Is the table being set again?

A week after the Lakers pulled a pair of contract offers to Lamar Odom off the table, the sides resumed talks Wednesday.

The discussions were labeled productive, but there was nothing to report "at the moment," according to a source familiar with negotiations who was not authorized to comment publicly.

It didn't look great last week for Odom's return to the Lakers after the franchise yanked its offers of three years and $30 million or four years and $36 million, with the fourth year only partially guaranteed.

But the sides began communicating in a more positive light Wednesday. Financial details were not immediately available, though the Lakers were not expected to have improved their initial offers. If anything, the offers might have dropped slightly.

Lakers, Odom Close to a Compromise
Sources from inside the Lakers' organization have informed me this afternoon that there was a telephone conversation between Lamar Odom's agent, Jeff Schwartz, and Laker's owner, Jerry Buss, this morning and that the two parties are close to a compromise.

Buss, who had originally offered a 3 year, $30 million guaranteed contract, has apparently amended his current offer to 3 years, $21 million, with a team option for a 4th year. Odom's agent is seeking for that 4th year to be guaranteed for a total deal of 4 years, $28 million. Odom would rather stay in Los Angeles, according to sources, but the separation between the Lakers' 3-year offer and the Miami Heat's proposed 5-year MLE offer may be enough to prompt Odom to leave.

Buss is reportedly willing to add that 4th guaranteed year that will allow Lamar to accept the Lakers' offer, and this decision will most likely come in the next few days. Stay tuned.

Odom to Miami? Don’t bet on it
The talk (at this moment) is Lamar Odom is “leading strongly toward accepting” a 5-year, $34 million deal from Miami. From conversations I’ve had, I’m convinced that those reports are nothing more than agent posturing.

Even the fact Pat Riley flew to Los Angeles this weekend still doesn’t change the fact Odom wants to remain with the Lakers. (The Heat president owns a house in L.A.)

Ramona Shelburne of the L.A. Daily News said that “theories and facts change from day to day.” But the belief among those who know say Odom will remain in Los Angeles and will make it official soon.

Based on how the Magic are coached and their play style, I doubt them deciding between Okafor or Howard would have really mattered. Both are good big men but the team doesn't use them like how teams use a Shaq or an Ewing. During the NBA Finals, the Magic literally went through stretches without attempting to use Post plays while Lakers used them at correct times.

ESPN:

Lamar Odom will return to the Los Angeles Lakers, according to an NBA source.

Odom will sign a four-year contract, with the fourth year at the Lakers' option.

One source with knowledge of the talks told ESPN.com the four-year deal is worth $33 million if the Lakers exercise the final year of the contract.

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak declined comment. Odom's agent, Jeff Schwartz, did not return a message immediately.

Odom's options, as of Monday, were choosing between an offer from the Lakers or taking one of the multiple proposals from the Miami Heat.

Miami had offered Odom as much as it can for a team well over the salary cap: $34 million over five years with an opt-out to return to free agency after the fourth season, according to sources.

Odom, who turns 30 in November, has made it clear over the past several months that he has no desire to leave the Lakers.
