His name was "Vito." It's very close to your name. Also, you'd be surprised how many straight men like to dress up in women's clothes. He was a very good talent, but the WWE shying away from the gimmick instead of embracing the issues it brings up was typical for them.

On a lower scale level, it was similar to how Muhammad Hassan was such a deep character that got labelled as an "evil foreigner." I don't believe it was ever stated that Vito was gay, but it's just the "cross-dressing" angle to people. It could have at least been used similarly to Goldust's gimmick.

Anyway, I have to agree with those who bring up DX segments and even John Cena. I mean, there's just something so...cheesy about them. Some Diva segments can come up as awkward, too. Back when they used to do stupid "Ice-cream eating competitions" and shit doing the Diva Searches. It wasn't close enough to porn to be hot, and it wasn't treating the women as anything better than objects of desire. I don't know who that would have appealed to, but it was someone with weird fetishes.

The Boogeyman also deserves mention. Everything about that character was...awkward. He came in before the WWE has entered the PG-era properly, so there was some resistence from me to accept him as a wrestling character.

When they did introduce him, they originally gave him this sort of cool, quirky backstory. "Oh, he's an actor who was set to play The Boogeyman in a new television show, but went too far into character and is now a full-time Boogeyman." Not the best thing in the world, but as far as guys who are nuts, or dipped into weird rituals and such, it worked enough. But that view of the character was pretty soon forgotten, and he was just this guy we accepted was this mystical being who just happened to be in wrestling.

And every time I watch TNA, I just cannot help but cringe about Abyss. It's just not...right. I'm not sure if he's meant to have actual powers, or it's just his confidence. I'm not sure why he didn't have confidence in the first place. I'm not sure that I like him as a retarded guy, and I don't know if I am meant to sympathise with him or live vicariously through him. It's really hard to do any of these things, because the character is so abstractly not human. It's like they've taken the Mankind character, and taken away all the wit involved in it. For some reason, I imagine Hogan and Bischoff sitting around still holding a sort of grudge against the Mankind character being the turning point in the Monday Night Wars, and them now trying to somehow replicate that success without actually understanding why it worked.

It's sad, because the other guy that is getting pushed right now, D'Angelo Dinero, is one of the most exciting, natural, charismatic and likable presences in professional wrestling. It's a huge contrast, and sadly, I can see Hogan choosing to go with Abyss for the future, and not Dinero, which I feel is a huge mistake.

I remember showing Hogan's comeback to my friends who aren't into wrestling at all, and they were like "Wow... Is Mr Nanny really saving a retard from terrorists? And the people are chanting U-S-A, U-S-A?".

I feel uneasy watching The Band in TNA, too. I know they are meant to be heels and all, but seeing Scott Hall look as drunk as he does, and hearing Sean Waltman talk like he's from a time period no one can remember, just doesn't sit right with me. It's sad, and I'd rather not see it.

Yeah, I think they hinted on commentary many times that Vito was simply wearing a dress to the ring because it made his opponent uneasy. Looked like he might have been primed to be in the US Title mix but then they dropped the gimmick suddenly and wished him the best in his future endeavors.

I'm not saying his gimmick made me uncomfortable personally, I am just saying that it would be hard to explain to people unfamiliar with how retarded/silly wrestling can get. I imagine it would be difficult to defend watching that to people that aren't wrestling fans.

I kind of liked the Vito dress wearing gimmick. From the start I knew WWE was going to drop it eventually. There could have been a great moral to the gimmick, but WWE never really allowed it to get that far. Cole mentioned it a few times during commentary, but there could have been a much better storyline about how he's just a normal guy who likes to wear dresses sometimes and doesn't want to be treated differently because of it.

Kane has been a part of many cringe worthy moments... por guy. One that stands out for me was fake Kane. The wig. The outfit. The stiff movements. Everything about it was....... just bad. I was glad when WWE dropped it and never mentioned it again one or two weeks later. It's one of the few times they dropped something out of the blue that I was happy with.

The Vito gimmick wasn't great, but I think part of the reason it failed was because of Michael Cole. Every time Vito and his dress were in the ring I knew we'd be hearing about how he was still a man's man and he and Cole frequently got beer together. Coming from Michael Cole it came off as totally gay. They should have kept it simple and had it be Vito is a tough guy wearing a dress and when you get beaten by him you've been beaten by a man in a dress. Leave Michael Cole and his bar stories out. Leave Vito's playful dancing out. He should have been like Goldberg but in a dress.
