I just don't want them to do that anymore though. It's another high contract. I'd rather get some young arms or guys who go out there and get the job done in the post season. I mean wtf, Paul Byrd? who would of thought.

Why wouldn't you go for Santana? I can see not wanting to go after older guys and unproven free agents (see: Carl Pavano, Kevin Brown, Jaret Wright, Kei Igawa), but Santana is arguably the best pitcher in baseball AND he's only 28. He also has postseason pitching expeirence. If we don't have to give up anyone key (Hughes, Chamberlain, Melky, etc.) then I'd say go for it. You might as well never target a starting pitcher via trade/free agency again if you won't go after a guy like Santana.

Well unless you plan on throwing a bunch of money at Carlos Silva or Freddy Garcia I don't think the Yankees have a lot of options outside the organization this coming offseason. Apparently there's another stud Japanese pitcher who wants to come over here and play but he's a forkballer with a history of arm injuries and I don't know if anybody wants to deal with that.

The only Japanese player coming over I've heard of is some outfielder named Fukidome or something.
Anyway...I really don't see the Yanks getting Santana because I have no doubt they'll want at least two of the Joba/Hughes/Kennedy triumvirate. Ditto for the Mets...I'd love Santana in Mets blue and orange but it'll cost one of Wright/Reyes and probably Beltran plus more |

Its not like Santana is an over the hill pitcher like Brown, Johnson, Clemens, etc... He's in his prime right now. I have no problem giving up prospects for Santana and paying him what he wants. Most contracts we got burned by were those older guys.

I think the Yankees would be fucking retarded to let Posada or Rivera go. It's not like they have any internal options that can replace either, nor are there any decent enough free agents who will provide the same value. They're Yankee-lifers and should be treated as such.
I can see them letting Abreu go, but I like what he does for the lineup. I honestly believe A-Rod will be back as well. Same goes for Petitte. I think Torre will be back and everyone will be back. That's how it should be. I really think this team deserves another shot. They should be brought back. The first half of the season was marred by injuries and uncertainty in both the rotation and bullpen. The young guys helped save our season and I think they deserve to have a go at it for a full season. We were the best second half team in baseball... imagine how we would have played if we had the same team first half. If we blow it next year then maybe it's time to think about restocking the team, but this isn't the year to do it. Our guys deserve one more shot, and it's also a terrible year to do it with a horrible free agent class. If this team crumbles, Steinbrenner should be prepared for a down year next year. |

Jon heyman of SI has listed odds for Torre's replacement if he in fact does not return to the team:
-Don Mattingly: 2-1 -Joe Girardi: 3-1 -Tony La Russa: 10-1 -Bobby Valentine: 15-1 -Larry Bowa: 25-1 -Tony Pena: 30-1 ------------------- Elsewhere the Tigers have announced they are gonna exercise Pudge's option. |

Yeah, there is no problem with the position players if they bring back their own free agents. Mainly Posada and A-Rod, Rivera as well obviously. They need to deal with the pitching, plain and simple. They need a top of the rotation starter and bullpen help.
If they can somehow get Santana for a Kennedy, Tabata, Horne, etc... package then that would be huge. I don't see it happening but I would be very happy with a rotation of Santana, Pettitte, Wang, Hughes and Joba next year. I still think the biggest mistake they are going to make this offseason is getting rid of Torre. From the way the post-game interviews and all that looked it seems he feels like he will be gone. And apparently LaRussa seems to be a top candidate, which is a pretty terrible choice all around. The other thing people are talking about is that Torre wanted to actually use Mussina that game yesterday but the upper brass wanted to use Wang. If Torre didn't make that decision then he was probably gone yesterday. |

Somewhere around mid-season. Yankees made a bit of history by signing a chinese pitcher and his catcher to minor league deals. Has anybody heard how they did down on the farms?
But my take on it is this. Steinbrenner may have "the power" right now. But the clubhouse is really holding all the cards right now. A good chuck of the team is going to the market, A-Rod can use the option, and someone on here mentioned that Derek Jeter may ask for a trade if Torre goes (which I kinda see happening). What if this happens? I'm with some of you guys right now. Keep Joe around for one more year. It's the last year for the stadium and you might as well make it his last. Keep the chunk of your team around and the man who took it on his back to get us this far. Offseasonwise. Bring back Pettitte. Wang needs a little fine tuning and he should be the monster he was all season. Keep an eye on Mussina. Clemens is probably done for good. Keep an ear to the ground on Johan Santana. But the odd ball for me I think is Kei Igawa. What do we do to a 50 million dollar investment that can either be really good or really bad? |

I don't think Jeter would ever ask to be traded. Doesn't make much sense for him at all. He knows Torre won't be here forever anyway.

Jeter will retire a Yankee. Anyone who suggest otherwise is crazy. Outside of NY he is a great shortstop. He is a god in NY. You will see Babe Ruth back on the Sox before you see Jeter elsewhere.

And for those wondering. Here's a list I dug up of the Yankees free agents after this season is done with.
from mlb4u.com
While on this site. They got some predictions on where the rest of the league might go. Some of them might blow your mind. Here's the link. http://www.mlb4u.com/topfa07.php |

Just looking over the site, some of their predictions seem really random. Is Eric Gagne really that high up on the free agent list? Also, Mike Lowell will be back with the Red Sox, the next best 3rd basemen they have is Kevin Youkilis and he is currently breaking records (like most chances without an error) over at first so I can't see them letting him go.

Good for him. If they really wanted to keep him, they would have giving him a deal before this season even began. Now they're fucked. Maybe they'll pick up Mussina's gigantic option and have him be there closer. |

Boras hinting that A-Rod's gonna be looking for a $40 mil a year deal.
What has the world come to?That being said, I'd love him on the Mets...A-Rod would generate more than $40 mil in revenues easily. Shame Coupon would never go for it. If they don't at least make an offer I'll be pissed. |

There have been some that have picked the Indians to win the World Series this year and are sticking to that. They have some good pitching and they can bring the bats. It's also significant that they made it tough on the yanks to close out an inning (how many hits/runs did they get with 2 outs with RISP again). Boston is not like the Yanks and won't be making similar mistakes, but no one should write the Indians off (and judging from how suddenly ESPN keeps saying that even though Boston owned Cleveland like NY did in the regular season, Cleveland got the job done when it counted). I think the ALCS is going to be really entertaining, and if anyone can beat the Bosox, it's the Tribe, and vice versa. I would still pick the Tribe in six, though. |

I really don't think Mo and Posada will be back unless of course Torre was there. From what I hear Mariano is very upset about Torre being replaced. I'm guessing the same with Posada. We need to find a way to get all 4 of them back. A-rod, Torre, Mo, Posada for 2008. I can really see Santana going to Boston for something like a Lester/Buchholz/Moss etc.etc. package. If that happens then the Yankees are pretty screwed. I say as long as we don't trade Joba or Hughes we try to work out a deal with Minnesota Even if we have to trade Melky we could always try to get Rowand in the offseason. |
