Joe Torre to step down as Dodgers manager at the end of the season. Don Mattingly will take over for the 2011 campaign.

If the Cubs don't put Ryne Sandberg as their manager, and he ends up going elsewhere, and wins, it'll be another Cubs blunder.

The ONLY guy the Cubs should have as manager is Sandberg. The guy has paid his dues.

...the last couple years, Joe Torre hasn't shown any passion. Everytime a camera cuts to the Dodger dugout, Torre looks like he's just sitting there and letting things just...happen.

The guy who lit a fire under Torre was Don Zimmer, he was always there to coach him through things, to give him advice, to hurry Torre along. Once Zimmer left New York, Torre I don't think has been the same.

This article inspired a conversation between a fellow Twins fan and myself about whether or not Minnesota will re-sign Jim Thome, who his suitors will be, and how much he'll get next year.

It's quite the good read.

I'm guessing (completely arbitrarily, mind you) that we'll offer him about 6.5 for 1 year or 10 for 2 and not get the deal done because Tampa or some other team will offer him more money. I'm basing this on the fact that we have been paying Nick fucking Punto 4 mil a year for the last 2 years, and unless the Twins do the unthinkable and exercise their 5 mil option for punto next season, they'll have that money off the books.

What do you guys think will happen with Thome this offseason?

Since 1986, the Royals have lost the most games in MLB (16 more than the Pirates) and haven't been in the playoffs for the past 24 years. The 2nd worst team during those years managed to make it to the playoffs 3 times (the Pirates).

Interesting move considering Dotel wouldn't even be eligible for the playoffs if the Rockies make it. If he ends up playing a huge role in the playoff run that would be almost like getting a major player injured. Even if you get into some complex situation where the Rockies try to use the loophole that a guy on the 60-day DL can be replaced by anybody, the replacement still had to be in the organization by August 31st.

Still not as big of a head scratcher as a few years ago when the Red Sox traded for Mike Stanton like 2 days before the playoffs.

Furthermore, I don't know why so many people think Girardi will leave. Why would you want to leave a perenniel WS contender? And it's not like the Yanks are gonna dump him if they don't win the WS. Even if they get knocked out in the first round that won't be enough to warrant totally getting rid of the guy a year after a WS win.

Logically it makes no sense for him to leave since he's very good at working with young/inexperienced players but has some difficulty with veterans due to his tough style and workouts.

In Florida, the young players along with the fans and media loved him but the owner and veteran players disliked him. Mainly it was because of his confrontational style when given demands he think didn't help the team or interfered with his managing style.

The problem would be similar to why Randy Johnson and Joe Torre left the Yankees in the fact the media and crazier segment of the fanbase is too much to deal with year in and year out. Every big market team manager deals with this but in New York its magnified a lot more due to the huge sums of cash and tradition of every season must be worth a title or its a failure.
