Origins of "The Boo/Yay Exchange"
You all know what I mean, when the heel punches the face, the crowd boo's. And when the face retaliates, they cheer (or Yay). Then they go back and forth, boo, yay, boo, yay, boo, yay, boo, yay.... you get the picture. Where in the blue hell did that come from? It's been around for what seems like a couple of years (my guess is 3 or 4), but any idea when it first started becoming apparent on TV? Maybe even the specific match?

It's been around forever. It's just an extension of 'heel shows out, crowd boo, face shows out, crowd cheer.' The punching gimmick does seem to have 'gotten over' a bit more in recent years though.

I think its 'gotten over' in recent years mainly because of Cena/the way he's been booked.

HBK did it in a RAW match against Yokozuna early in his babyface run. They didn't do the punching spot, but rather, he pointed to Yoko, which drew boos. Then he pointed to himself, which drew cheers. Back and forth until Yoko charged him.
