I don't hate Cena as a person or a character. Could his character be better? Sure.

With Cena they made the fatal mistake they continually seem to make when turning a popular heel into a babyface - they make them "vanilla". We cheer heels for a reason. Whatever reason that is irrelavant, but what they need to realise is that in order for us to keep cheering they have to have the guy do the same things he did as a heel now that he is a face.

With Cena his rapper persona got him over, all they had to do was change his focus from babyfaces to heels. Same attitude, same edge to the charater, diffrent focus. We've seen it time and time again in WWE (Orton's first turn, Carlito, MVP, etc).
At least they seemed to have corrected this with Orton's current babyface/tweener run.

Yes, he wa shoved down our throats. Yes, we could do without him overcoming the odds every other week (esecially given how many times he has done it, how can we be expected to believe he won't this time?). Yes, his matches/promos are now "by the number". But that all comes from higher up in the company (mostly).

I thought Cena was good in the ring when he debuted (pre-jean shorts) and we all agree his promos during his rapper gimmick were good. IMO Cena has the goods, he's just not allowed to use them.

Maybe part of that is that he's not been allowed to turn heel - he hasn't been able to show his versatility. IMO it's far more difficult to be a longterm babyface than a heel. So, we go on hoping that the heel turn will come.

Who knows, we've all heard/made the Cena - Hogan comparisions,after 10+ years as a the babyface, who'd have thought that Hogan would become a top heel?

Just another 5 years for us to wait for that epic Cena turn...

Cena busts his ass. I may not enjoy watching him most of the time (he does have his moments), but I do appreciate that he does work. Cena is one of the top guys for a reason. Several, actually. He's kid friendly, but he's also a great PR face, and he's willing to work. Hard. These elements make him great for WWE in all elements except pleasing the adult base.

On a side note, anyone else think if Cena's rap album had sold better, we might see a completely different face of WWE?

I don't hate Cena. I've been entertained by him plenty of times. Sometimes I enjoy him for the simple fact that when he wins, so many people get pissed off.

My thoughts on John Cena


There are a few reasons I do not care much for Mr. Cena and they are as follows:


1. He is a product of WWE over booking. The heavy saturation has caused WWE fans (including myself) to feel smothered and alienated.

2. WWE-PG humor. Don't get me wrong. John Cena can talk. He is one of the best mic guys in the business. But his goofy ramblings are starting to wear thin on me.


3. The Super Cena Run. While it is a thing of the past, It is always in the back of my mind and I worry that we will see that again every time he is in the title picture...which is constantly. Some time away from the title picture would def. help me get past this.



So here it is: Cena can wrestle a good main event match. Cena is great on the mic (even though currently he is way to goofy for my liking).

Problem is Cena has been shoved down our throats for far too long. He needs a break from the title scene and a slight make over.

Yes, WWE, we KNOW we are supposed to love him and realize he is THE FACE of the company....but having the same thing over and over does nothing but alienate the fan base. Not totally Cena's fault but that is why I don't care for him much currently.

I hate his smugness.

On a side not when I went to Wrestlemania in March I was quite surprised that there was a pretty large group of fans who don't like him.
Gotta give him credit, whenever I go to a WWE show in person I see more Cena shirts than anyone else.

I can stand Cena. Barely. I think when (and that's a BIG when) they start allowing a little more things to go by instead of worrying about the PG rating, he could be better. But considering he is the face of the WWE and that the WWE is all about PG right now, he's going to be stupid, goofy and sell tons of merchandise. So, bottom line....we'll see if my opinion changes in ten years when the PG stuff ends. Till then.... not a fan.

I generally dislike Cena's character because, as a few of you have said, it's too cheesy, too over the top. He got beaten down by Nexus week after week, and he kept making jokes about it. I think a character that makes light of serious things like that belongs in the mid card. But when your WWE champion loses his title unfairly, then he comes out and makes mayonnaise jokes and laughs, that tells me that John Cena, the character, doesn't care about being WWE champion.

I just don't remember any other champion in the main event being so light hearted about everything. I mean, even when the guy gets mad, it looks comical. He tries to talk angry and it just sounds out of place. I do think the guy belongs as a cocky/ cowardly heel.

But in todays wrestling/ WWE landscape, he's cheered too much to be turned. Why would they, when they are raking in the cash from kids wanting to see him and wanting to dress like him?

I've said it before, but just like Hogan with the nWo deal, we'll only see a Cena heel turn when the reactions die down. Not when he gets booed despite being a face. But when the target audience stop caring about him as a face.

So you think he can wrestle well, cut good promos and have unlimited respect for him, but you hate his "gimmick"? That is the most ass-tarded thing i've ever heard.

I hated Ricky Steamboats fire breathing dragon gimmick. I hated Tito Santanas matador gimmick. I didnt boo the shit out of them everytime they hit the ring.

It all boils down to simple jealousy. He is a pretty boy, (I am secure enough in my masculinity to say that) so he cant possibly be a good wrestler. Shawn Michaels faced the same delema for a while. Pure and simple, people do not like him because he is cheered by every female in the building.

I dont hate John Cena. I just wish they would not try to make him look like Superman all the time...that's all.

In my opinion the guy is no worse than Sheamus or Batista in the ring, and he's an actual nice guy...does things outside the ring for kids, Make-A-Wish and such, and that, no matter how horrible he may be in the ring, puts him over the top with me, cause not all "stars" do those things.

To be honest, I don't care about what John Cena does outside of wrestling. Sure he does the make a wish stuff, and all the PR stuff for WWE, and that is fantastic. But back in the day during the 90's and before, nobody cared about that. It's his character that wrestling fans care about. I mean, who hates a wrestler because they did drugs or did something stupid? Randy Orton by all accounts has been a dick in the past, but that won't change how people see him on camera, if he's playing an awesome character.


Now I'm not saying everything backstage and beyond is irrelevant to wrestling fans all together, because myself, along with so many other fans, will buy autobiographies, watch career based DVDs, and read the news on the internet. But I'm just saying that none of that effects the way people see them on TV, any more than celebrity news and rumours wouldn't stop me from seeing a movie and enjoying it.

Well hello people of TPWW.
Seeing as this will be my first post here, I figured a good place to start would be in the current Cena-hating thread. (It's such a safe things, since I'll just echo what has already been said)

The reasons for disliking/hating Cena are mostly because he's made out to be the Wolverine of wrestling. Only instead of being bad ass whilst being invincible, he's just predictable and boring!
For me it seemed to hit a new low when he beat Batista using the almighty power of duct tape (http://cheezburger.com/View/3477264640) - sadly it hasn't been able to rise much from the stupidity of that - although his talks have become slightly more entertaining.

He works hard I'm sure, and he is unfortunately stuck in a role. So I guess I don't hate John Cena the person as much as I hate John Cena the character.

His attire is overly stupid, just to sell more merchandise - I mean who the hell needs _two_ sweatbands on each arm?
