I dedicated a post to that very topic, my very first post on TPWW in fact. When you consider all of the other runners-up in the Rumble and their accomplishments, it does taint the event a bit.

Meh, Santino is fine where he is.

People get fed to him on Superstars, and he gets fed to people on Raw. All the while he stays incredibly over.

In a perfect world, though, he would still be part of a tag team with Vladimir Kozlov. I was down with the Santinozlov.

Santino is by far the most over under-carder on the roster right now. While I'd like to see him get a push I honestly don't see a reason for it. The guy is so far gone due to crappy booking that no one from a mark's prospective would be able to take him seriously. He's basically Hornswoggle, but with the ability to take harder bumps.

Secondly, and more importantly, no one gives a flying fuck about runner ups. Who here can actually name all the runner ups without looking it up. When have you ever seen a wrestler listing off his accomplishments in a promo, and saying he was a royal rumble runner up? It means jack all, ffs.

Finally, the royal rumble isn't some sacred event, which should be serious business at all times. It's still just pro wrestling for god's sake.

Aside from that, in the 23 Royal Rumbles before it, they had never pulled that particular trigger before. They had a number of guys do the "hide outside the ring" deal (Lawler and Nunzio spring to mind) and the idea was mentioned by a number of commentators over the years (I believe that Heenan suggested that Flair should hide under the ring, provoking Monsoon to accuse him of having done that in the past.)

When Del Rio's music was playing and Santino was crawling into the ring behind him, my blood froze for a second. The only thing on my mind at that point was "Oh my God, they finally did it." It was something over 20 years in the making and it was performed flawlessly. And the crowd ate it the fuck up. It had to be someone like Santino doing it; with Del Rio as the other guy, you had to have someone close enough to his level to make it looks like it might happen.

I guess it was the FAN IN ME. I enjoyed that Santino was the suprising runner up. I was laughing til the very end. If you want to talk about ridiculousness in RR history try Macho Man attempting to PIN Yokozuna in the Royal Rumble and getting thrown over the top rope.
