I don't get why Boras is being a hard ass about Matsuzaka, he is going to lose himself, Matsuzaka and Matzsuzaka's current team a lot of moeny by waiting out til next year. If they don't sign him, I wonder what they are going to do with that 51 mil?

I don't get why more hasn't been mentioned about Lester coming back, only place I've even mentioned was on here. That could be really big for the Red Sox

I hope Matsuzaka signs despite what Boras says...since he has the right to do so.

Just wondering though...is the $51.1 million bid going straight to the Japanese team all in one shot? That'd be pretty crazy

I agree but I think it may be too early to tell when exactly he'll be throwing. He says he's going to spring training but I dunno if he'll actually start playing til around June or so.

I'd think it would be.

Hopefully Matsuzaka realizes how much money he'll be losing out on and he signs. I wouldn't want to risk it personally, he could hurt next season in Japan and never pitch again.

For some reason, I still think Boras will get a deal done for Matsuzaka. Hopefully he doesn't so the Yankees can make a run at him next year but I see it happening at the last minute. I wonder how high the bidding will get next year if he is posted again though? Imagine how he would feel if Boston bid the highest again lol

Kenny Lofton will get a one-year, $6 million contract from the Rangers, according to the Dallas Morning News.

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal says the Mariners are on the verge of signing free agent Miguel Batista to a three-year contract.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's David O'Brien says it appears the Braves will non-tender Marcus Giles if they can't trade him prior to Tuesday's deadline.

An American League scout told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the Rays would definitely give up Rocco Baldelli in exchange for Chuck James and Yunel Escobar.

Orioles signed outfielder Jay Payton, who had been with the Athletics, to a two-year, $9.5 million contract.

Tigers agreed to terms with third baseman Brandon Inge on a four-year, $24 million contract.

I can't disagree. But 15 million for a guy that's never thrown a pitch in the MLB? Geesh.

The RedSox basically have to get him signed by tommorow. Consider this. The dude's still in Japan, they'd need to get him to Boston for the signing and to pass the physical in 2 days. That's cutting it short, but possible. Any later than tommorow, and it becomes virtually impossible to have it happen before Thursday's dealine.

This is why I don't understand why Zito hasn't been signed yet. With the way the salary scale has been skewed, Zito should be a no brainer to get a 13,14,15 million per season 6 year deal.

They outbid other teams to have the rights to attempt to sign him to a deal.
If they can't, the RedSox loose none of that money and Matsuka won't be eligible to play in the MLB until the following year when the whole process would start over.

After all the hoopla surrounding the $51.1 million bid the Red Sox posted to talk to Daisuke Matsuzaka, it appears a contract may not materialize.

Negotiations between the team and the Japanese star pitcher have nearly broken down, the Boston Herald reported Sunday. A source familiar with the situation told the Herald late Saturday that unless "there is an abrupt change of course," the Red Sox will not strike a deal with Matsuzaka before the deadline midnight Thursday.

Attempts to reach Matsuzaka's agent, Scott Boras, were unsuccessful. The source blamed Boras for a lack of interest in the negotiations.

Matsuzaka signed with Boras in October and was posted for bidding in early November.

Matsuzaka was 17-5 with a 2.13 ERA and 200 strikeouts for his Japanese team, the Seibu Lions, this year. He throws in the high-90s, has good off-speed pitches and is known for his deceptive "gyroball," which has been likened to a screwball.

The Lions will not receive any of the $51.1 million if Matsuzaka does not sign. The initial offer made by the Red Sox was believed to be between $7-8 million a year for four-six years, but Boras was reportedly asking for nearly $15 million a year.

Though the Herald's source admitted that there is time for the outlook to change, as of Saturday night the team and Matsuzaka weren't close to finding a common ground.

So had the deal gone through would they have had to agree on a deal around or above 50 mil or is that just an arbitrary figure?

Red Sox apparently making a record offer to Matsuzaka


In a conference call Monday night, Red Sox GM Theo Epstein said the he's prepared to make a "record" offer to Daisuke Matsuzaka on Tuesday.

By record, it's taken to mean that it'll be the largest offer ever made to a player with no major league experience. Epstein and owner John Henry are among the members of the Red Sox to make the trip to Los Angeles in an attempt to get Matsuzaka signed before Thursday's deadline. "I think it's also fair to say we're on Scott Boras's doorstep because he hasn't negotiated with us so far," Henry said. "We're taking the fight directly to him to try to have a negotiation here"
