This is the New York Mets we're talking about, why keep a young prospect when you could trade him for an overpaid slugger past his prime?

Delgado must be pissed. When he left for Florida last year he did so because he liked the direction and chance the team had in being a contender. Perfect example of becoming too expensive for your team.

Tom Gordon
Yankees
Mets?
A pitch for Flash
Nov 20 - According to the New York Post, the Yankees remain adamentally opposed to offering Gordon a three-year contract, although several key players such as Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Mariano Rivera are eager to bring him back. The Yankees believe their current two-year offer is "very competitive," the Port reported. But Gordon's agent, Rick Thurman, said eight to 10 teams have told him they want Gordon as a closer and some were considering three-year deals.
GM Brian Cashman recently said he wasn't overly optimistic about being able to re-sign the veteran setup man.

Piniella says no
Nov 20 - Lou Piniella told new Dodgers GM Ned Colletti on Saturday that he wasn't interested in the Dodgers' managerial job, reported the Los Angeles Daily News. "He said if this was a year from now, he would be all over it," said Colletti, who spoke to Piniella for 15 minutes.
Colletti and other Dodgers officials met with Jim Fregosi and Terry Collins in the Tampa Bay area on Saturday. Fregosi is currently an Atlanta special assistant, and Collins is the Dodgers' player development director.

Why the hell would a team full of sluggers want Juan Pierre? Texas wouldn't utilize him to his abilities, so offering him in a deal to the rangers is fool-hardy. Of course I say this, so the Rangers will likely do it.

Since the Marlins are shedding payroll, I wonder if the Mets could swing a deal for Luis Castillo. He's a proven speedster who could possibly even overtake Jose Reyes for the leadoff spot (Jose would be miles better in the 2-hole, IMO)

they're going after Furcal. It wouldn't be wise to go after Castillo as well. Besides, I do believe Castillo is locked up for a year or more still.

Josh Beckett
Marlins
Red Sox?
Rangers?
Rangers-Marlins deal is close
Nov 21 - According to the Miami Herald, a deal is "on the table" in which Florida -- in an effort to shed payroll -- would send right-hander Josh Beckett and third baseman Mike Lowell to Texas for third baseman Hank Blalock and one of two pitching prospects, John Danks or Thomas Diamond. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram and the Boston Herald both report that the left-handed Danks, the Rangers' first-round pick in 2003, is the most likely to go in the deal. Sources say the deal is close. The Rangers, unwilling to part with either pitching prospect, are thought to be working with a third team for a pitcher who could be dealt to Florida to complete the trade. According to the Palm Beach Post, to avoid losing either Danks or Diamond, the Rangers could dangle first baseman Adrian Gonzalez as trade bait to a third team for pitchers to flip to Florida. The Post says the Rangers and Marlins also have discussed scenarios that include center fielder Juan Pierre in the deal.
If the trade with Texas falls apart, the Boston Herald has reported that the Marlins are considering a proposal to send Beckett and Lowell to Boston for shortstop Hanley Ramirez and a pitching prospect, either righty Anibal Sanchez or lefty Jon Lester. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that another club open to a Lowell-Beckett package is the Tigers, while the Angels, Dodgers, Yankees, Phillies, Pirates and Giants could enter the bidding as well.
The Marlins reportedly are trying to pare 25 percent of their payroll, and trading Lowell -- who is owed $18 million over the next two years -- is central to any deal. They would also like to free up money in order to lock up Dontrelle Willis to a new contract.

Carlos Delgado
Marlins
Orioles?
Mariners?
Mets?
Mets, O's after Delgado
Nov 21 - According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Mets may be beefing up their pursuit of Carlos Delgado now that Mike Cameron is off the payroll. The key to any deal, though, would be the Mets' top pitching prospect, right-hander Yusmiero Petit. The Marlins could also ask for right-hander Aaron Heilman, first baseman Mike Jacobs or infielder Chris Woodward as part of a deal for Delgado.
The Newark Star-Ledger reported that Mets GM Omar Minaya has spent a considerable amount of time talking to Florida about Delgado. Any team that would acquire Delgado would likely have to assume the rest of his contract. Delgado is due $13.5 million in 2006, $14.5M in 2007 and $16M in 2008. The Orioles are also suitors for Delgado, although they are undecided whether or not they want to part with a top pitching prospect such as left-hander Adam Loewen or right-hander Hayden Penn, according to the Palm Beach Post.

Johjima, M's agree on 3-year deal
Nov 21 - The Mariners have agreed to terms with Japanese catcher Kenji Johjima on a three-year, $16.5 million contract, and will make the signing official at a news conference Monday afternoon, a baseball source confirmed to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick. Johjima's contract can increase to $19 million if he reaches designated thresholds based on plate appearances, the source said.
Johjima, a star in Japan with the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks, was considered one of the top free-agent catchers on the market this winter along with Benji Molina and Ramon Hernandez.

Giles staying in S.D.?
Nov 21 - GM Kevin Towers believes Brian Giles may give the Padres a hometown discount, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. With the Yankees possibly willing to spending $30-plus million for Giles, the Padres will have to top their three-year, $25.5 million offer to retain the 34-year-old outfielder.

Bowden coming back
Nov 21 - In their search to replace GM Theo Epstein, the Red Sox over the weekend interviewed White Sox director of player development Dave Wilder and gave Jim Beattie a second look, The Boston Globe reports. Washington GM Jim Bowden reportedly will get his second interview on Monday.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pirates owner Kevin McClatchy said the Red Sox had yet to contact him seeking permission to talk to Pirates GM Dave Littlefield.
McClatchy was responding to a rumor that the Red Sox were interested in Littlefield, a New England native, and that Beattie would be Littlefield's assistant.

Someone tell me, is Josh Beckett really this good? or is there some hidden potential?

I don't like the sox giving up Handley for him, unless they have a deal for some good young guys for Manny.

Beckett Texas Ranger? Not yet
Nov 21 - Contrary to numerous reports, the Rangers aren't the leading contender to land Marlins starter Josh Beckett in a package deal with 3B Mike Lowell, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports. According to baseball officials who have been in contact with Florida, the Marlins have two other potential deals -- with Boston and an unnamed "mystery" team, possibly the Dodgers -- that team officials find more appealing than Texas' offer of 3B Hank Blalock and one of the Rangers' two top pitching prospects, either Thomas Diamond or John Danks.
The Red Sox, according to sources, have offered Florida highly coveted SS prospect Hanley Ramirez, who would become the immediate starter in Miami, plus a choice of two Grade A pitching prospects -- LHP Jon Lester or RHP Anibel Sanchez.

The talk here today was the Sox wouldn't give up Lester.

Although, the idea of Lowe & Renteria... could be the 2nd highest paid left side of the infield besides A-rod/Jeter... Of course, A-Rod & Jeter can actually play...

oh, Gammons is reporting it's Sanchez.

I can see Youklis playing first fulltime now too. Hanley is a great propect but Beckett is a great pitcher, plus Red Sox have plenty of other prospects coming up through the system.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/

^ This site is reporting the Wagner will accept a 4-year, $40 mil offer from the Mets today

Take that for what it's worth, I think it could be true though because mlbtraderumors was the first site that I saw reporting the Cameron/Nady deal....and that was several days before any other site announced it

That 4th year will more than likely be a waste of $10 mil on a 37-38 year old, but hopefully he won't regress to the point where he can't be used.

Hope it's true......Wagner

Beckett Boston bound
Nov 22 - The Red Sox and Marlins have come to a tentative agreement on a trade that would send RHP Josh Beckett third baseman 3B Mike Lowell to Boston for highly touted SS Hanley Ramirez, RHP Anibal Sanchez and a minor-league pitcher. The five-man deal is contingent on all players passing physicals. An official announcement is not expected for a day or two, which leaves open the possibility that it could still fall apart, sources outside the Red Sox organization have told ESPN's Peter Gammons.

Meet the Mets, get an offer
Nov 22 - The Mets are expected to pitch Billy Wagner a $30 million offer before his two-day New York-area visit ends Tuesday, the New York Daily News reports. In advance of Wagner's trip, the Mets shipped him a DVD with celebrities -- singer Tim McGraw, sportscaster Bob Costas, actor Kevin James and comedian Jerry Seinfeld -- touting New York City.
The Mets are in position to outbid the Phillies, and have hinted they're willing to guarantee a fourth season -- something the Phillies are unlikely to do.

Nov 22 - GM Kevin Towers believes Brian Giles may give the Padres a hometown discount, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. With the Yankees possibly willing to spending $30-plus million for Giles, the Padres will have to top their three-year, $25.5 million offer to retain the 34-year-old outfielder.
The Yankees are playing phone tag with Giles, the New York Post reports. Manager Joe Torre and former Yankees right fielder Paul O'Neill have been unable to reach Giles.

Is Graffanino offically leaving Boston though? I thought I would see him back in a Sox uniform next year.

How do you see Lowell effecting Damon?

3rd base v. Center Field?

The more I hear from Borus the more I think he's gone, but I don't know if anyone will give him what he's asking so he might be back.

Borus did a binder on Damon that he passed out. Some of the chapter titles were funny.

"Why johnny damon is better then rickey henderson".
"Why johnny damon is the most durable CF in the majors and deserves a 7yr deal"
"Johnny damon will have started the most games of any CF before his carrer is over"
"Johnny damon will get hit 3000hit in (I think he said 2009 or sumthin)"

just some funny stuff.

The sox feel the over payed a bit for Variteck (years/dollars) but what he means to the team/pitching it was worth it.

They wont over pay for Damon.

I didn't realise Lowell won a gold glove last year.

They said that 3days after the season this year, he drove somewhere to see his minor league hitting coach to work on his hitting. That during the season almost every game he had a different stance and even tried batting with one contact lens thinking it might help his seeing the ball somehow.

He turns it around, you have a good feilder, .275 hitter, capable of 20-30HR... That along with the pitching are big lifts for the sox.

If Damon does walk, they have to address the leadoff hitter position.

They say that it'll affect Damon since he has said publicly that one he would be more comfotable leaving if the Sox let their core guys leave which they seem to be doing now that they have replaced Mueller and Millar seems to be on his way out if they are gonna start Youklis at 1B

Actually, there is talk of Youklis being delt, I forgot the name, but someone had a young 1B they want to move, I don't remember who they were talking about on the radio.

Yeah, Damon said he would stay if the team stayed, but guess what, Damons going to do what's best for his wallet, plain and simple.

You really think if the Red Sox give him the best offer, he's going to go elsewhere because there are "new players"...

But as I've said, I wouldn't give him a 7yr deal.

4 years, maybe 5/6 options.

But, 7yr gauranteed, no way.

On a side note, this is around the same time the Sox got Schilling (theo had thanksgiving dinner at Schillings place in AZ).

It seems the Sox time their "big move" right when the season ticket renwal bills go out.

They also got Pedro around Thanksgiving. Simmons has an article on ESPN about the trade and notes all that stuff

Of course Damon is going to do whats best for his wallet, because the core of the team is gone. If they were keeping Millar and Mueller then chances are he wouldn't be going after the most unrealistic contract this side of Bryant Reeves

Nah, even before the moves he was set on this course, just look at who his agent is.

Remember, this is the same Josh Beckett that was the World Series MVP for the Marlins. You got more than a guy with hidden potential.
