Pettitte coming back. Pretty excited about this, not sure how much of a difference-maker he will be but it doesn't even matter, just to have him back will be crazy.

Food for thought on Andy Pettitte:

"In comparing the big three pitchers on the market (sorry, Matsuzaka fans), Pettitte's numbers over the last two years are superior to both Barry Zito and Jason Schmidt (who signed yesterday with the Dodgers, removing himself from the fray, but helping establish a market rate with his three-year, $47-million deal). Pettitte is 31-22, 3.28 over that stretch, with 349 Ks and 111 walks in 436 2/3 innings. Zito has 30 wins and has lost one more than Pettitte, with an ERA a half a run higher. He has more wear and tear (449 1/3 innings) and his command is nowhere near as dominant as Pettitte's (322 Ks/188 BB). Schmidt (Pettitte's junior by only seven months) is just 23-16, 3.95, and injuries have held him to 385 1/3 innings. He has 345 strikeouts, but has walked 165."

More news:

ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting that Andy Pettitte will return to the Yankees on a one-year, $16 million contract with a $16 million player option for 2008.

Royals signed RHP Octavio Dotel, who had been with the Yankees, to a one-year, $5 million contract.

Cardinals signed RHP Russ Springer, who had been with the Astros, to a one-year, $1.75 million contract.


Free agent Mark Mulder plans to visit Texas and meet with Rangers owner Tom Hicks on Tuesday.

The Braves are reportedly more willing to part with Kyle Davies and prospects for Rocco Baldelli than they would be Chuck James.


According to the Boston Globe's Gordon Edes, free agent Eric Gagne has an offer that will guarantee him $6 million with a chance to earn an additional $5 million in incentives.

Boston didn't make the offer, which apparently means it's either from the Rangers or the Indians. Edes doesn't believe Gagne will be joining the Red Sox.

Mike MacDougal's new three-year deal with the White Sox is worth $6.45 million.

The Houston Chronicle's Richard Justice believes that, with Andy Pettitte gone from Houston, the Red Sox may now be the favorites to land Roger Clemens, should the 44-year-old return for another season.

The Blue Jays will consider trading Vernon Wells if they can't lock him up to a contract extension sometime around Jan. 1.

According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the Yankees are willing to give Shea Hillenbrand a one-year, $5 million contract. He's still holding out for a multiyear deal, though.

Not saying it can't happen, but there is no reason why Clemens would go back to the Red Sox. He retired a Yankee, and is clearly pretty loyal to that organization. He only came back into the league because his hometown club gave him a special contract and his good friend Andy Pettite was there. So now that Pettite is on the Yankees, why would Clemens sign with the direct rivals of the Yankees and now Pettite?

Also, if he was going to sign with a team to just try to win another World Series, the Yankees look 10 times better on paper right now. Yeah, he started his career and was probably at his best when on the Red Sox, but that was a long time ago. I am sure his closest ties are with the Astros and the Yankees, and I don't see why it would make sense for him to go to Boston at this point.

Jason Marquis signed with the Cubs. So did Wade Miller. I think Wade Miller is the sleeper, wow. This guy was starting to put together a nice career before he got injured. I think the Cubs signed(or traded for him) last year, they re-signed him on the cheap.

Considering potentially making a trade, the Cardinals have asked to examine Carl Pavano's medical records.

The Rockies are another team that's expressed some interest in Pavano, who is owed $23 million over the next two seasons. With Andy Pettitte back and Kei Igawa still likely to sign, the Yankees are likely to be more open to dumping as much as Pavano's contract as they can, though they may prefer not to do it before spring training.
