I believe it has something to do with rebelling against the norm. For example, a friend of mine who grew up in Columbus with OSU grads as parents is a Michigan fan because he wanted to go against what everyone else was doing.

Yeah I naturally root for most Detroit teams since they're the local choice and whatnot. Although I've grown a liking to Pittsburgh's teams. I love the Penguins, when I first got into hockey my friend was a huge Pens fan so naturally I kinda followed them more since they did so it helped me get into the game more. I get a lot of Detroit games on cable and all but if TSN is showing a Pens game I'll watch that forealz. I kinda like the Steelers too 'cause they're more of a traditional team, run the ball and play D, none of this fancy shmancy passing ish. Plus Bettis is the man.

I'm pretty sure that any "good" team gets fans from all over..

I hate "pick'em" fans like that.. I can see if you don't have a team in your area, but seeing a dude wearing a Rams jersey in Jackson, MS, where they hold the Saints training camp, is gay..
