Ok,just heard we're releasing 13 players(if you include Izzet,though he will go on a bosman).That includes Freund,Callum Davidson,Impey,Rogers(gone to Forest now),McKinlay,Guppy,Tom Williamson(youngster),Nicolas Priet(another youngster),Paul Murphy(reserve keeper)Sinclair,Junior Lewis and Craig Hignett.
Can't say i'm surprisde about most and if i'm honest i'm not too bothered about losing any of them.Hopefully Gillespie will be added to that list. Dabizas has been asked to stay but has hinted he'll leave if he gets an offer from a premiership club. |

I can't see any premiership side buying him.Unless we release him i think he could be here for another year.

Premiership Team of the Year?
Just an interesting take on the BBC for its Premiership team of the Year. I agree with every single player there unless someone can mention someone not in the BBC alternatives.Shearer

I don't think Johnson should be an alternative.Probably have Given or someone ahead of Kiely as an alternative also.
The team itself is about right,i would maybe disagree about Lauren but he's had a steady season and i can't think of a right back who's been great this season. Interesting also that Tim Howard was in the PFA team but didn't make any of the BBC alternatives, let alone the starting position. |

![]() Mind you, McAteer deserved to miss, and Whitley.... LOL what a cock. In that circumstance, the fact Vaesen was a mile off his line is irrelevant. Feel sorry for Mart Poom though. |

I hope Kevin Kyle is pleased with himself, though. Letting defenders and kids go up to take the penalties when they shouldn't have been. It shows how much bottle he has. Whitley should've known better than that, though.
McCarthy's reactions says it all really... |

Kyle was the youngest (Sunderland) player on the pitch at that point I think.
He's given 100% all season and it wouldn't have gotten down to penalties if it wasn't for his goals so I don't hold anything against him. Plus those defenders took suprisingly good penalties. Last edited by The Mackem; 05-17-2004 at 08:05 PM. |

![]() Just have a nationwide league thread(unless every league is being sponsered by coca cola) because then that includes people who follow lower league teams aswell as premiership, and Ricky, though he could be in the division one talk thing anyway. Mackem I honestly didn't want to play you lot next season.

To be honest, I'm not too clued up on Sunderland, but I just feel that if you're a forward, you should put yourself forward to take a penalty before a defender. You're a forward, that's what you do. Your job is to score goals, and as a forward, you're meant to practice penalties. In front of that goal, a forward would have a much better mindset than a defender. I agree with you that those defenders took surprisingly good penalties, and I know you can't fault Kyle if he's been outstanding all season, but Whitley's inexperience infront of goal (I think he's a defender, right?) has played a big part in costing you a trip to Cardiff.
You're right not to hold anything against him, as it's all very unfortunate, but you have to question Kyle in not taking a penalty. Even if he'd missed, I doubt he would've wasted it like Whitley did. I think that's why McCarthy was so angry, due to the way the penalty was missed. Penalties are an awful thing, though. You're always going to have your heroes and villians, but at the end of the day, it's all very unfortunate. I'm sure you don't need me adding to the disappointment of tonight, though, so I'll shush.

True, you could be Leeds, millions of pounds in debt, all of your best players leaving, etc., etc. Sunderland are a very good side, and they'll be back next year, no doubt about that. You've still had a good year, though, in terms of the FA Cup especially.

There's other basic stuff as well.
Despite not being world beaters, people put 11 players behind the ball. Of course not being the greatest we couldn't deal with this and couldn't break teams down. The most extreme example of this was WBA at home. Then there's the usual stuff like injuries to key players like Healy, Arca, Wright, Breen, Piper to an already depleted squad. I could probably list about 100 things that went against us over the play off games but in the end we just didn't do enough. No mistake about it we would have probably came back down but I'm more bothered about fiannacial security than humiliation at this point. It's possible we could be losing the best of an already not too good team

Give it time, Sunderland looked financially secure (I know not on the same scale as the big teams in Europe or anything) for a good time. Things change though. One moment you're on top of the world next you're almost f*cked. Leeds being the best example at the moment.

Oh yeah and if I was being picky about tonight, I would have went along the lines of...
If only we held on for a few more minutes If only the ref had blown for a foul on Poom for their goal If only the ref had seen some infraction by the opposition goalie If only Oster's penalty went in off the post If only the referee had shown some consistency and booked the main person who celebrated in the crowd (Powell) If only we could make our man advantage pay off If only Whitley had scored when he was almost clean through on goal If only the away goal rule was still used in the play offs Those were the first few that came to mind anyway ![]() That's football though. |

Yeah they are some pretty good reasons. I think it was a foul, but the keeper did go over easy and I don't think he had it. Regardless to this, I still think it was a foul.
