MY B tsn said it's a first round conditional so I guess it can be anywhere between a first and fourth round pick.

It wasn't the best pick, but it wasnt shit either. Gainey knows what he is doing. Look what he did for the Stars. Think about it, we got the best goalie this year in the draft..he'll be ready in like 3 years anyways, maybe we wont have theo then. No matter what though, we'll always be stacked in net. That is safe now, and we wont have to focus on that next year or anything.
Plus we just stole Latendresse in the freaking second round! That guy is huge, fucking strong, has a great shot, and crashes the net. Exactly what we needed. Plus no doubt about it, we're gonna sign free agents for imediate help this year. Draft picks you cant rely on for that anyways. |

In 3 years Garon should be the number 1 goalie. I honestly dont see this kid ever becoming a starter for the habs. If he develops nicely, he'll make great trade bait, but the habs are pretty secure with goalies now.

Ottawa Senators traded Radek Bonk to the Los Angeles Kings for a 3rd round selection (Shawn Weller) in 2004 then the Kings traded Bonk to the Montreal Canadiens with Cristobal Huet for Mathieu Garon and a 3rd round selection (Paul Baier) in 2004.
Bonk isnt half bad. I guess if the Habs thought they could keep Theo, this was a smart move. |

I've come to think it was a great move. It was a very good draft. The top goalie, plus two huge steals. This was a special year, in terms of all the free agents available this year. So why not draft the top goalie? He'll have time to develop moreso in the minors, then in 3 years time he'd be better suited to playing in the league. The Habs have just assured themselves solid goaltending for the next 5 years in any case. Probably more.
Also, drafting players by needs is alright, in any other year mind you, but Gainey is a smart man, he knows draft picks rarely make impacts right away anyways! There are a ton of free agents out there who can make immediate impacts. He not only fortified the future, but he can stil go out and sign guys for immediate help. Come to think of it, Bob is always one step ahead. He just took advantage of perhaps the only off season where you can pretty much expect to sign someone of worth for your team, while drafting for the future. Besides, he did draft by need afterwards anyways, picking up Latendresse. Fuckin A, I'm pretty happy overall. |
