I don't know why you are being defensive. You said Zito would be stupid for going to a team with great young power hitting, but that lacks pitching, and is in one of the most open divisions in baseball. The A's are out without Thomas, the Angels are a mess, and the Mariners are still bad. With a few good moves, the Rangers could easily be in the playoffs this year if they signed Zito.

I'm just saying the Rangers are going nowhere. Zito would be like the only guy on the Rangers with anything of value. Nice to see you've listed the pitching of the Rangers.

That is why the Ranger's need Zito, all they have right now is Millwood and a decent closer in Otsuka. I'm just saying that it's not an incredibly stupid idea for a great pitcher to go to a great offensive team with no pitching in a wide open division.

The Rangers are pretty mediocre. They're heralded as an offensive juggernaut, but their offense isn't really that great. Michael Young and Mark Teixiera are the whole team. Blalock can only hit at Ameriquest, along with the rest of the team. They lost Barajas. Ian Kinsler shows promise at 2B. Their outfield is TERRIBLE. They need an outfield bat.

If they sign Zito their pitching COULD be somewhat decent, but that's only if they can re-sign Vicente Padilla (probably not going to happen). Zito, Millwood and Padilla is a pretty good top of the rotation, with Koronka and someone else at the back end. This is not going to happen though. Their bullpen leaves much to be desired as well.

Some Bay Area News:

The Giants and Bengie Molina have agreed to terms on a three-year deal, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Rich Aurilia is guaranteed $8 million under the terms of his two-year deal with the Giants.

Giants re-signed third baseman Pedro Feliz to a one-year, $5.1 million contract.


SI.com's Jon Heyman says that Oakland appears to be a strong favorite to land free agent Mike Piazza.

The Molina deal is pretty terrible already, and I don't even know how much he's getting paid.

Piazza would be a great signing for the A's as a DH. I don't think he's capable of Frank Thomas-like numbers, but he should be pretty good.

Cardinals agreed to terms with RHP Chris Carpenter on a five-year, $65 million contract with a club option for 2012.

Vicente Padilla's agent, Paul Kinzer, said Monday afternoon that the right-hander is close to reaching an agreement to return to the Rangers in a multiyear deal.

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal believes the Rangers could offer Barry Zito a six-year, $102 million contract.


The Red Sox, on the lookout for a closer, have reportedly inquired about Derrick Turnbow.

He's actually put up pretty good numbers these past 2 seasons.

.300/23/70/.349/.518 in 440 AB.

If the Rangers can sign Padilla and Zito, then I was wrong-ish. I did not think Padilla was going to sign with Texas and it therefore made no sense for Zito to sign there. If they can sign them both, kudos to them.

This could seriously turn out to be the worst offseason in Red Sox history.

Defense was one of their strong points last year, and they let Alex Gonzalaz, one of the best defensive shortstops in baseball, walk. Gotta love that middle infield, Alex Cora and Dustin Pedoria. You basically need to sign Julio Lugo at this point, and he'll be drastically overpaid. He's a huge defensive downgrade too.

Trot Nixon is gone basically, not that he was an amazing player but he was a team guy and he was a real Red Sock. They haven't addressed their closer need and there's basically no one decent on the market. They want to fill the void with Derrick Turnbow, who couldn't post an ERA under 5 in the National League. Genius.

They're probably going to trade one of the best right handed hitters of all time, replacing him with a guy who has never played more than 140 games in a season for a shitload more money then they could have offered the dependable clubhouse leader Johnny Damon a year earlier. They're trading him because they have enough offense, supposedly. Who do they have besides Ortiz now? Willy Mo Pena? Mike Lowell? JD Drew is a non factor because he'll play about 37 games, and even if he was healthy there's no way he he is a substitute for Manny Ramirez.

The pitching staff is a mess, Matsuzaka MUST be signed, and even then he comes with question marks. Schilling is old and could break down at any minute. Beckett is the most inconsistent pitcher ever and pretty overrated. Who knows how Papelbon will do as a starter. Tim Wakefield is somewhat dependable, I guess.

The bullpen sucks too.

What a mess. Works for me though.
