Umm, because the WWE is a business, and even years ago they were losing sponsor after sponsor because of the vulgar, violent, lewd program they were putting out that companies wanted nothing to do with? Because the WWE wanted to actually get companies to spend their marketing dollars on the WWE again? I seem to remember the WWE lamenting the loss of ad revenue and sponsors for quite a while. At one point, it seemed like another sponsor was dropping out every week or two.
No no, feel free. |

Tards: Clearly it's not happening.
At least not before Christmas. Come the 27th Dec Raw, though, Tarver the serial rapist angle begins including brutal and graphic scenes of man-on-man rape. You'll be begging for "PG" then. |

I don't care if they stay PG for the rest of our lives they've proven that they can write awesome stories if they try and since Triple H has an office now I have renewed hope for the writing.
Personally I think Vince is the real determent to his product he has proven time and time again that he is horribly out of touch. Though not as bad as the brain-trust in TNA who are partying like its 1997 |

WWE has very little control in the time of advertising that comes on the TV station. That is done by USA Networks and the WWE doesn't get a very large cut of it anymore. They wanted to get back on USA so they took a deal with less perks like that. So, WWE needed to gain more revenue outside of just television. So, they made an effort to court more investors in their product in both print, store fronts and in toys. WWE lost Pepsi during the Attitude era because of reports made by the ParentsTVCouncil. Now they have Mattel producing their toys and Pepsi Cola is funding their 7/11 store for two consecutive Summerslam Cup deal. The last time they had a cup deal Booker T was pissed off that RVD had a cup and then Goldust freaked Booker out by eating his wiener. The ratings they got made it possible for them to get a great deal on Spike TV with huge profits from the television ad revenue. WWE ratings lowered so they were not able to get that type of deal in 2005 with NBC Universal. |

The one thing I'm not seeing discussed as much in regards to the PG business is the MMA influence. As much as he has his head up his ass on a number of issues, Jim Cornette was definitely on the mark when he said that a lot of the PG business has to do with MMA; while I'm not saying that it's solely responsible, it's a fairly logical thing to conclude that the demographic that made the Attitude Era so popular was largely drawn in by the sight of guy really beating the hell out of each other. That was a draw that reached a high point in Steve Austin. Now that UFC et al are far more accessible than they were in that day, it makes some sense that someone who wants to watch that kind of physical action is going to be more likely to watch guys doing it for real than in a worked environment. It's risky to chase a demographic that may already be trending in a different direction. Much as they did in the 80s, WWE is banking on the family audience as one that they can bring in and hang on to in order to replace the audience they've lost in the past few years.

WWE went PG way before returning to USA. They were PG oriented on TNN, but didn't have Cena as a main product.
As a Poli Sci Major, I love those idiot trolls who say Linda McMahon didnt turn WWE because of her political ambitions. GET REAL TRAILER TRASH. It's obvious the McMahons have a dominant agenda acros s the board. - Vince unsuccessfully to launch XFL. - Linda unsuccessfully to Senate. - Shane focusing on becoming a main player in other dominant and important companies. - Steph & Triple H slowly taking the reigns. It's been in the works for a decade now. Cena will turn HEEL and he will have a mixed review like Triple H has managed. Kids might get their parents to purchase merchandise of Cena's, but if the adults are tired of seeing Cena and his predictible storylines, then they will stop purchasing PPVs. It appears as if WCW was focused on the children in the 90s and WWF was focused on Attitude Era loving teens and young adults. However, today, it appears TNA and WWE (ironically both companies with new names but same staffing) have switched audience bases. TNA appeals to teens and young adults (even bringing in middle aged adults due to the oldschool wrestlers) while WWE focuses on WWECares and other children type promotions for the children base. Oddly though, their pro youth push of advertising and promos was around Election Time to sell to the people that they are pro family. I expect that to change as Vince will want to make a statement and not be swayed to stay the PG course after Linda was rejected her seat. He will go back to what he knows, being controversial and edgy, not watered down and censored. |

lol, this thread is awful. WWE went PG to try and salvage the ratings they used to receive by switching demographics. They needed a fresh approach because, plain and simple, they weren't drawing the same numbers with the old approach any more. That is how I see it anyways.
Also, lol @ wishbone thinking Mysterio is the only person capable of approaching Cenas' popularity as a face. That is some of the most laughable bullshit I have ever heard. Mysterio is a top face, no doubt, but Orton can definitely draw better at this time. So could Edge, or Taker. Hell, a returning HHH as a face would completely and utterly obliterate the pops Mysterio would get. Mysterio has had a great career, but even you must realize that at some point, a character does begin to decline from the peak of their career, and Mysterio is on the back stretch of his career, IMO. |
