They need capes (freeflowing), bandannas and headbands...stuff like that.

I miss mix & match hair as well.

I just saw this on a website:

WWE SmackDown! Vs. Raw is scheduled for release exclusively on PlayStation 2 for holiday 2004 and will feature the WWE's two biggest brands battling it out for supremacy. The game will feature all the wrestlers from both shows, new features and improved graphics.

--------------------

Everyone from both shows..................that means guys like Paul London and Akio would be in....................oh dear God I hope it's true.

Doubt it. Keep in mind the people who usually report on WWE games seem to know jack about WWE games. Read previews right now and see how they talk about "authenic themes" and "wide selection of matches" like they haven't been the norm for 6-years-plus now.

Because of the details of the story I can't reveal much, but know this:

In less than one week you'll finally have what you're looking for. How much less than a week? I can't say yet, but keep those eyes peeled. That is all.

I thought the next smackdown game Had John Cena in on the cover and was going to be named "Word Life".

Anyway I think Smackdown should do what raw did with attire. Hats and bandannas get knocked off your head another wrestler can pick up the item and put it on.

I also like in Raw where you can attack someone coming to the ring. Smackdown should incorrporate that as well.

Here it is, the first info for WWE Smackdown! vs RAW straight from IGN

As passionate as the teams at THQ and Yuke's are about their WWE Smackdown franchise, getting them to talk about the next iteration of the series hasn't exactly been easy. Originally announced last month exclusively through IGN prior to the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the sixth installment known as Smackdown! vs. RAW has been quickly transformed into one of the most talked about forthcoming PS2 titles this year. And with speculation and rumors about the game already running rampant, we felt it our duty to get to the bottom of it all so that we could set the record straight.

Sadly that's easier said than done. As our buddies at THQ are keeping tight-lipped regarding the implementation of this year's roster and feature set. "Honestly, we're just not ready to reveal too much about the game yet," said the THQ representatives we spoke with. "In fact, you guys [IGN] will probably be doing most of the roster revelations yourselves when you kick off your Smackdown Countdown later this year. We like secrets. Secrets are good."

Apparently the roster isn't the only thing remaining covert, though; as THQ has an absolutely massive undisclosed gameplay option that will be announced sometime over the next couple of weeks. And while we can't get official confirmation as to just what that secret may end up being just yet, the word on the street is that it's that it's the one extra that everyone has been waiting for since the advent of PS2 Network Adapter: Online connectivity. And from what we understand, that's not so far off from the truth.

Speculation aside, we were at least able to confirm several of Smackdown vs. RAW's specifics in relation to what's been left over from last year's effort Here Comes the Pain. Six-person simultaneous play, for instance, has once again been brought back so that players can make the most of a pair of Multi-tap peripherals. And every single one of 2003's game modes have returned to action too; with match types like Hell in the Cell, Slobber Knocker, Table Matches, and First Blood back and bigger than ever. Much to our chagrin, THQ would not confirm any of its new modes or gameplay features in time for us to meet our deadline; though the company representatives did assure us that Smackdown vs. RAW would boast several of them before all is said and done.

Visually the game has been given a boost too. Character models and attire in particular have a lot more detail than they did before, with a continued emphasis on facial recreation and animation. "You're going to freak out when you see this new one in motion," whispered a THQ employee that wished to remain anonymous. "It's easily the best looking game in the series."

Old-school fans should also be pleased to know that legends have been reinstated for the roster as well, with a stronger focus on big name stars and classic personalities. And while there will definitely be a few historical grapplers from last year's version to make the rounds all over again, THQ has also included some new representatives to bolster the ranks. We're told that the updated roster will be comprised of some of the biggest classic names in the industry too; but because of ongoing contractual negotiations, can't be named.

But that doesn't mean that we didn't get the names of some of the planned Smackdown vs. RAW active superstars. As we finally managed to get the THQ guys to spill the beans regarding the lineup. "It will definitely have all the champions in there, how could it not?" remarked aTHQ rep. "Of course, we'll have several surprises and divas on the list too, but for now, you can bet that the champions and their top contenders will be in there." Specifically, players can expect to see Randy Orton, John Cena, Triple H, Chris Benoit, Shawn Michaels, and Eddie Guerrero. Unforunately we couldn't confirm whether or not Tag Team champ Edge or the oft-wanted La Resistance would be in there.

But secrecy seems to be Smackdown vs. RAWs theme this year. As THQ have plans to reveal details more meticulously than in the years before it. The company did confirm one final tidbit about the game, though, which is its release date: November 2004. And with almost half a year left, the time should give anxious WWE gamers plenty of time to digest exactly what lies before them.

The good news is that your buddies at IGN will be with you every step of the way. As we plan on continuing our popular Smackdown Countdown features from seasons previous with the most information, media, and news regarding the game than anywhere else in the world. In fact, on our media page below we've included the first handful of screenshots taken from an early build. And you can expect us to return again next week (and rather soon at that) with the first official trailer that you won't be able to find anywhere else. So saddle up WWE fans -- today's tidbits was only the beginning. We'll be back again with more next week.

now w/o any further delay, here are the first screenshots of the only 2 fully known superstars, the Legend Killer Randy Orton and the Doctor of Thuganomics John Cena

Kick ass. Online play would rule many times over; if that's the case. Why keep the roster secret, we can safely guess who's gonna be in. Legends returning is abit sketchy, but I don't mind. It feels like yesterday I opened HCTP, now the hype for the next Smackdown is not only alive, it's damn there OVER with less than a season to wait.

I'm acually very impressed by those screens, even if Orton's face does look a tad bit off.

Looks to me like this will be a bigger leap graphically than HCTP was over SYM.

There's no doubt that our preview of WWE Smackdown! vs. RAW generated plenty of excitement when we ran it over the weekend, but nothing gets a fan base keyed up more than a brand new movie. With that in mind, your buddies over at THQ and here at IGN have teamed up to bring you the first official trailer from Smackdown! vs. RAW. And while it certainly doesn't show that much by way of gameplay, at least it makes an attempt at drama -- something that the world of sports entertainment is renowned for.

To check it out for yourselves, click on our media page link below to enjoy our free 320x240 video files in the Windows format, with a special 640x480 hi-res version also available especially for our IGN Insider subscribers. We've even included one brand new hi-resolution screenshot as an added bonus!

As always we'll be back with more on Smackdown! vs. RAW over the next couple of weeks and remind you to stay tuned for our annual Smackdown Countdown when it begins sometime this August. See you again, soon.

I would like to see everyone have a good entrance, not just the top stars. They gave Christian the exact same entrance in Smackdown 5, and they did in 4. I was so disappointed.

I would like the gameplay to be a bit slower. I want the Hell in a Cell, ladder, and cage matches to be more realistic. None of this climbing the cage/ladder in .3 seconds. I want to be able to use the cage as a weapon.

Pretty nice attention to detail. The crowd looks very nice along with the whole arena (as much as I could see). The ref still walks like he's in fast forward but oh well.

If the game had a seperate disc for Season, Customization, and the Matches, I doubt it could be pasted unless someone took the same direction.

They better take use of the HDD this time, downloadable roster updates would be very nice.

While I wouldn't go that far to specify them, I agree the women should be on equal ground with the men in a lot of respects. They should be able to have first blood matches, and compete for the Women's Title in Season Mode, just like in Smackdown: Just Bring It. What was the point of having Jazz, et al hold titles when they can't even enter season mode to challenge for them?

^^ Yeah, thats true, I hope women can compete in season mode too. And also, I hate who that if you pick Flair/HBK as a ref, they're strength falls down to like Zero. They get knocked out so easliy, I think that's stupid. I also think that they should let ANY wrestler be a ref, not just like 5 people/CAW's

Wait, you mean you couldn't have HHH as a ref? It had to be Bischoff and certain others? Crap... that's right. They do need to fix that. I never noticed because I always had CAWs playing ref. Sometimes I wanted to recreate the hilarity of "REF 3:16"...thinking this is pretty much gonna be the last Stone Cold appearance in a WWE game...unless he's resigned to being one of the Legends.

here's the official interview with THQ thanks to ps2.ign.com

It's a crowded year for wrestling titles on the PlayStation 2 and it's going to take a whole lot of bells and whistles to prove which product is best. Historically, the winner of that honor has been Yuke's and THQ's SmackDown franchise, but with such financially secure heavyweights as Konami and Electronic Arts throwing their hats into a market already populated by Acclaim, Eidos, and Bandai, the pair definitely has their work cut out for them. After all, the effort with last year's Here Comes the Pain was easily the best in the franchise so far; leaving plenty of expectations and standards that THQ will have to meet and surpass.

To find out how THQ is handling this challenge, we sat down with THQ's Smackdown! vs. RAW Product Manager Devin Knudsen. Devin has been around the SmackDown franchise forever too, and is a self-professed "ultra-fan" of professional wrestling. If there's anybody out there who can give us the answers we want, it's this guy. Here's how the conversation went down:

IGN: Thanks for the taking the time to answer our questions. We suppose our first question right out of the gate would be, What was it about last year's SmackDown title that you thought could be improved upon most this year?

Devin Knudsen: There are two main areas that we are striving to improve this year with SmackDown! vs. Raw. An overall improvement of presentation to the player was the first area we choose to tackle. A fan should feel as they are watching actual WWE programming and all aspects of the game should focus on accomplishing this goal. The graphics of the game, the audio elements and the all of the Superstars mannerisms and personalities should provide the player with a suspension of disbelief.

The second element is user interaction. A fan should feel as though they have control over all aspects of the game. There shouldn't be moments where the player feels helpless and is just watching an animation play out; we want the player to feel like he's part of the action unfolding on the screen.

Cena poses all tough-like

IGN: With that said, what kind of changes have you made with Smackdown! vs. RAW that addresses those issues?

Devin: We've added several new features that will greatly enhance the user's experience and interaction with the game, as well as improving on last year's features. One obvious improvement that players will notice when they get a look at the game is the graphical upgrade. Yuke's did a fantastic job with this year's Superstar models. They've increased the poly counts significantly, especially in the Create-A-Superstar area.

IGN: How much of an impact has fan and editorial feedback had when sitting down to prepare for a new installment of the Smackdown franchise?

Devin: As the Rock would say…"This is the people's champ" The SmackDown! Series is not the only wrestling series out there, but it is the most popular. The only way to keep the fans excited is by keeping a close ear to the ground and delivering on what the fans want to see. Being a fan of the WWE, I'm very passionate when it comes to my product line. Our dev team is constantly scanning the message boards, looking at competitive product and putting together focus groups to get a pulse on what the "real" WWE fans are looking for in our videogames. When putting together a feature set for a new title, the team lays out franchise objectives, which are heavily influenced by the feedback we gather from all of the fans.

IGN: So what are some examples of how you took that feedback and incorporated it into this year's game?

Devin: I can't really get into the new features at this time, but there have been changes to almost every aspect of the game. For example, we made several tweaks here and there to improve things like submissions, grapples, weapons and audio.

IGN: Cool. So how about the new features this year, what are some of the new goodies that fans can expect?

Devin: We can't spill the beans yet, but just like last year we will deliver a game that significantly improves upon the last iteration. There is a big surprise down the pipe that is sure not to disappoint.

IGN: THQ is more secretive than ever this year? Why all the cloak and dagger stuff?

Devin: It's all part of the master plan! Seriously, we've got some real big things planned with this year's offering and we're looking forward to letting all you guys in on all the fun leading up to launch. You guys are our biggest supporters and we're glad to reward your readers by making IGN the WWE HQ.

IGN: Okay then throw us something new. Tell us at least two things we don't already know about Smackdown! vs. RAW?

Devin: We will see the return of a feature from wrestling's past and the introduction of a feature that no one thought they would see in a WWE title.

IGN: How about the roster, what changes are there this year? Who's out of the lineup altogether and who are a couple of the new guys? More importantly, do we have La Resistance in there or what?

Devin: WWE SmackDown! Vs. Raw will have the top Superstars from RAW and SmackDown as well as divas and some really exciting Legends to unlock. There are some good surprises here. Unfortunately, that is all I can say about the roster, but IGN will be the first to know, as we will roll out the roster with IGN through their ongoing Superstar profile.

IGN: Some of our readers were a bit disappointed in last year's career mode. It had a lot of great ideas but some complained that it was too repetitive and too short. Will career be improved on this year, and will it be similar to say, Day of Reckoning?

Devin: The season mode has seen a great progression over the years and this year is no exception. We know that the season mode is an integral part of the game and we have gone to great lengths this year to make sure we deliver a season mode that will satisfy the fans. We work closely with the WWE and their writers to find out what directions they are taking with their Superstars and their storylines.

This definitely serves as the underline foundation for what we do. The emphasis has been put on creating storylines that are completely original. This unique blend of storylines will satisfy WWE fans while delivering a compelling and rewarding experience. Don't worry; fans will be blown away with what we've got in store for this year's career mode.

IGN: How about create-a-wrestler, do you have plans to expand on that feature?

Devin: As I mentioned earlier, there will be a dramatic visual upgrade over last year's offering. The quality of the textures and models are significantly improved. We also took steps to simplify the user interface. I can't get into any of the new items in the Create mode at this time.

IGN: And now the big question: there are a lot of rumors pointing to this being online, will it be?

Devin: Unfortunately, we can't comment on this.

IGN: Ah ha, very interesting. Well anyway man, thanks a lot, we'll be bugging you again real soon.

Devin: Unfortunately, we can't comment on this.

IGN would like to thank Devin Knudsen, Kyle Walker, THQ, and all those involved with making this interview possible (and a special thanks to our readers for their quick question submissions). We'd also like to let the fans know that they should keep an eye out for PSM Magazine's September issue (on sale in early August) for more on Smackdown! vs. RAW. In it, former IGNPS2 and IGN Xbox editor Kaiser Hwang reveals a great number of details complete with new media for the print crowd. Of course, we'll be back with some more info ourselves in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.
