I'm going to have to go with the heel version of "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig (1989-1991)...
...but I also wanna choose Monsoon and Heenan on commentary. Can I do that? I just did. |

Yes, Ric Flair is actually a 19-time World Champion:
9-time NWA World Champion 8-time WCW World Champion 2-time WWF World Champion |

Hmm, couple of those are technicalities though, aren't they?
So they call him 16 time champion, why? To make it easier for Trips to catch up? |

Yeah but it could be forever, from this point forward.
Keep the past as it was, just change the here and now. |

The International championship doesn't really count though. Still, I can't see any reason for WWE to DOWNPLAY his success, unless - as I say - they simply want to make it easier to beat his record.

For the record, I give you...
All of Ric Flair's World Title Reigns... #1: September 17th, 1981 - Ric Flair defeats Dusty Rhodes to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship for the first time. *During this reign Ric Flair dropped the belt to Jack Veneno, Victor Jovica, Carlos Calon and Dusty Rhodes wearing a mask calling himself Midnight Rider, for various different reasons, not a single one of the title changes were counted as official or ever truly recognized by the NWA, despite in most cases him winning the title back on a different night. (P.M. if you want more details on way for each of the 4 different accounts)... ~Flair droped the belt to Harley Race on June 10th, 1983. #2: November 24th, 1983 - Ric Flair defeats Harley Race to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship for the second time. ~Flair droped the belt to Harley Race on March 21, 1984 #3: March 23rd, 1984 - Ric Flair deeats Harley Race to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship for the third time. ~Flair droped the belt to Kerry Von Erich on May 6, 1984 #4: May 24th, 1984 - Ric Flair defeats Kerry Von Erich to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship for the fourth time. ~Flair droped the belt to Dusty Rhodes on July 25, 1986. #5: August 7th, 1986 - Ric Flair defeats Dusty Rhodes to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship for the fifth time. ~Flair droped the belt to Ronnie Garvin on September 25, 1987. #6: November 26th, 1987 - Ric Flair defeats Ronnie Garvin to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship for the sixth time. ~Flair droped the belt to Ricky Steamboat on February 20, 1989. #7: May 7th, 1989 - Ric Flair defeated Ricky Steamboat to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship for the seventh time. ~Flair droped the belt to Sting on July 7, 1990. #8: January 11th, 1991 - Ric Flair defeated Sting to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship for the eighth time. ~Flair droped the belt to Tatsumi Fujinami on March 21, 1991. #9: January 11th, 1991 - Ric Flair defeated Sting to become the WCW World Heavyweight Champion for the first time. *Please note, this is the exact same match he won the NWA World Title from Sting in, however he began being recognised on WCW television as the first WCW Champion, but the NWA World Champion any time he would appear in another NWA promotion...also note that the dates upon which he loses the NWA and WCW title are different... ~Flair was stripped of the belt on July 1, 1991 when he was fired from the promotion. #10: May 19th, 1991 - Ric Flair defeated Tatsumi Fujinami to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship for the ninth time. *Please note, during the period that Tatsumi Fujinami was NWA Champion, Flair was still the WCW World Champion. ~Flair was stripped of the belt on September 8th, 1991 when he went to WWE, also note worthy is that Ric Flair was NWA Champion a full two months past when he was stripped of the WCW Championship... #11: January 19th, 1992 - Ric Flair won the Royal Rumble to win the WWE Championship for the first time. ~Flair dropped the belt to Randy Savage on April 5, 1992 #12: September 1st, 1992 - Ric Flair deeated Randy Savage to win the WWE Championship for the second time. ~Flair dropped the belt to Bret Hart on October 12, 1992. #13: July 18th, 1993 - Ric Flair defeated Barry Windham to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship for the tenth time. ~In September of 1993, WCW left the NWA organisation, and Flair was officially stripped of the belt. #14: July 18th, 1993 - Ric Flair defeated Barry Windham to win the International World Heavyweight Championship for the first time. *When WCW left the NWA umbrella in September 1993, Flair was still the NWA Champion. Since by this point the WCW television audience had gotten use to seeing both a NWA and WCW Champion on their show, Flair kept using the big gold belt which had previously been the symbol for the NWA Title, only the announcers began calling it the International World Heavyweight Championship. Flair is considered the first champion despite dropping the title within a week or two of them "changing the name" of the belt he was holding... ~Flair droped the belt to Rick Rude on September 19, 1993. #15: December 27th, 1993 - Ric Flair defeated Vader to win the WCW World Heavyweight Champion for the second time. ~Flair was stripped of the belt after a double pin with Ricky Steamboat on April 23, 1994. #16: April 24th, 1994 - Ric Flair defeated Ricky Steamboat to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship for the third time. ~Flair droped the belt to Hulk Hogan on July 17, 1994 #17: June 23rd 1994 - Ric Flair defeated Sting to win the International World Heavyweight Champion for the second time. ~The title is officially unified with the WCW World Heavyweight Championship (which Flair held at the time) and the nightmare that was the International World Title is mostly forgotten about by everyone... #18: December 27th, 1995 - Ric Flair defeated Randy Savage to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship for the fourth time. ~Flair droped the belt to Randy Savage on January 22, 1996. #19: February 11, 1996 - Ric Flair defeated Randy Savage to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship for the fifth time. ~Flair droped the belt to The Giant on April 22, 1996. #20: March 14th, 1999 - Ric Flair defeated Hulk Hogan to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship for the sixth time. ~Flair droped the belt to Diamond Dallas Page in a Four Way Match on April 11, 1999. #21: May 15th, 2000 - Ric Flair defeated Jeff Jarrett to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship for the sevnth time. ~Flair was stripped of the belt and the title was handed to Jeff Jarrett. #22: May 29th, 2000 - Ric Flair was handed the title by Kevin Nash to become the WCW World Heavyweight Champion for the eighth time. ~Flair droped the belt to Jeff Jarrett that same night.
