I thought it was 9 wins in a season? I could be wrong about that but even so, that just gives them an automatic bid. They can still get into a BCS game as an at-large bid even without hitting that mark.

A look at ND's schedule
September 2 at Georgia Tech - They are ranked around 35th in most pre-season shits, it is the first game of the season tho so they could be better than expected but I'd assume an easy win for the Irish here. I'd wouldn't call this game a cupcake game. September 9 Penn State - Bringing in a new QB so I think ND should handle this game, if this game was happening towards the end of November I'd think it'd be a lot tougher. ND should definetly win this game. Same goes for this game tho, definetly wouldn't call it a cupcake. PSU has a lot of dudes coming back. September 16 Michigan - Don't really know where to go with this game, Michigan didn't play up to their potential at all last season but this year could be different, right now it looks like ND should handle this game but that could change. Definetly not a cupcake. September 23 at Michigan State - I'd say ND should win this one, I've seen Michigan State projected as low as 7th in the Big 10 but they are returning Drew Stanton as well as all of their LBs and CBs but ND should definetly win this one. Still wouldn't call this one a cupcake, atleast not yet lets see how Michigan State pans out this season though September 30 Purdue - I'd think ND should win this one as well, although I wouldn't be surprised to see Purdue finish up in the top 25 when all is said and done...no Ohio State for Purdue this year plus Wisconsin and PSU on their homefield. October 7 Stanford - Could probably call this one a cupcake, Stanford lost to a 1AA team last season, so yeah. October 21 UCLA - Wouldn't call this one a cupcake, although UCLA did get routed last season by Arizona so who knows. ND will undoutbly be the favorite here but UCLA is another team that could possibly be in the top 25 once this game rolls around. UCLA started out 8-0 last year, so this could be a match up of 2 undefeateds when its gametime. October 28 at Navy - Should definetly win this game, at this preseason ranking sheet I got infront of me Navy is at #42 - I dunno if I'd consider them a cupcake opponent since they've showed to be a strong team in the past. November 4 North Carolina - Ehhhh, easy win here, probably call it a cupcake November 11 at Air Force - Cupcake November 18 Army - Cupcake November 25 at USC - Could be a match up between 2 undefeateds to see who goes on to a BCS title game to face Ohio State. |

They did have that clause, not sure if they still do though.
ND plays teams that tend to be tough each year, with a few that are pushovers every year. But how is that different from any other team in the country? Every major program in the country schedules some pussy D-1A or D-1AA teams that they can beat the shit out of every single year. So I don't wanna hear an shit about ND having a cupcake schedule, they're no different than any other team in the country. |

lol Auburn played the biggest cupcake non-conference I've ever seen a few years ago. Then all the fans where upset when they didn't get into the National Championship game, they probably did deserve to be there cuz they went undefeated in the SEC but when you schedule the Citadel and like Midwest Southern Tennesse State it is kinda hard to complain.

SEC fans have also had an attitude tho "This league is so much tougher than all the others!" Not really, all the BCS conferences are pretty tough, some a little bit more than others. I wouldn't saying going undefeated in the SEC is anymore challenging then the Big 12 though.
Big East Champ did beat the SEC Champ last season as well. |

Yeah, everyone is always on the SEC's nuts about being such a tough conference. Its divided into East and West, and don't the teams only play within their half of the conference anyways?
I mean each half has a few teams that have been powerhouses in the past, but now a days not every one of those teams is always at the top of the nation in ranking, so its not like it matters. |

Lol @ Bomar, dumbass. Either Texas or OU was going to be top four at season's end. I don't forsee any Big 12 team that will beat either team, but Oklahoma and it's inability to close things out just took a big hit.
As for Notre Dame, they will not win the national championship. BCS bound I would think, but they will have to go undefeated (obviously), and if more than one other team goes undefeated, Notre Dame is going to have to win all of it's games with authority. Join a goddamn conference. Also, what happened to ESPN ranking West Virginia No. 1 in the winter. That was stupid. I think the top four teams, in no order, will be Texas, Ohio State, a mid-ranked team that will be better than expected, I'll say Georgia, and then a really random team, like Oregon. I don't think USC can remain top five, even if they do have good recruits coming in or what not, they just lost two of the best college players of all time. |

I think you are taking for granted that fact that even ONE team will go undefeated this year. It is never set in stone, especially in NCAA, that a team will go undefeated and win the title.

But I am saying that Notre Dame, should they even lose one game, will probably be out of it a lot faster than a team from say the SEC or Big 12 that loses a game. That might not be fair, but I think that is the perception of Notre Dame. Because they don't play in a conference and their schedule always turns out to be weaker than it was preseason, one loss to any of those teams would kill Notre Dame long before Texas is killed by losing to Oklahoma or Auburn is killed by losing to Alabama.

How many SEC teams are in the top 10 this year? Top 25? I wouldn't say we are the dominant overpowering conference that we once were with Alabama being loaded down with sanctions, injuries, and everything else and Tennessee having a down year last year, but I think we are still the strongest conference. Most teams have a few teams on their conference schedule who are no-doubt wins. They probably don't look at it that way obviously, but everyone knows it. We don't have that. Even with teams like Ole Miss, Vandy, and Miss. State looking like "cupcakes", they are upcoming teams I think. They always have good athletes and give good games. I think Ole Miss is going to have a pretty good year. Weakest teams I see in the conference is probably Vandy and State probably. Florida, LSU, Auburn, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina - six good solid teams in one conference. Not many conferences like that. Maybe I am biased though. |

The SEC probably does the same thing the Big 12 does. There are two divisions of six, and each year you play your other five division opponents and three from the other division. Then the other division teams switch up every two years.
As for the SEC being the toughest conference, there is no doubt that it is. In the East, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee are three of the nations premier programs. At any given year, at least one of those teams should be in the top 10, and when the others aren't, they are rarely bad. South Carolina won seven games last year and bring back Sidney Rice and a second year under Spurrier. They could be the next big team (although Brad Smith owns them). Kentucky isn't good, but they have had a few decent seasons, and Vanderbilt is probably the worst team in the conference. The West is equally as scary. LSU, Auburn and Alabama are arguably bigger national powers than the ones in the East. Arkansas is always a solid program, held back by the other powers. Ole Miss had one of the nations top recruiting classes, which most of should be redshirt freshman next year, and I don't know much about Mississippi State. Think about the other BCS conferences. --------------------------------------------- Big Ten: National Powers: Ohio State Michigan Solid, usually ranked programs: Wisconsin Iowa Purdue Penn State Average Programs: Michigan State Minnesota Generally, ass: Northwestern Indiana Illinois --------------------------------------------- Big 12: National Powers: Texas Oklahoma Nebraska (to an extent) Solid programs, usually ranked: Texas A&M Texas Tech Colorado (for some time) Average Programs: Missouri Iowa State Oklahoma State Kansas State Generally, ass: Kansas Baylor --------------------------------------------- Atlantic Coast Conference National Powers: Florida State Miami (FL) Virginia Tech Solid Programs, usually ranked: Virginia Clemson Boston College Average programs: Maryland North Carolina State Georgia Tech North Carolina Generally, ass: Wake Forest Duke (I would say the difference between the solid and average programs in this conference is pretty small, you could almost combine them and meet in the middle) --------------------------------------------- Big East National Powers: None Solid programs, usually ranked: West Virginia Louisville Pittsburgh Average programs: South Florida Connecticut Syracuse Road Doggy Dog, awful: Cincinnati Rutgers (To be honest, I don't know how good those two teams are, but I am pretty sure they are the worst programs in easily the worst BCS conference. Also, the Miz isn't that bad) --------------------------------------------- Pacific 10 National Powers: USC Solid programs, usually ranked: Oregon Cal Arizona State UCLA Average Programs: Stanford Oregon State Washington Generally, ass: Arizona Washington State --------------------------------------------- Southeastern Conference National Powers: LSU Georgia Auburn Florida Tennessee Alabama (to a certain extent) Solid programs, usually ranked: South Carolina Ole Miss (to an extent, though not lately) Average programs: Kentucky Arkansas Mississippi State (I think?) The Outlaw could play for 'em: Vanderbilt --------------------------------------------- So this isn't misinterpreted, the "National Powers" isn't a list of teams that are contending for the national championship year in and year out. It is a list of teams that have very strong programs, always have great recruiting, and are bound to challenge for a national title at some point within about a 10 year period. By challenge for, I don't mean they will be in the game, but at least ranked top 10 or higher at some point. Also, this isn't a list based on what is going to happen this year. Tennessee was 5-6 last year, and might not be better than 7-6 this year, but within the next five years, if Tennessee doesn't crawl it's way back to the top 10 at some point, I would be shocked. Same goes for Ole Miss, who I could have placed worse because of recent years, but as a whole, that is a solid program that is held down by the powerful teams on top. They look to have a very prosperous next couple of years. The only team that I left out of the national powers that very well could have been there is Penn State, in my opinion, but the last couple of years really took them down. The other thing about "National Powers", I listed 15. Of those 15, probably one or two will miss out on a bowl, maybe nine or ten more won't be ranked, and maybe five will be in the top 10, but besides a few random poor seasons, these teams are always good. How good, it just varies on the year. And that is why the SEC is so hard. |

Yeah exactly. Vanderbilt is a joke though. They don't even have an Athletic Director. Pretty sad. They are all about the academics though, it's really tough to get into Vandy. Seems like they always have good athletes but they can never get over the hump. Especially lately.

I don't follow Pac-10 football enough to know for sure, but USC is going to be ranked, maybe top 10, I would expect UCLA, Cal, Arizona State and Oregon to all be competing for Bowl bids, and one would think that Washington is better than they were last year, so I would expect Arizona to be in the bottom third of the conference, probably pretty low.

PS Kentucky has had 2 winning seasons since 1990 and they were both 7-5 years. Kentucky has won more than 7 games a grand total of ONE TIME since 1978.

In fact, looking back at their history, they've won more than 7 games in a season a whole 10 times. UK has had a team since 1881. They are pathetic in every sense of the word.

Mike Bell, undrafted rookie running back out of the UofA, just got promoted to starter for the Broncos
So atleast they got that goin for them.............which is nice. Gotta watch out for Florida if not this year than in the future, I was down in FL this weekend so I got to check out the local sport pages and they had a story about how 3 or maybe even 4 true freshman wideouts could be getting some serious playing time. Pretty sure most people already know about Tebow so their offense could be pretty ridiculous. |

Also, I don't really agree with your "National Powers" thing, if you are going to list Alabama and Tennesse as national powers I'd think Penn State would be one. Last edited by Jesus Shuttlesworth; 08-08-2006 at 01:52 PM. |
