Hangman Page was the babyface champion at the time of that promo. He wasn't stepping on any dicks. He was on the mic against CM Punk in a company that prides itself on being unscripted. Page went where he needed to for that segment.

The blame should go on Tony for booking the guy he set up as his champion against a face CM Punk. He's said plenty of times it was his plan to eventually get to Page as champion but he failed once he got there. Injuries might have played a part of it but not really turning Page or Punk for that feud hurt it.

Oh, I’m not letting Tony off as booker there. Page was horribly booked as champion AND challenger. I remember him being booked so poorly I pointed out how ridiculous it was they were heading towards him being champion, and #1-wwf-fan thought he had something to run with and was like “GOTCHA!” when Christian Cage got the All Out title shot. Welp…

That being said, the talent does need to take blame for not understanding how to hype something on their own, ESPECIALLY if it’s unscripted. And especially if they’re supposed to be the alleged World Champion of this outfit.

There is a better way to do it. Hype yourself. “I’ve been here from the start” is fine. Tie it into Punk’s early promo(s). “I’m the guy that’s put this place on the map and lured you back into wrestling.” Hype yourself. Hype the promotion. Hype your opponent. Especially because he’s beating you and taking the belt. So don’t try and frame it like you’re saving the company from an evil invader. And don’t try and insinuate that the top babyface is greedy and doesn’t have passion.

“I see you’re looking confident. I want to remind you that this belt means I’m the Best in the World, not you. Wipe that confidence off your face because you’re the challenger at Double or Nothing. I want to face the hungriest CM Punk I can get.”

That way, Page can take credit for being the one (as a babyface too) to slap Punk into gear and shake him into World Champion mode. Punk can run with that. “Maybe you would have beaten me if I didn’t take this as the most serious match of my life?” Page doesn’t look like an esoteric, sideways talking malcontent. He doesn’t take the top babyface of the company and put his reputation with the fans (as a babyface) through the mud when there has been nothing on television to suggest that is the direction they are heading. It is bad television when it comes out of nowhere and is founded on nothing. Especially as they are about to head into two consecutive PPVs in Chicago.

Page absolutely deserves an “um, wtf bro?” And look at how it has blown up the company. When they write “The Fall of All Elite,” this is going to get a chapter no matter which side of the fence you fall on right now. Even if you don’t like Punk and think that shoot promos no one gets are the way to go, this culture has caused AEW a lot of disruptions that are now an unavoidable part of its history.
