysterio (maybe with HBK's help). They are talking about Punk vs Rey at Mania, mask vs hair. I don't know if a World title is needed for that match but it would be preferable to me than Drew. Basically I think WWE is being stubborn about the cries for new stars. So they are brining up nobodies, lets face it Sheamus and Drew are nobodies they have never done anything special anywhere else. And bringing up nobodies can work (Goldberg and Brock Lesnar come to mind) but it's not working for me with Sheamus. |

Basically what I am saying is if you wanna make new stars, why not go with the guys who have been working for 10 years and never got the big push, Shelton Benjamin, Miz.

After the string of recent Wrestlemania opponents, there is no way that they should put Taker's streak up against a guy who came into the company less than a year ago. You can't compare a one year push to a match with any of today's main eventers from a draw stand point. I would expect him to have a pretty solid outing in the Rumble, though.

Drew McIntyre has been wrestling for 9+ years now. I know you mean in the WWE, but McIntyre is far from a complete rookie with no passion for the business. Just saying.

I cant see this workin and here why, First of all, McIntyre is cool and all but he got mad flaws. Okay so he aint a rookie but he a rookie to the "Big Show" (and I dont mean Paul). Point is, he just came in recently and he isnt exactly someone the fans look and say, "Yo that guy has a chance". Him winning will piss off the fans because, not because he is a heel, but because just come on, he is a "rookie" in the WWE universe so to speak and I mean, a rookie winning the rumble works, but it only works if that rookie is special. Like, Lesnar, cause he was huge or John Cena cause the fans went wild for him especially when he was gangsta. But Drew McIntyre? The guy only like 2 ppl in the crowd usually care about? Second, Drew dont have the look. Sure he is build and all, but he just dont have "it". The long hair really screws him up the way I see it cause it make him look like some reject from the 1980's and it makes him look strange, like, it detracts from him. I think if he got a good haircut or maybe even shaved bald, that would be a good look for him and can make him more of success, but right now, if u got a guy, who like 2 ppl care about in the crowd (I dont mean here, I mean in a regular WWE arena), who looks like he just step out of a 1980's rock video win the rumble while looking like nothing special? It will just go flat on the crowd, they will just sit and there like "WTF", instead of cheering or booing (which is what I assume you want). So, if you want to make McIntyre a star, forcing him to win the rumble is NOT the way to do it. Here's how. 1) Built him up. Have him slowly become more and more dominate and beat up tougher guys than R-Truth or John Morison. 2) Make him change his look. Right now he look ridiculous, like I said, do something about that hair, it just makes him scream "I AM JOBBER" and thats NOT what you want in a rotal rumble winner. 3) Give him some confronations with big time stars. For example, if Bret Hart come back, have McIntyre walk out and say, "You know Bret, Vince was 100% right to screw you because you are garbage!" and have McIntyre beat some guy Bret chooses to represent himself, or if possible, have him beat up Bret. Point is, before you make him win, make him worthy. Right now him winning would be a WASTE. |

Not anymore, it has been a while when guys starting cutting hair and realized that long hair on guys was well, not very good looking (lol), only a few guys can look ok with long hair, for example edge because his gimmick is kind of that he a rock start, but Drew is not a rock star, he is suppose to be this monster brawler from scotland and he is sporting hair like goldylocks? Bad fit for the character imo.

I just want to note that I like McIntyre's hair. it's different b/c now alot of guys don't sport the long hair. 5 or 6 years ago he would have been just another long haired guy

Like Test. He came in as a Motley Crue bodyguard so long hair made sense. But after awhile it really didn't because he wasn't associated with Crue anymore. So the haircut suited him.

Like Thedric said, the Undertaker's streak has become a draw of it's own in recent years and with each passing year they focus on making it a major part of the show, featuring talents who the crowd may actually be able to buy snapping it.
First they put him against Batista for the title, then Edge in a streak vs streak for the title, and then Shawn. Undertaker more than likely only has a few Wrestlemania's left in him, so I don't think you'll see him taking any steps backwards, or having any more Mark Henry or Nathan Jones-esque matches. You'll probably see him take on Shawn in a rematch this year, Cena in a big money match next year, and if he makes it any further than that he'll only be taking on the best the company has to offer. |

This is not going to happen, mainly because it would be terrible but also because the rumble isn't KOTR or Money in the bank. It's the established main eventers playground, and Mcintyre just isn't there
I just wanted to say that I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who hates his hair. It's just the way his fruity little pony tail gets so messed up by he end of the match. |

None that I can recall. I deny that the Royal Rumble victory HAS to be for established stars, Rey winning in 2006 was the proverbial contradiction. Also Stone Cold in 1997 was a brilliant stroke to get him in the main event spot, KOTR made his get noticed- Not yet main event persona.

I could see McIntyre winning MITB at WM but as far as him winning the rumble, maybe he could get a final 4 spot that would pop him into the SD Elimination Chamber match at best.

Drew is dealing with an injury and he probably can hold off surgery for a couple months. But I don't think he is ready to win the rumble yet. He reminds me of a young Triple H and everybody remembers how long it took him to get big superstar status. If with the support he is getting I think MITB at Wrestlemania may be more logical.
