Heard the Red Sox are trying to put something in JD Drews contract to protect themselves from a long DL stint. Ivan Rodriguez has something like this, I bet they are going try to do something like if he is on the DL with a shoulder injury for more then 60 days then they can terminate the contract. I'm not gonna lie, I really don't know much about the guy, but if they are keeping Wily Mo, Manny and Coco is he really worth this much money even without the injury questions? How much is he really going to play?

I think I would have rather signed a veteran like Luis Gonzalez, Moises Alou or Kenny Lofton for a fraction of the price (and contract length) to platoon with Willy Mo, who could start against lefties or if the veteran goes down.

I could see if they traded Manny and wanted to get this guy, but from what I've been seeing Manny is stayin in Boston so I don't really get it. Why not use that money elsewhere? (like signing Nomar Garicaparra

JD Drew could be a 5 tool player but he's always hurt. If you guys sign him and he stays healthy he could be a great addition. He never stays healthy though. He's had one season with 500 AB in his career, for Atlanta. Hit .305/.436/.539 with 31 HR, 96 RBIs and 12 SBs. The talent is there, he just never makes it through an entire season.
Shit, the guy has only had 4 seasons with at least 400 at bats, in 9 seasons. |

Damn, everyone already hates him here in Boston. Plus a lot of people are pissed since they are letting Nixon walk (because injury history) for a guy with an injury history of his own. From what I've heard, Drew is better then Nixon but people in the Bean don't care...Nixon was a huge fan favorite here.

Nixon might have had injury problems, but he played hard. Drew does not. Drew has way more talent, but... Drew has in the past taken the day off because of a sore neck that he got from sleeping wrong. Come on man.

I have heard that Boston only signed Drew to appease Boras while still dealing for K-Dice, but they always felt Drew would fail the physical. Don't know if there's any truth to this at all, but it's an LOL conspiracy theory.

Yeah I don't think so, since it seems they are still going to sign Drew even though they already have Matsuzaka
Not sure if you followed the Red Sox very closely but Nixon often hurt himself doing things like swinging a bat, running to first etc. I always thought he was on steriods personally, and still do. A lot of poeple would be like "WHAT NO WAY MAN ITS TROT!!" but I don't know, I'm not as big as a Trot fan as a lot of other people in Boston. I don't get how you can be a major league player and absolutely have no chance of hitting a lefty, like he was an automatic out againest a lefty. To me that's kinda ridiculous. |

I really hope Drew fails and isn't signed, just because he opted out of a great contract with the Dodgers when he absolutely did not deserve better. Greedy ass hole.

I'm reading that Boras is saying that there is nothing wrong with Drew's shoulder. Also it doesn't appear the original deal had anything about milestones being reached for Drew to make less money than the 14M per year. That's foolish on the RedSox' part. All it states is that if Drew does meet certain targets, some of the contracts last season of 14M could be deffered. So he'd still get every penney, basically a garaunteed contract with possible defferement in the last season's earnings. Again, that's a foolish agreement by the RedSoxdifferedpennyguaranteeddeferment.

I read on Yahoo Sports this morning that Dontrelle Willis was arrested for DUI in Miami last night. Wonder if that will affect his standing on the team and what not.

Other news:
Juan Rivera sustained a broken left tibia while playing winter ball in Venezuela on Friday. Rivera's left leg has been placed in a cast and he will be flown to Miami, where he will be re-examined by a trauma specialist tomorrow. Depending on how severe the break is, he might not be ready for the beginning of the season. If he is ready, at least the Angels will finally have a good excuse for using him as a DH and Garret Anderson in the outfield. A severe break would increase the chances that the Angels sign Shea Hillenbrand and might cause them to give Aubrey Huff's agent a call. According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, Keith Foulke is leaning toward signing with Cleveland, though a deal likely will not be completed until after Christmas. Two sources familiar with the situation told the Dayton Daily News that Ken Griffey Jr. broke his left hand while playing with his kids. It's likely, though not certain, that Griffey will be ready for the beginning of the exhibition season. The Reds, however, will want to limit his spring training action either way. Free agent Shea Hillenbrand is frustrated with the Yankees, saying he was told multiple times they would make an offer though they've yet to do so. Hillenbrand told The Star-Ledger on Thursday he thought the Yankees were no longer looking to sign him because of his defense. A Yankees official denied that, but it might be more likely that Hillenbrand joins the Angels. |

Brandon McCarthy has been traded to the Rangers for 3 prospects
Pretty puzzling trade seeing as the entire reason Freddy Garcia was traded was to give B-Mac a rotation spot |

It's hard to say though, because a lot of times a young pitchers potential is clouded by hype. Like just because he is 23 and a pretty good pitcher doesn't mean that he is neccessarily going to be Buehrle-esque in the future. The Twins have had a lot of guys like that, Scott Baker being the best example. You hear the stories of how he shot through the minors and all that, then he gets to the majors with all these expectations, but then you quickly realize he isn't an ace. So if that is the case with the White Sox, they probably made a good move here.

MILWAUKEE -- Jeff Suppan, the MVP of the NL Championship Series for the St. Louis Cardinals this season, has signed a four-year free agent contract with the Milwaukee Brewers.
According to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the deal is worth $42 million. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2707975 |

Good fit for Suppan there. Make a lot of money and not need to worry about winning a WS in Milwaukee. When I heard the Brewers were after him last week, I figured he'd land there. Pressure is off playing there so he can do his thing and then retire. He'd only be 35 at the end of the deal, so maybe not retire - if his numbers are halfway decent after this contract, which they should be, barring injury.

When a guy with a career 4.60 ERA gets $42 million, it leaves me with no doubt that Zito's gonna get $95 million-$100 million

Come to think, there's absolutely no excuse for the Mets not to sign Zito. It would be ridiculous if we add no starter to the top of our rotation when close to $4 million tickets were sold last year, SNY took off, the naming rights to the new stadium were sold for $20 million a year, and when our tickets will go up by $12 this season.

Mets should get Zito. The way their rotation was hurt last season, they need someone reliable. Plus if some way some how Pedro can make a comeback, they would have a nice 1-2 punch towards the end of the season.
Something I've noticed that actually worries the Detroit Tiger fan in me. The Yankees have really beefed up their rotation again. |

Two years ago, I thought the Yankees had rebuilt their lineup and were ready to be dominant again. Didn't really think so last year, but right now they look like they could be just dominant. Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Rocket back in the Bronx, which wouldn't help matters.

Some big news right here.
Supposedly, the Arizona Diamondbacks pitched a trade to the Yankees. A package of players for Randy Johnson. Nothing set in stone yet, but New York is kicking it over. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2708203 |

The other possibility is the Jays sign Mark Mulder. I know it's in fashion to bash the guy, but he played the last season + injured. I don't know if he'll be ready for the beginning of next season, but if he gets healthy, he could be a steal. Same thing with Brian Lawrence. Like Mulder, this guy had a bad/injury filled season last year + When healthy, they've put up really solid numbers. Someone's going to be bold and take chances on them, sure would like to see the Jays be one of the brave.
