Damn, was probably the best Impact since Slammiversary but NFL pre season probably played into that low rating.

The "ratings are low because people would rather be doing other things" argument never washes with me. People would rather be doing other things than watching dudes like Eddie Edwards and Sami Callihan fight in a bush to some shitty musical score.

No the rating is because of the channel they are on. Impact has been on the upswing this year and are slowly making progress. They're not on the level of NJPW or ROH but they are embracing being an alternative which is good.

They are on the channel they are on because they are TNA. They were on Spike TV. They got chased off. They were getting 1.1 million viewers. Then they were getting 300,000 viewers. Then they were getting 250,000 viewers. Now they are getting 150,000.

Would not be surprised if WWE buys up their tape library sometime soon so they can pad out the Network and do a "LolTNA" documentary and have guys like Styles and Joe bury it.

Would also finally make TNA's history canon in WWE land. Remember when Sting apparently faded from existence for 13 years after WCW folded? Not even Jeff Jarrett was allowed to talk about TNA in his HOF speech.

Could be of use to them to add titles to AJ and Joe's legacies once it comes time to fill out more HOF spots in a decade.

It'd actually be a useful archive to mine. It's like WCW for them, only less hurtful. They can do a Samoa Joe special, an AJ Styles one, a Sting one, a Kurt Angle one, a Bobby Lashley one. They can do a "What the fuck happened?" where they have the guys shoot on how incompetent it was. They can do a "What is its legacy?" and try and be optimistic about it. WWE have never really spoken about TNA, so it'd be interesting to hear them unload the gun. Getting Jim Ross to appear and take shots at the name of the promotion, for example. Hearing people go off on the email scandal and how hilarious it was they got kicked off Spike. It's actually a really amusing story. One of the best pops in recent memory was Angle telling Owens & Zayn that "TNA was hiring." There's something in it.

There's the PPV archive, which has some memorable stuff. They can do like a Mystery Science Theater 3000 type thing and have wrestlers do commentary over the shows. Just pay Jim Cornette and Bruce Prichard a bunch of money to sit in a studio on and do commentary over them. I'm not even being insincere with that idea.

Going through the roster, there is barely anyone worth taking. Again, I'm not being insincere. The talent that are good have either been in WWE before and were cut for reasons or are basically confirmed to be heading there. Maybe they give another look at Brian Cage or Evan Bourne. John Morrison is there, but he probably had an open door to go back anyway. I could see Sonjay Dutt going there, because they love snatching up Indian guys. Maybe Zema Ion for a Filipino team with TJP? The rest are either scrubs or have backgrounds involving domestic violence. So it's not like you even have the problem of where to put all the talent you'd be buying.

But yeah, it fills it the gaps and gives the WWE more footage. The good stuff can be presented as good, but the bad stuff can be presented as hilariously bad. Think The Rise and Fall of ECW, but with a satirical tone.

Sounds like SummerSlam 2019 is between Toronto (Rogers Center) and somewhere in the South or Texas. Stadiums/Domes -- not arenas -- for SummerSlam going forward. Hmmm....

Toronto would be a good place for it, given that they don't want to do Mania there because of the weather.

ROH has announced Los Ingobernables de Japon member EVIL for their post-Death Before Dishonor television tapings at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas on September 29. Like with KUSHIDA, he’s just announced for the tapings and not the PPV. The tapings are taking place one day before NJPW’s Fighting Spirit Unleashed show in Long Beach.

A rematch between Marty Scurll and Shane “Hurricane” Helms, Hangman Page vs. Kenny King, Women of Honor Champion Sumie Sakai vs. Tasha Steelz in a non-title proving ground match (Steelz gets a future title shot if she wins), Trent Barreta & Chuck Taylor vs. The Boys, and Vinny Marseglia & TK O’Ryan vs. Coast 2 Coast have been added to ROH’s TV tapings in Philadelphia on August 25.

Revolution Pro Wrestling announced Rocky Romero, Sho & Yoh vs. El Phantasmo & Aussie Open for their show at the Portsmouth Guildhall on September 7.

Johnny Impact (John Hennigan) issued a challenge to the Bullet Club for Chris Jericho’s Rock ‘N’ Wrestling cruise this October.

The full TripleMania card is scheduled to be announced on 8/21, or just four days before the show, at a press conference. That has to be a record. Right now it’s all about the four-way mask match with L.A. Park, Pentagon Jr., Psycho Clown and El Hijo del Fantasma as the only real strong draw

The previous largest gate for a non-WWE show in North America was $1 million, set on September 11, 2014, for the Atlantis vs. Ultimo Guerrero mask vs. mask mach at Arena Mexico. The largest ever in the United States was $930,735 set on January 4, 1999, for an episode of Nitro at the Georgia Dome. The Hulk Hogan vs. Bill Goldberg gate at the Georgia Dome months earlier was $906,330. It is possible this would be the second largest gate ever for a pro wrestling show in Madison Square Garden for wrestling, trailing WrestleMania 20 that did $2,401,000. It was the fastest sellout since WrestleMania 20 in Madison Square Garden, and second fastest of all-time. It sold out farther in advance than any pro wrestling event at the Garden. And it was the first Madison Square Garden sellout for pro wrestling since 2015.

The thing is with Fenix is that we’ve already seen with Gran Metalik what can happen with a super high flyer, although Fenix speaks good English and Penta is learning, and Penta cuts an awesome Spanish promo. Still, we’ve had people bring up Metalik and Super Crazy (who was a super worker when he went to WWE and did nothing there, although this is a very different generation when it comes to open mindedness regarding talent) and also noted that Penta’s physique and size aren’t the type that Vince McMahon would normally push

ITV’s goal for the time slot would be second place, but it was only in fifth place including losing to a soccer game on BT Sports that did 546,000 viewers. BT Sports is a sports subscription channel while ITV is the No. 2 broadcast network available in virtually all homes.

One major U.K. wrestling figure said that besides all the quick camera cuts, the problem is they’ve made no connection between the audience and the characters, which is one of the reasons for the declining numbers. Even in shows like Ninja Warriors on ITV, they give you vignettes to introduce everyone. An issue is that those involved with the show react to all the criticism with the idea it’s not designed for hardcore wrestling fans, but for the general public. The problem, and this goes for the U.S. and the U.K., is that there is a hardcore audience that is more into wrestling than ever before and more willing to pay for it, but as far as the casual audience goes, it’s never been smaller except during the low points in industry history

In actuality, WWE was wanting him to rest up and not risk a knee injury before he starts up and while we don’t know the start date, he is not doing any shows after 9/2. Because he’s been gone every weekend, the feeling was to limit his dates and he did a farewell to Northeast Wrestling at the Wappingers Falls, NY show, and with Japan and All In, it was an agreement with all parties involved to have him not work the date to allow him to rest up, since he doesn’t want to miss All In.

The Crash never got Rey back to drop their world heavyweight title to Bestia 666, which seemed to be a direction at one point. WWE wants to announce his signing on their own and throughout this I was told that if he signs, nobody can say anything until WWE makes the announcement. He has been very close to a deal for months and pretty much everyone considered it just working out final terms and that he’d be there very soon. He is still doing All In and the last date he has left on his schedule at this point is a 9/2 show in Chicago for Warrior Wrestling, so the teased New Japan stuff done over the past few months for matches with Marty Scurll, Kazuchika Okada, Jushin Liger and Will Ospreay isn’t happening unless something drastic changes

Whether they pull the trigger on it or not, who knows, since even though both are getting heavily praised, Marina Shafir has only had two matches so far and Jessamyn Duke hasn’t had anything but practice matches. Both are being brought to Takeover this weekend.

The feeling is Rousey is great on the big stage when the match is completely laid out, Shayna Baszler is clearly ready, Shafir had a successful debut built around using her judo which she does well, and Duke is getting real raves for her potential. A few different people told me that in the end, she’s going to end up as the best of the four. Having said that, since personality is so much a part of this, I don’t know how she’s going to be able to be her character like Baszler is, because Baszler does that better than almost anyone at the same stage, and Rousey is still learning but she’s got a superstar aura that nobody can teach and few can create. It’s also a potential match a few weeks earlier for Evolution, although the date we were told was Survivors at Staples Center

SPOILER: show
Voices of Wrestling recently reported Vince/WWE are currently leaning towards Brock Lesnar retaining the Universal Championship over Reigns at SummerSlam. Place I read the rumor from made no mention of Braun so its possible he won't be cashing in or also loses to Lesnar at SummerSlam.

Spoiler tags used since its related to possible Universal Championship plans at SummerSlam.

“I’ve got something for you,” he recalled when pitching the idea. “Boffo box office. I said what do you think about Intercontinental champion vs. Intercontinental champion: Jericho vs. Rollins?”

Jericho continued, saying that the match would wind up ending in a disqualification, with Rollins’ next challenger coming in and attacking. He also would have had time to come in and set up the angle on the Raw go-home show. He later went on to say that while it got a decent response, he never heard back from the company. Rollins is also no longer the Intercontinental champion, as he lost the title to Dolph Ziggler back on June 18.

Chris Jericho has been IWGP Intercontinental champion since June 9, when he defeated Tetsuya Naito at Dominion. He hasn’t appeared on New Japan programing since, though in his last appearance seemed to set up an angle between him and EVIL.

In one of the few interviews he has done since being reinstated by WWE, Hulk Hogan said that those who did not accept his return to the good graces of the company and reinstatement to the WWE Hall of Fame were not living up to the brotherhood that professional wrestlers share.

Appearing on the debut episode of the Apter Cast, the new podcast from longtime wrestling reporter/photographer Bill Apter, Hogan talked extensively about being blackballed by WWE in 2015 after audio leaked of racist comments he made on a sex tape. WWE management ultimately welcomed Hogan back to the company, and he addressed the entire main roster prior to the Extreme Rules pay-per-view in July where he issued a wholesale apology for his racial comments.

"A lot of people accepted my apology," Hogan said on the podcast. "And a lot of people heard what they wanted to hear and a lot of the narrative that came out of the meeting was on point. A lot of the narrative was really different. I was surprised to hear some people interpreted what I said that I was just sorry I got caught. I'm on camera, whatever they interpreted, but I never said that."

After Hogan met with current WWE talent, several African-American members of the roster made public remarks still questioning Hogan's comments and motivations. Titus O'Neil said Hogan lacked true remorse while the New Day -- Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods -- issued a collective statement on Kofi's Twitter account that they were "indifferent" to Hogan's reinstatement and found it difficult to forget.

"I just hope the brotherhood can get back to the way it was," Hogan added, drawing a parallel to how wrestlers protect one another from injury during a match. "Outside the ring, you're supposed to protect your brother. In this case, it's a situation where 75, 80, 90 percent of the wrestlers are protecting me and they're giving me another chance to move forward. There's just a few wrestlers that don't understand the bond and the brotherhood of wrestling. If someone makes a mistake, you need to forgive them and move on and try to let them prove themselves.”

Hogan added that, at the meeting at Extreme Rules, he asked if anyone had any questions for him. The only person to stand and ask a question was Mark Henry.

"I just wanted to be able to, if anybody had any questions or anybody had anything to say at that time, I really just wanted them to say it to my face so I could address it," Hogan said. "Hopefully understand the issue and get them to understand me."

Are you from Tennessee?

I am originally from Knoxville which would be a great host city. Neyland Stadium seats over 100,000 and is beautiful. Thompson Bowling can seat over 20,000 for NXT, Raw and Smackdown. Knox County Civic Coliseum (my first wrestling card) seats up to 6,000 and is a wonderful place to watch wrestling would be great for HOF or ROH/NJPW. GREAT food, and it would be huge for the economy there.

Nah, I'm not from Tennessee. I just think the aesthetic and the wrestling history would add a cool vibe to the show. They probably won't do anything with the history themselves.

I would be so fucking stoked if Bryan and Ziggler left the WWE and signed Sinclair/New Japan contracts. Between the two entities, there's no reason they can't give these guys options comparable to WWE. And there's also the artistic catharsis.

Prior to the loss to Atlantis, he had retained his mask in at least 58 consecutive matches, which has to be among the most wins of that type in Lucha Libre history.

It was a strong night overall for cable TV viewership as, despite the big jump from last week, the show failed to crack the top 10 in overall viewership, finishing at number 11. SmackDown did top the 18-49 demo, as it usually does, with a 0.77 rating. Miz and Mrs., which follows SmackDown on the USA Network, did 1.235 million viewers overall and posted a 0.50 rating in the 18-49 demo, tied for third place.

SmackDown was down nine percent from last year's post-SummerSlam episode, the 10th straight week the show has had a year-over-year decline.

While everything is still up in the air, the odds of MLW running another Walemania event over Wrestlemania weekend (which was the plan for next year in New York City) are not looking good at the moment.

That was 10 AM in the morning. The call was only allowed to last 15 minutes and they were cut off.

Several hours later, Lawler's fiancee received a call around 2 PM advising them that Brian had gotten into a fight with another inmate and had been "acting a fool" but everything was fine and he had been stitched up due to a cut over his eye. They later learned from witnesses that that account they were told wasn't what really happened.

Later that evening, Lawler was called by a Deputy Sheriff and told, "Mister Lawler, I'm sorry, but your son Brian has hung himself in the jail." Lawler said that based on everyone they've heard from and spoken to, none of it adds up and they still haven't received any answers and "it just doesn't jibe."

In regard to a rumor that has been making the rounds, there was no version of this week's Raw script that featured any appearances by Brock Lesnar. He was never, actually scheduled for Raw (despite the fact that the company advertised him all the way to the night before the show) and flew home Sunday right after the PPV on a private plane.

One story that has floated online is that the Triple H promo on Raw replaced a Paul Heyman/Brock Lesnar promo, but based on WWE Creative sources, that was never the case. As one source told us, if they needed a Brock-related promo inside the ring, they could have simply had Paul Heyman (who was indeed at Raw) cut the promo in front of the live crowd. Instead, they taped the Heyman-Kurt Angle vignette.

The only major change to the Raw script that we have heard of was Dolph Ziggler wrestling Dean Ambrose when the original idea was for Drew McIntyre to face Ambrose. Beyond that, the script remained the same most of the day and the HHH promo was always in there, designed to be a "local promo" to push the Super Show-Down Australia event.

While not yet announced, with the 5 p.m. Pacific (8 p.m. Eastern) start time, the NJPW Long Beach show, like the previous New Japan shows in California, will air live on AXS. We’ve been told that is scheduled right now but no official announcement has been made.

Week four of World of Sport on ITV did 545,000 viewers, which was up from last week, but still bad. It had a new lead-in as instead of the game show “The Chase,” they put in the movie “Scorpion King” starring Dwayne Johnson. ITV rarely runs Saturday afternoon movies but it appears they were using a Johnson movie to help the lead-in. Scorpion King from 3:15 to 5 p.m. did 609,000 viewers.

On his podcast this week, Jim Ross said that he thinks Josh Barnett will be unavailable for NJPW’s Fighting Spirit Unleashed show in Long Beach, California on September 30. Ross said one of Barnett’s fighters has a fight in Japan against Bob Sapp for Rizin and he’s not sure if Barnett will be back in time to call the show with him on AXS. Ross said it’s still being worked on, but they have a pretty good plan in place.

Michael Elgin, The Briscoes, Flip Gordon, David Finlay, Dark Magic, Okumura, and El Mesias will be the international team for CMLL’s Gran Prix on October 5.

PROGRESS announced that Jimmy Havoc and Will Ospreay will face off in a two-out-of-three falls, no DQ match at their show at the Electric Ballroom in Camden on Monday. Paul Robinson will be the referee. If Havoc wins, he advances to the main event of PROGRESS’ show at SSE Wembley on September 30. But two different promoters in recent weeks when asking me about them said essentially that when it comes to going to WWE, that the American wrestlers are professional about it and work with them as best they can to make things right and tip them off, but that this is more mysterious. It is not clear they are going for sure, but once they became evasive on date and questions, the belief is it must be the case because if they were going to New Japan, and really New Japan is overloaded with talent at this point so that wouldn’t be likely, they’d have plenty of dates to work around the schedule. Impact and Lucha Underground don’t run full enough schedules to where they wouldn’t take any dates. Then they both worked in Mexico on 8/19 and we’re told Penta wasn’t outwardly showing signs of any back injury. Granted, things heal and all that. But the nature of missing the shows here combined with everything has people very skeptical right now. The question also regards Lucha Underground, as they would be under contract there until six months after the conclusion of the current television season

After a 30 minute discussion, Levesque offered a contract.

The date that had been agreed on originally, at least the Saudi Arabian government believed and we’ve also heard this date is 11/2, the Friday immediately after the Evolution PPV

I don’t think it’s time for Rousey to be a heel, and for a lot of reason, who knows when it will be the time. Plus if Rousey is going to work with Stephanie again, it’s hard to see where Heyman would fit in

What was expected to be the biggest match in Mexico of the year, a hair vs. mask match with Rush vs. L.A. Park, is not happening.

The story behind it is sketchy, because Park (Adolfo Tapia) came to Arena Mexico on 5/25, immediately started up a feud with Rush that had been hot in several independent matches around Mexico in recent years ...

Still, Park and Rush continually challenged each other to a hair vs. mask match whenever Park worked at Arena Mexico, which were five shows since late May, including a double count out in a heated singles match on 6/22.

The first sign was when Anniversary tickets went on sale a few weeks ago and they were less expensive than expected. The appearance is that CMLL is not interested in Rush losing his hair, which would be the way out of this match even if the whole thing started with Park being willing. Park has pushed that he is willing to lose the mask, but whether the payday wasn’t good enough, or more likely, his career being revitalized over the last three months at a level none expected made him feel, and correctly so, that the time wasn’t right.

Park is now in great demand all over Mexico, the hottest he has been in years and perhaps drawing the best he has in a long career. Park is scheduled to be one of the key players going forward with MLW, and he needs the mask to be at that level. There is also talk of interest from other U.S. promotions, notably Impact.

On the subject of Owens vs. Strowman, Austin claimed that the match was "a lot shorter than [he] anticipated" before explaining that he did not appreciate Owens getting squashed.

"I hope Kevin Owens can claw his way back to where he was. Hopefully, they're booking him to get back to where he was. I'm a big fan of both guys. I'm friends with both guys, but, man, with Braun, Braun is a big guy. And Kevin has been in the picture for a lot of titles, held a lot of titles, and I just thought, 'man, he didn't get s--t in, so, eh, I just wasn't a fan." Austin continued, "yeah, I just didn't think Kevin Owens needed to get steamrolled because he's a top guy. And, obviously, Braun Strowman is still green, but he's a top guy. They're grooming him for bigger and better things, but KO didn't need to get squashed in the process."
