We wish we could tell you we played as someone other than the Sandman when we got out grubby paws on WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2008 at San Diego Comic-Con, but that would be a lie.
If you're too young -- or too mainstream -- you might not remember how awesome the ECW of old was. There were people diving off scaffoldings, Mike Awesome throwing Masato Tanaka from the ring through a table and onto the concrete and ladies that weren't afraid to get hit with steel chairs. It was like 300 in a bingo hall. Anyway, Sandman. Today, in front of the dozens -- and dozens -- of fans at the THQ booth, we took the ECW original into a hardcore match with Rey Mysterio. We thought about being one of the other superstars -- this build featured John Cena, Kane, Randy Orton, Triple H, Undertaker, Bobby Lashley, Chris Masters and Jeff Hardy -- but it's about time Sandman got some videogame love. The guy was only featured in a couple crappy Acclaim games. He faked being blind for an angle -- give him his spotlight, you Cena fans! So, if you're reading this, you're obviously a WWE fan and have probably read IGN's in-depth overview from a few weeks ago. In it, the article said the Sandman smashes a beer can on his head and enters from the crowd. Friends, that ain't the half of it. As the Sandman's theme kicks up, the main man walks into the audience from a side door with his Singapore cane in one hand and a beer in the other. He swigs the beer, slams the can repeatedly into his head and then spews the frothy beverage into the air. From there he marches through the impressively animated and detailed crowd, and the fans go nuts. He pushes past the throngs of folks -- some holding signs proclaiming that they're diva search rejects -- climbs onto the black barricade and hoists his cane into the air. That's how you make an entrance. Rey's introduction is equally as impressive. His music hits, the camera pans the cheering audience and then the highflier pops up from the depths of the stage. As a purple lightshow goes nuts in the arena, Rey runs around whipping the fans into a frenzy and then slides into the ring to share the spotlight with a scantily clad Lillian Garcia. The bell rings, Sandman moves in and lands a solid kick to Rey's gut. From there, Sandman basically owns the cruiserweight. Superplexes, steel chair shots and submission moves follow qs Rey prays for death ... we're pretty sure THQ has dialed the difficulty down for its all-ages demo. What was amazing for most of the first-timers stepping up to the control pad was how deep the controls were for being such a simple system. The left analog stick moves the wrestlers, the right analog stick performs simple grapples, run is controlled by holding a shoulder button and moving and submissions are now part of an analog-system where the person performing the move uses the stick to apply pressure and the opponent in pain tries to match the movements of an onscreen lock with the right analog stick to break the hold. Picking up weapons, climbing in and out of the ring and performing strike maneuvers are all as easy as a single button press. Although stunning visuals are expected from this generation, these guys still looked extremely impressive. From the sweat on Rey's chest to the tattoos on the Sandman, everything looked perfect -- even the fans holding up tired signs such as "I'm With Stupid" had animations for picking the poster board up from underneath their chairs and for putting it back. Before we jumped into our slobber knocker with Rey and Sandy, we took a brief spin through the options in WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2008. From the main menu was the jump-in-and-wrestle Quick Play, Exhibition, Create modes and online. The online option was blocked out, but the creation category had slots to build move sets, stables, superstars, entrances and championships. More than 200 new items will be available for this year's superstar creation mode and will be spread out across several customizable categories -- including but not limited to head, face, facial hair, face paint and piercings. Once we got into the match types, we found a number of the bouts blocked out but had the opportunity to choose from a normal fight, first blood, hardcore, ladder and last man standing. We chose hardcore, Sandman wailed on Rey with a steel chair, and in the end, the ECW original pounded a beer in celebration while his opponent writhed in pain in the background. November can't get here soon enough. credit - Greg Miller, ps3.ign.com |

This is gonna be sweet. Downloadable rosters (I think I hoped for that). Now all we need is online tournament. Like an online King of the Ring. I think in all games sweet online modes will be the future serious addictions. Just imagine the online mode for SD in like 3 years..but yea Im getting this for XMaS.

Looks pretty good. Biggest flaw I noticed was that Jeff went for a leg drop and Lashley's counter somehow had Jeff landing stomach-first on his knees...but they've had that in like every game.

It looks good, love the new chairshots, not liking the big blue bar though. I'm guessing thats the new momentum meter. It still sounds like the commentry is fucked, but then again it never was brilliant.

Looking good. The only glaring weakness was JBL's commentary. Pretty horrible, but it's still only his first game.

Why did they give JBL "Tazz's" commentary instead of giving him a new script to use, were they as lazy as usual in that aspect?

What they really should do is make them actually watch a game match (from the previous game I suppose) and let them ad-lib a bit while being fed lines like they do on TV. I think that would improve the quality of the commentary.
Obviously not everything would be recorded through it, but make them sit through and commentate, say, 30 matches and take samples from them. |

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008
GamingRing.com Q&A Date Interview Conducted 08/13/2007 Gamingring.com Recently had the chance to sitdown with THQ WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2008 product development staff members Bryan Williams and Dan Ryan. In this exclusive interview we asked about all 3 console versions of the game. You can expect more coverage of what promises to be the best WWE wrestling game ever released. Keep a look out daily for more videos, screens and interviews. Were just getting started. Nintendo WII Q: Will there be an option to play the game using the Gamecube controller instead of the WII Wand and nunchuck controls? A: Dan Ryan - Our main goal when creating the Wii version of the game was to offer players a completely different experience than on the other skus. In achieving this, we tailored the gameplay so that it fully utilized the Wii's unique controls, so much so that we didn't see any reason to make the game playable via the GameCube controller. Once players get in the ring with the Wii Remote for the first time, playing the game on a standard game pad will be the last thing on their minds. Q: Besides what was show can you give us some other examples of the WII Wand and Nunchuck controls for the game? A: Dan Ryan - Since E3, we've been implementing many of the Environmental Grapple-type moves that were such a hit in WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007. For example, some Superstars can Irish Whip their opponents into the corner by waving the Nunchuk, then hold the B button while waving the Wii Remote to set their opponents up for some Ric Flair-style chops to the chest. Players can then repeatedly wave the Wii Remote in a backhand motion, right along with their Superstars onscreen, as they brutally slap their hands against the chests of their opponents. Sony Playstation 3 Q: Is there any use of the Sony sixaxxis tilt controls in this years game? A: Bryan Williams - This is arguably the most frequently asked question, and for obvious reasons. While I would love to put an end to all of the speculation and Internet rumors right here and now, I can't. As much as it pains me, the fans are going to have to wait just a little bit longer before a statement is released regarding any possible Sixaxxis tilt functionality. Q: Will this years online play be as full featured as the Xbox 360 version? A: Bryan Williams - Information regarding our online feature set, for both the PS3 and 360, will be forthcoming. Xbox 360 Q: In the trailer in its closing moments there was a scene of the Sandman lighting a flaming table. Is that a cut scene or is that a player intiated move. And if so how would the player perform the move? A: Bryan Williams - The ability to light tables on fire is in fact a player initiated move, and it's not just tables that you can light on fire either! Superstars will also be able to ignite barbed wire 2x4's in a swell of fire as well. Lighting one of these objects on fire is as simple as having a maxed out momentum meter. When your Superstar's momentum meter is maxed out, simply stand next to a set table and press the finisher button to set the table ablaze. Igniting the barbed wire 2x4 is performed the same way. While holding a barbed wire 2x4 with a maxed out momentum meter, press the finisher button to turn an already dangerous weapon into a flaming, dangerous weapon! Q: What are the differences between the Xbox 360 version and the PS3 version? A: Bryan Wiliams - While there may or may not be differences between each console, fans should feel rest assured that whether you own a 360 or PS3, you'll experience all of the fantastic gameplay that WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 has to offer. General Info Q: I realize that your not yet ready to reveal the full roster but can you give us a rough percentage of NEW superstars vs Returning superstars and legends? A: Bryan Williams – We’ll be making more announcements about our roster soon, so stay tuned! Q: If you had all three systems and had to make a choice of picking one version of the game which one would you pick? A: Bryan Williams - I couldn't pick! That's like asking me to choose favorites between my own children. In all honesty, it's the game, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008, that is the star of the show. The console is simply the tool in which to play it on. Q: Computer AI has long been a difficult road to master with the series. Will this years addition of the different fighting styles finally allow the computer controlled characters to play like their real life counterparts? A: Bryan Williams - That's the plan. From the outset of pre-production, AI improvements were pegged as one of the highest priorities for this year's game. AI is always tricky but I feel that the current state of our AI is miles ahead of where we were last year when we shipped. credit - Mike Regan, GamingRing.com |

No questions about Custom Soundtracks... The only real knowledge we got was the nice little fire system they got (for Hardcore Style I assume). Making the Wii version play strictly with the wand and nunchuck is a mistake. I understand the logic but the better Wii games offer options of control including Classic Controler and GCN Controller. It wouldn't kill them.

I really wish they'd adapt the DOR Hell in a Cell ceiling engine, the one where all the panels could be destroyed, for SvR. I hate the "obvious middle panel" thing.
Hell, even make it random where only one random one could be broken per match. |
