Obviously not, but I don't think it's any new trend for a lot of people to hate things based on popularity either

I think you will find I didn't rate it as soon as I saw it.

It isn't terrible, just not very good.

I had no interest in seeing it but was dragged by friends to see it. It was boring and predictable. It was the same old story done slightly different with, depending how you want to look at it, either a religious or environmental message. The only redeeming quality was the 3D aspect and that got old fast. So many of the scenes were done purely for the 3D experience and there was a lot of unnecessary reaching and moving forward. It was like James Cameron wanted to make a movie in 3D and really didn't care if it was good or not.

Not true. Dark Knight was insanely popular and most people love it. I honestly thought Avatar was kinda boring. The special effects were cool and all but that isn't enough to make me a good movie (see: 2012 or Day After Tomorrow)

okay, nevermind then.

Also the chick's crying in the end was mind numbingly annoying.

I'm not disagreeing with anyone, since I haven't seen this movie yet, but what's this "same old story" that everyone keeps mentioning?

Boy gets sent to another planet, bot meets girl, boy helps girl save her planet? The only other move this reminds me of is Dances with Wolves, kind of.

Were the trailers misleading? They really played up the battle scenes. How much of that is in the movie compared to the getting sent to another planet and learning about the other culture and falling in love with the blue Stands with a Fist?

There's a fair amount of action throughout, but the end battle scene is like the longest I have ever seen and pretty amazing.
All plot bitching aside, I don't really know how anyone wouldn't be impressed by it in the pantheon of battle scenes.

Yeah. Like, the movie's worth watching at least once for the plethora of special effects, the (currently) seamless method in which they blend live action and CGI, and the sheer epicness of some of the battle scenes. You can definitely tell that they spent some fucking money on this flick.

It's just that the plot is awful, and stripped of its heavy duty special effects the flick would probably have been absolutely worthless. It's... less of an experience and more of a spectacle. I came out of it feeling a bit tired, but little else--but it is definitely impressive from a technological point of view, if nothing else. We've come a long way in terms of special effects.
