Thing is, Orton, Edge, etc ARE playing PG characters. You can have plenty of characters with their attitude and still be a PG show.
The problem is that they are focusing on the younger audience and for a while wasn't giving much to the older audience. They're starting to do that now a little more versus a year or two ago, but they could ditch a good portion of the kid-friendly stuff and still be successful on a PG rating. Would TV-14 help? No. It wouldn't, honestly. It's about the writing. Turning the product TV-14 right this minute isn't going to fix anything, because you'll still have the same writers who don't pay attention to history, are highly inconsistent and highly ADD. Turning to a TV-14 rating would mean a complete overhaul of creative. And at that point, they may as well keep it PG with better writers and reap the benefits of PG which, from a business standpoint, are huge. |

According to Dave Meltzer, RAW did a 2.7 rating last night.

Shit. I blame it on the fucking Packers and Bears. Not because they were playing, just because they exist. Fuck them again.

The 2.37 for Monday show is the lowest rating for a regular episode of RAW since October 27, 1997 – almost 13 years ago – before the Montreal Screwjob kicked off the Attitude Era.
That's not a good sign at all. |

Take a look at the Nexus angle. The entire thing was hotter than hell - right up until the point where Daniel Bryan choked out Justin Roberts with his tie. In the past, this kind of thing would not have been a problem. Austin and Rock have probably choked each other a hundred times with camera cables, ring ropes, etc. But in the new PG Era of the WWE, Daniel Bryan choking a dude with a tie is a PROBLEM. So they get rid of him for awhile to assuage the problem, and they tone back the violence of the Nexus storyline. Now, the group seems to have lost all of its edge. TV PG is part of the problem, but I agree that it's not the whole problem. The problem goes back to the writing, the portrayal and lack of development of the WWE's top stars, and honestly, a lack of true, honest to God competitive spirit on the show. |

The Nexus angle was amazing with or without the tie choking. And it wasn't a matter of TV-PG, it was a matter of Benoit being a douche and hanging himself.
I'm not saying TV-14 wouldn't help with the right writing team and I'm not saying I don't want to see it, I just don't see it as being as big of a problem as everyone makes it out to be. Yes, there's a huge demographic they're missing out on (more realistically the 18-34) but we don't have to go back to the Attitude Era to make wrestling awesome again and bring in that demographic. The 18-34 demographic could easily be brought in with the right writing, and they would still have the benefits of TV-PG and the younger audience. Blood, "extreme" violence, sexual innuendo and swearing are all great and fun, but when it comes down to it, they're not what makes wrestling wrestling (except for the blood to an extent, but I've gone over this and actually think they could get away with it if they made it a rarity). And WWE is a much more mainstream company now. The PG rating brings in a lot more business opportunities. People have to realize that even if you want it back, TV-14 is likely not returning to WWE programming in the foreseeable future, so it's more realistic to work around the rating than to blame it and say "WWE WOULD BE SO MUCH BETTER IF THEY WENT TV-14!!!!11" Because it wouldn't be. |
