You know that $70/year you are talking about? Try playing 99% of your games online without paying that. The only exception I can remember was the cross-platform xbox live/games for windows games. I believe you could play a couple of those without a gold account at one point in time.

The point being that the fee is not game specific.

Yeah, I got one of those messenger packs (card plus chat pad, which I needed, plus 400 points or something and a wired headet I'll never use) for like 40 bucks. Since I needed to replace my chat pad, this worked out well for me.

I normally buy whenever there's a deal and I have less than a year. It's super easy to find them at a discount.

I usually get a discounted one from my brother's microsoft retail rewards, but the account needs to be re-verfied and it's a pain in the ass. Its like 50 percent off for Gold.
