Just for anyone thinking it's an April Fools - It's not. It's totally legit.

I can't believe Flair doesn't own his own name still. What a tool.

Rob's right. You're in wrestling for damn near 50 years and you still haven't taken the time or paid the money in order to go ahead and purchase the rights to your ring name? Seems pretty stupid/irresponsible/lazy/ridiculous to me.

He did. Well, technically, he lost half. If he goes by the name Flair, it'd fine. But if he uses "Ric," he's fucked.

And for those who still think this might be real, Crockett sold all of his rights library to Vince and the WWE a long time ago, so unless he could prove that the trademark "Ric Flair" was of some professional use to him, which it isn't, then he wouldn't even bother trying to lay claim to it.

Jim Crockett didn't sell all his trademarks to Vince McMahon at all. He sold his wrestling company to Ted Turner. Nothing else.

And Dave Meltzer, who is one of Flair best friends, reported it like 3 days before April 1st so it's not a joke.

Even if it IS true, Crockett has no reason to legally battle WWE for use of the name. Also, seeing as Ric Flair is his real name (even though "Flair" is spelled differently) then Flair has every right to use it. You can't trademark the spelling "Ric", that's ridiculous. That's akin to somebody copyrighting the name "Mick" and now Foley would have to be known as Michael Foley.

It's ridiculous, and no court would declare in favour of Crockett, who has no likely use for the name "Ric Flair".

Actually you can trademark a different spelling. If Flair's real name was actually "Ric", then they couldn't do anything. But since his real name is actually Richard, he can be sued and there can be legal action taken.

Also it depends on if someone trademarks the name AFTER someone has used it. So if Crockett trademarked it but Flair had used it before working for him Flair would probably actually get the rights. (I believe that's how it went in the Honkey Tonk Man's case.)

"Ric Flair" isn't his real name so he doesn't have every right to use it. You only have the legal right to use your real name i.e the exact spelling of your surname. Why do you think there is a reason a bunch of guys in TNA had to change their names and not be called "Bubbah Dudlee" or "Road Dawg" or some nonsense.

No court would declare in favour of Crockett? How do you know? A bunch of people though Vince McMahon wouldn't have to change his company's name but he did.

Rob's on the right track here. Ironically, the whole concept of TM protection is to prevent "Market confusion." Spelling Rolex "R-O-L-E-C-K-S" will cause market confusion, but isn't strictly illegal.

You could have a Ric Flair in one promotion, a Rick Flair in another, and a Rick Flare in a third. That's why we have The "Manbeast" Rhino and the "Manbreast" Rhyno. And why we have Taz, and Tazzzzzzzzzzzzzz. And why we have so many others.

HEll, they even changed the spelling of "DDP" to "DEEDEEPEE" in WWE.

You know, when I was younger, I always confused Leslie Neilsen with Ric Flair. Now that I've seen Leslie topless in his appearance on the new Scary Movie ads, the confusion is back.

Well, wasn't it spelled Ric Flair on the WrestleMania show earlier?
