For Vito, from deadspin:
So I'm settling into my seat on a VERY inexpensive Jetblue flight to Chicago to see the Mets in Wrigley when I notice the flight attendant having a hard time closing the overhead compartment because of someone's bag. After she sheepishly looks around for the culprit—he identifies himself. Since everyone was already seated and ready to fly, the apparently inconsiderate passenger was on stage for all to see. It was none other than Omar Minaya himself. What I didn't say before is that this flight is CRAWLING with Mets fans making the pligramage to Wrigely. At once the plane is abuzz. One young man in 18A shouts out "I woulda traded frenchy three months ago" another says "Better live it up, this is probably your last flight to chicago as GM". Delighted by the impromptu celebrity roast I chimed in with "I bet they flew Mike Jacobs in business class, at least". We all laughed in unison—he sat down and put his headphones on, a defeated man. Can't believe that Adam LaRoche owns the record for RBI in a season by a D'Backs first baseman with 89.

Zambrano is dealing again. I dont know what has gotten into this guy, but before todays game, in the last 5 starts, he's had 1.90 era, 3 wins. He's quietly been one of the best pitchers in baseball since he's returned to the rotation.

![]() Battle of the Sox ends in a sweep of the double-header by the White Sox. Red Sox haven't been swept in a double header in years but the pitching was decent today. The offense and hitting was almost non-existent in both games. NESN had the stat of last time Red Sox hit this bad in a double-header was in 1976. They defiantly "gave up" on the season after loosing 2 of 3 to the Rays earlier in the week. |

They didn't just give up and start throwing games or lack of trying to win games but based on how Tito's post-game press conferences have been, the team is starting to lose the mental focus on winning.
In one week, the Red Sox went from 4.5 games back of the Rays and Yankees to 8 games back of the Yankees and 7.5 games back of the Rays. They only have 9 games left against either team (3 for Rays, 6 for Yankees) to make up any real ground since the couple of weeks before, the Red Sox would lose or win same time both teams lost or won and couldn't make up any ground. |

Bautista's season reminds me so much of Luis Gonzalez's 57 Home Run campaign of 2001...
...both are ridiculous. Talk to me about Ryan Howard or Albert Pujols hitting 40 Home Runs... ...DON'T talk to me about Jose Bautista hitting 40. I'm not buying it. We'll know next season for sure if something was going on this year, or he just really became good overnight. |

That post was from when Bautista got ejected/Ked by JOBA on a ball a foot outside. I negatively rated you because I hate you. Terrible attitude to assume he is juicing just because
Bautista has "credited" his improvement to a complete overhaul of his swing + naturally taking a more aggressive attitude. Supposedly this all started later in the season last year and his numbers in September last season were also pretty off the charts. I dunno new swing/new hitting coach + more aggressive attitude in nature + the YOUR Hero "career year" theory Nah you are prob right. He is a worthless juicing scumbag until he proves to me he can hit 40+ home runs every year for the next 5 years. |

...You can work on your swing, you can work on everything u want, but u don't go from 16 to 40+ Home Runs overnight. It's a work in progress.
OF COURSE he's going to credit his great season to working on his swing. What, u think he's gonna say "Man, Human Growth Hormone (or whatever other Performance Enhancer) really helps me!"? But we'll see next season. |

That is dumb. Let's say he does hit 40 home runs for the next 4 or 5 years. What is going to stop people like you from saying "Oh yeah well everyone knows he started juicing in 2010"
And if he goes back to 15-20 home runs a year, it will be "he just juiced for that season like Brady Anderson hahahaha" Terrible attitude to assume he is juicing. In cooler news I have tickets in the right field home run seats for Tuesdays game. AKA Cookie Crisp's 20th win. |

All I'm saying is let's see how he does next season. I'm not even talking about 4 or 5 years. Just NEXT season. That's it.
A year from now, let's have this discussion. If he has 35+ Home Runs, I probably was wrong. No big deal. |

At what point does Papelbon get traded? How good is Daniel Bard? I mean 50 pitches from Papelbon? That is terrible.

The owner also wants to trim payroll by about $10 million to lower the luxury tax the team pays and be at their more comfortable $130 - $140 million range for future signings. It can be done without getting rid of Papelbon since Mike Lowell and a few bullpen players probably are gone and easily save $10 - $20 million overall. Only issue Bard has still is the tendency to give up a bad home run in critical situations. Unlike Paps, Bard still uses a set of different pitches so no issue of him tossing a fastball 99% of the time. |

They should be able to get something good from both players since before this season started Texas was willing to trade a catcher for Lowell. Most clubs are lacking in terms of a quality closer so Red Sox would be able to get something of equal value from Papelbon.
The only issues for Papelbon is the starting value of $9.35 that will go up since his stats are in the top 5 for the AL/MLB which makes him a big winner in future arbitration and the lack of pitches beyond overpowering the fastball. |

Lowell is retiring after this season. He has a bad hip and can barely leg out a double off a line drive to the green monster. If he continues to play he'll only be a DH, and probably would platoon on another team.

So, The Yankees were on an 8 game winning streak since AROD got hurt and was out of the starting line-up...
...Today, AROD came back...and the winning streak ended. |

And A-Rod is to blame for Hughes throwing a 90 straight fastball down the middle, or hanging a curve in the 1st?

Aaron Hill and Adam Lind had breakout seasons last year and this year have swung at a lot of bad pitches. There numbers are not anything like last year. I guess they were on the juice last year, but not this year.

Hope the Rockies don't flip on the late season surge switch until after this series with the Reds.
Also hope noted gay rights advocate Carlos Gonzalez doesn't improve his stupid home/road splits. Some people prefer their MVPs to be able to hit in any ballpark (like international sex symbol Joe Votto). |

Rooting for Votto to be the MVP for obvious reasons. I think he'll get it if the batting avg. doesn't drop or have too much distance between himself and Gonzales (currently ahead) or Pujols(currently behind)
