awesome demo. Bening able to slice & dice everything into bits was cool.
The fucking enemies seemed a bit strong. Sliced and diced on one for about 30 seconds before he fucking died. |

Some enemies require you to chip them down in normal combat before you slice them up. Think of Free Slicing enemies as a finishing move, though some action let you Free Slice them early on.

I didn't use the Free Slicing too much, unless chopping down trees. For the enemies, I was button mashing. That might have been my whole problem

More importantly for me, a great action game to follow up Bayonetta. DmC and Ninja Gaiden 3 failed in that regard and I love to see this studio show people how it's done.

I know. I cracked through half an hour of DmC with something feeling off, but enjoying it a little and then I realised that force feedback wasn't working. So I'm waiting on a patch to give it another try, but even the demo of Rising is better than anything I've played of DmC.

I was really looking forward to this game and then it fizzled out very suddenly a few months back. I can't even remember why. I think it might have been when it was said it would be a sort of Beyonetta type deal, like the gif shows above. I'm not really into games that have the ultra Japanese fight scene thing. Like someone running across the top of a sea of gunfire or whatever else.
I was excited when it looked like MGS with precise cutting abilities and everything was being diced to bits. Downloaded the demo and haven't even touched it, yet. |

BAH GAWD LES ENFANTS TERRIBLE ARE OUT OF CONTROL
![]() Japan also gets a wooden sword that everytime it's swung, Solid Snake speaks. Been hit with a mild spoiler. Apparently the game is very self aware of how fucked up the MGS story is and I don't know what this explains, but apparently something is explained to Raiden with: SPOILER: show Should be on this tonight. Cannot fucking wait. |

I gave the demo a spin and wasn't impressed, really. The sword thing was cool for about 5 seconds and then it wore off. The free blade mode actually would probably have been a lot better if it was using the Wii motion plus, which I know is impossible. At least then it wouldn't mean being stuck in place as you used it.
Also was a bit let down by the cutting of scenery. I'd have though cutting something would cause it to react in a more realistic way. I sliced the cable holding a glass chandelier to the roof, expecting it would fall and shatter or, at least, make some kind of noise. It just boringly fell to the ground as a big stiff chunk and vanished. No crash, no physics beyond the falling. It was as if I'd dropped an empty cardboard box. Even slicing a tree wont cause it to fall unless you cut it and the jump at it. Combat did nothing for me either. It seems to be either mash X, mash Y or try and slice someone in half before someone else kicks you in the face. Even though I did manage to slice one guys face clean off, not his head, just his face, I still thought it wasn't so great. I think I can safely say this game is not for me. I got to the Cyborg Panther Guy and turned it off. I'd take Snakes slooooow, sneaky gameplay over Raidens fast swordplay any day. |

Depends what you call an action game. Max Payne is an action game and I enjoy that.
Still, doesn't really excuse the way the chandelier didn't react at all to falling awkwardly. Did anyone see the cat on the beach at the start of the demo and did you try to slice it? Last edited by Drakul; 02-18-2013 at 04:23 AM. |

No, no.
The Action Game genre is a specific type of game featuring a single star who battles often stylishly against hordes of mooks that attack en mas. They're usually melee heavy using swords in particular, though guns were in the forefather of this genre; Devil May Cry. Kamiya, then of Capcom, begun this deviation of 'hack and slash' with DMC when he felt the advent of 3D games were too slow compared to action side-scrollers (Mega Man, Gunstar). With a happy accident of design, he crafted DMC and it lead the action genre. These games are very specifically Japanese in direction and character design. The scenarios are often over the top with a high degree of stylish presentation. Combat is the main draw, with depth similar to a fighting game. This is why all Japanese action games are 60fps. Japanese Action Games: Devil May Cry 1/2/3 Ninja Gaiden 1/2 Bayonetta 1/2 Metal Gear Rising Godhand (to a degree) With God of War a sub-type of this genre emerged that focused less on combat and more on spectacle. QTEs and a more relatable story are traits of Western action games. I don't prefer them as their combat aren't as good as Japanese fare. They don't promise 60fps and lack the style I've grown used to. But whatever. Western Action Games: God of War 1/2/3/Ascension DmC Ninja Gaiden 3 (Japanese yet adopted Western action game tropes to its detriment) WET Ninja Blade (Same as NG3) Important to note the Action games are not the same as Hack and Slash games (Dynasty Warriors, etc), something journalist and gamers infuriate me by misunderstanding. So when I say 'Action Game' I don't mean a game with action in it, which would include just about everything. I mean stylish combat heavy games like DMC classic. These are games where combat exploration is deep and rewarding, where action is high and sometimes unforgiving. But they're not for everybody. |

They need a more specific name for the genre though. Games like red dead and max Payne ARE action games. Just not the same type of action game as bayonetta or devil may cry.
I like to refer to them as Stylish Action games. |

![]() LOVE FUCKING RISING THOUGH HOLY SHIT. The boss battles are amazing and I love how you can theoretically play stealthy through the game. Then with the music playing and getting louder as the boss battles get closer to being beat, the vocals kick in and fuuucckkk yeahhhh. |

I've been feeling shitty as well as being busy so I haven't played as much as I'd liked, but I was watching streams of people get up to the point I'm at an every boss battle the whole chat flips out when the vocals kick in.
The biggest thing I'm amazed with is that Platinum were approached by Konami on December 2011. I'm astonished that they got a game out of this quality so quickly, even if it is built on the Bayonetta engine. Really hoping that this is a seller as its already getting critical success and that Konami ask Platinum for a sequel with more time. The game is short and some scenery is repeated which are the only signs it was a short development, but fuck me, a next gen sequel for this would send me over the edge. |

The VR missions to collect are a nice touch, but I found out last night that some enemies have data to collect in their left hands. Also, some levels have different paths depending on your actions so although it's 5 hours, I'll replay the hell out of it like I did Lollipop Chainsaw.
Revengance difficulty is also ridiculous apparently, but never feels unfair. |
