Kanye on his upcoming collaboration with Jay-Z, "Watch the Throne": "It's going to be way more awesome than My Dark Twisted Fantasy," West says. "My growth in music production and mixing is retarded."

I honestly think that Kanye is going to be in the "cultural icon" talks with people like Ali, Lennon, Michael Jackson, Bono, etc. He is just too big, too talented, and too outspoken and controversial to not be. And i would vot "yay" to it

I think he deserves the spot, but unlike all of those artists there's a serious negative weight attached to his name. It's almost "taboo" to admit you like Kanye because he is such a jackass

Same with Pac, Ali, and many others. People are overly-sensitive to things because we always want a "clean, perfect, never any controversy" type of "hero".
He lost his mom, basically brought up a nobody stripper who probably never even owned Ray-Ban, and got played for another FEMALE, got shafted at award shows (even i'll admit that..because he is cocky, they didnt want to award him), etc. Of course he's done his share of stuff, but like i named the names earlier, these are cultural icons that CHANGED the way you look at whatever they were involved in. |

Still gotta listen to this besides that first single. I hope it's great.
I loved College Dropout, Late Registration and Graduation, but didn't really care much for 808s. What will I think of this? |

It's got elements of all of his albums with a few new touches, so I think you'll be pretty psyched on it minus a few songs.

Dunno what you are talking about here Triple A. One of the reasons I love this so much is because it doesn't sound like any rap album I have ever heard. Crazy interludes, interesting song structures, interesting sampling.
Totally "changes the rules" of hip hop. Lost in the World is experimental music by any definition |

It's pretty good. I guess I can see why people would call it a "game changer" or whatever. It's definitely different than anything else out there. I admire the production and the innovative style...
I can't say that I'm incredibly into it or anything yet though. Like I am listening to it, and I am enjoying it, and I can appreciate it for what it is as an artistic expression/experimentation, but it isn't grabbing me like a "classic" album should. Still think Das Racist has the best rap album out there this year though I know I'm in the vast minority now. |

Listened to it. I like a couple of the songs, but I don't really see it as a "game changer" like some of you said. It's still good, but I don't find it to be as memorable as it is made out to be.

It definitely grew on me a ton after a few listens, but then again I loved it when I first heard it so I dunno.
Lyrics are great, production is huge + over the top good, just a ton of emotion packed into every song. Each one could potentially be my favorite. Also have to consider where it fits in to his musical career (which has been insanely good up to this point) and where it fits into the progression of the genre as a whole. It makes his old stuff look completely anemic and makes the rest of hip hop seem totally lifeless. |

I definitely think the lyrics are great and the production is incredible, it just hasn't really resounded with me. And when I say I can appreciate it, I definitely am saying I appreciate where it fits in his career and alongside the rest of the genre. I can see its relative importance in said confines.
It's definitely one of those albums where you're looking at an artist who is at the top of their genre both commercially and from a creative standpoint, at their creative and/or experimental peak. I can see it being compared to Radiohead with Kid A, in that sense, at least for its innovative content and perceived quality. And you see how much Radiohead changed music with Kid A. No one can deny the influence Kanye has had on the rap game over the past decade, taking it out of the ghetto/gangsta rap and cookie-cutter bling bling era and into a more self-conscious, intelligent and... I almost want to say suburban party realm, at least in the mainstream. Underground rap/hip hop has always had experimental albums of this nature (not exactly like this, but you get my point), however not with the same grandiose production levels. He's not the first to do something like this. But he's been afforded the biggest stage to do so, and as an artist of his stature... this album will hold a great deal of significance. Probably one of those albums that is "rewarding" if you spend some time with it. Which I haven't really done much of yet. I can see the impact this is going to have, but I haven't gotten that into it to be honest. |

Also, listening to this on good speakers or headphones is really key. The production is so densely layered that a lot gets lost on regular speakers. The "OHHH OOOH OOOOHS" on Dark Fantasy sound great (you can hear Kid Cudi, Elton John, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, and Charlie Wilson all pretty distinctly) and the baseline on Runaway is way way better.

RZA, did you d/l that song I repped to you? It's what they sampled for one of those Das Racist songs you posted. Actually it's the ending song off an anime called Samurai Champloo, which has a shit load of hip hop culture influences and references.

I just listened to as much of this as I could on Youtube. There are a few tracks missing.
For some reason Hell Of A Life was my favorite at first listen, but I haven't seen that mentioned here. I need to listen to some more. It's good. I don't know if I like it as much as I liked his first few albums when I was way into his music, but maybe I've just changed a bit. Back then was when I thought he was a genius. |
