After reading the article, all I have to say is:

It was what Robben's dad said, and not him.
He said that Robben would rather play in PSV's reserves, not United's.
Some of that could be misquoted.
We're fucking loaded
La la la la la la.

Robben claims that he snubbed Manchester United for Chelsea.

The PSV president has said Man U offered a certain amount months ago, then went back and offered half Chelsea offered more, and also had Peter Kenyon to do the dealing (who he's friends with) so it went through.

Sorry but if I was a United fan (and especially a United shareholder) I'd be asking why the hell Man United, the richest club in the world (well, actually I guess that's debateable with Abramovich now, but still) would do something like that? Unless they were trying to bully PSV into taking less money or something...

He also said there's no agreement in place for them to become a feeder club for Chelsea, but the Robben deal does carry an agreement that Alex will move to Chelsea in 2 years time.

Not a bad bit of business at all really

It's what United always do, they try and unsettle players so that the club have to sell the player to them, and they thought that by bidding high, and being able to speak to Robben, that they would then be able to bid low, once Robben has his heart set on them, hoping that Robben would get annoyed if PSV didn't sell him, and then get pissed off at PSV, which would force them to sell him.

By george I've cracked it.

Ken Bates has resigned. which pisses me off because he is the man. Kenyon is a United fan and Abramovich and his money can go fuck itself, he gets three clowns to go on the Chelsea board, none of who know a thing about football.

It happened to be down to Peter Kanyon's involvement at Man United. As much as I don't like him now, to be fair, he did change the ways at Old Trafford in terms of spending money. He agreed a deal in region of 15 million for Robben to sign for us in the summer of 2004 and when he left, the deal went the shit. The board, being the cheap fuckers they are, then tried to do a cheaper deal and it went pair shape.

It's also similar to why we didn't sign Ronaldinho. Kenyon had a deal agreed at £24 million and then the board told him to go back to PSG and say he could only spend £21 million. He refused so the deal died and he went to Barcelona.

I wish we had Robben though.

I would rather you had Robben.

And that we didn't get anyone in the summer, and that there was no Roman Abramovich, or Peter Kenyon. And that Batesy was still in charge.

Which the United board don't want to do at the moment

I think United are gonna have the problem where every player they are after, another team will want, and these teams are willing to pay big money for them. If United wanna get back on a par with Arsenal they are gonna have to buy 2 or 3 decent defenders, a replacement for Beckham, another top quality midfielder, and a world class forward, Saha's good, but they need a Trezeguet or a Shevchenko, particularly if they wanna win the Champions League again

What I really don't get is that United panicked when they knew Chelsea were hovering and seemingly paid over the odds for Ronaldo (eventually he'll probably prove worth it but at the time and even now £11m is a little steep)...what's the difference in this case?

You'd be dead if Bates was still in charge. Remember you were a week from administration. I can appreciate the fact you like Bates because he did save Chelsea but if it wasn't for Abramovich, he would have took them under too.

Got to say I'm shocked by Batesy leaving, I knew things were going against him at Chelsea, but for him to leave there must be some pretty shitty backroom politics going on.

Sadly, if (or maybe even when) this whole Abramovich thing blows over, he would have been able to pick up the reins again, but maybe not now

^^ Yep

You *do* have to pay for them, United aren't doing that right now. Their standing in the game is slipping somewhat or at least isn't as good/strong as they seem to think it is, they have to realise they can't get a player just because they're interested in them.

Last I heard Ken Bates was supposedly looking into buying into Sheffield Wednesday...I dunno how much I'd believe it, I guess he might want to get back into a position of power somewhere but then again he's a businessman, and this deal has made him an absolute fortune. I wouldn't blame him if he retired.

I think they need a right midfielder and a defender too. Kleberson has to go in the summer and I didn't see the point in Djemba-Djemba seeing how he rarely even gets on the bench.

I'm not shocked at all. In ICT, we're doing this project, I won't bore you with the details, but we started it two months ago. Mines on Chelsea, and I put Bates in the 'old boys' section, not the 'current' one, because it was clear he wasn't going to put up with all the bullshit.

I called it from the start, in the thread I made when Batesy sold the club. Abramovich said Batesy was still in charge, but as soon as it stopped suiting him, he sorted that out, it was inevitable that he'd force Batesy out. I said that all along.

And we could have got another buyer, or sold of dickheads like Hasselbaink. There were other solutions, and I would rather inistrators sorted us out, then Abramovich did. He is a dodgy cunt, he has three peope on the board who know fuck all about sport. He can suck my dick whilst I'm pissing, the stupid prick is going to ruin Chelsea when he pisses off within two years.

And then we'll be in more shit then before he first came to the club.

Well assuming Ferdinand comes back and Silvestre is healthy, I'd imagine it'd look something like this

Howard
G Neville
Ferdinand
Silvestre
?? (Left Back...can't honestly think of one off top of my head to buy but c'mon - Quinton Fortune???)
??(Right Midfield...Ronaldo?)
Keane/Butt
Scholes
Giggs
Saha
van Nistelrooy

That, in essence, is not a bad team at all.

I guess.

I dunno, from what I've seen from O'Shea recently (granted not a huge amount but still) he's either horribly out of form or one of those defenders who's better going forward than actually defending.

He had a stinker the other week but that's about the only bad performance I've seen him put out so I have to give the lad the benefit of the doubt. Wes Brown concerns me more right now but I know he needs match practise.

It's a decent enough first team, but not terribly creative.

We have no strength in depth anymore which is my main concern.

People need to stop bítching about United. You've more points now than at this stage last year. Its simple with the way Arsenal are playing they could throw Real into the premiership and they'd still storm it. They have the leauge and they've had it for about a month

I think the reason people are talking about United is because clearly they are not the team they were.

Today Man U were officially named the Richest club in the world, way ahead of the next richest (Juventus) and yet they are going backwards on the pitch. They are not getting the results like they do a couple of seasons ago. They are struggling at times, and they are getting poor results against sides they should be beating comfortably. Also, when did United ever have to rely heavily on one man in the last few years before Van Nistelrooy arrived? Then they played as a team, and everyone played for each other. If United didn't have Van Nistelrooy, who as much as I hated to admit it is one of the top strikers in terms of his positioning and eye for goal (in the box), they would be in trouble.

This is what the PSV president had to say about the Robben deal, lifted from football365.com

``I was very disappointed with Manchester United over the deal, whereas Chelsea were very different,'' van Raaij told The Sun.

``With their chief executive Peter Kenyon, a deal really is a deal. I have always been able to do good business with him.

``That was the case with Jaap Stam and Ruud van Nistelrooy's transfers [to United when Kenyon was chief executive there] and also recently with Robben when Manchester United wanted to sign him.

``Kenyon is trustworthy and a man of honour. He does not go back on his word but that is something United have now done.

``They obviously believe their name is enough to attract players and make them sign. After learning of our financial problems, they halved the offer. They did not keep to their original offer - they let us down.

``But Kenyon was honest throughout and I was very impressed.''

If that is true it's a pretty shady business method they've got going there...I guess I can see *why* they would but wouldn't it be obvious they'd just piss PSV off by doing that?

I still find it odd, they must've raised £60 million or thereabouts through selling players so i just don't understand how they're so close to crumbling. The Champs League/Uefa Cup bring alot of revenue but surely not enough to force debt if the club is without it.

There must be some sort of dodgy background goings-on i guess.:\

From an interview with Jaap Stam:

Are there lessons to be learned after what happened at Lazio? Even the president is in jail now...

"It is so simple to pour millions and millions into a club. As long as you have enough money, every player in Europe can be brought in, but look at us now. The lessons we have learnt are harsh and the reality of our situation is driven home every day."

Is there a danger that Chelsea could go the way of Lazio?

"I look at Chelsea and I know what they are doing. They keep buying all the big names. There will be some success. They will win something. Exactly the same thing happened at Lazio. But look where this club is now. Here, in Roma, they operated no different from the Chelsea owners. But right now we are in a major financial crisis.

"The biggest problem for a club like Chelsea is that, because of all the money spent on the transfer market, the expectations are incredibly big. And when the time comes when there is not enough money to pay everyone, people will still have huge expectations.

"Even at Lazio, with most of our big names gone again, nobody says: 'Listen, we have to cut back, we are facing a few tough seasons ahead'. The whole world is still expecting miracles."

Thats what I've been saying from day one, Harvey said about how without Abramovich we would be in administration, but after he has pissed off, we will be in more trouble then we're already in.

We'll have to sell everyone and it will fuck everything up, the only good that comes out of that is that all the fake fan will hopefully piss off and we will use our youth team how we should be now, and getting through quality players who care about the club.

And I never doubted that, I have never liked this whole Abramovich thing. It was destined for disaster from day one.

Smith appointed at Old Trafford
17:13 March, 3, 2004
Walter Smith has been named as Sir Alex Ferguson’s number two at Manchester United.

The former Glasgow Rangers and Everton manager has been out of the game since his sacking at Goodison Park, and his appointment at the champions comes as something of a surprise.

Sir Alex has been without a right-hand man since Carlos Queiroz quit to manage Real Madrid in the summer, and the Reds boss is delighted to offer Smith a the chance to succeed the Portuguese man.

“I am delighted that Walter has accepted the chance to join United,” said Ferguson. "There are few people in the game with his experience, knowledge and technical ability. His talent and background will be major assets at such a critical time of the season."

Smith has been handed the role until the end of the season, and follows previous number two’s at Old Trafford under the Ferguson regime such as Brian Kidd and Steve McClaren.

“The chance to come to Manchester United is something I couldn't turn down,” said Smith. “There are few bigger challenges in football than helping a successful side sustain their achievements. I have huge admiration for what Sir Alex has achieved at United and I'm excited to be part of it."
