Top and Bottom; Wrestlemania in retrospect

Rank the top 3 and bottom 3 Wrestlemania's. When I go back now and watch certain shows I am often surprised how my opinion changes from the live show at the time. Some things have aged better than others as well. If you want to rank in a different way go ahead...

Top 3 Wrestlemania's...

1. Wrestlemania 17

This is not a perfect show but it is overall and by far the best Wrestlemania. In my opinion the only thing making it imperfect is the weak choice turn of Austin at the end of the show. But even with that, it's still an amazing show and that turn doesn't affect the show so much as it did for leaving a shitty aftermath. But still, Rock/Austin II is increadible, TLC 2, McMahon/McMahon, Angle/Benoit, Triple H/Taker... there are more great matches on this card than any Wrestlemania. Plus the excitement of the first stadium show in nearly a decade is great. Plus it was at the most exciting point in WWE's existence.

2. Wrestlemania 19

Again a card that isn't perfect because things don't always pan out perfectly. But can you really grade this show low just for a botched spot in the main event? Angle/Lesnar, Rock/Austin, HHH/Booker T, Hogan/McMahon and Jericho/Michaels. I think this card sinks slightly below 17 but is very close.

3. Wrestlemania 8

Once hailed as the greatest Mania by the internet wrestling fans and seemingly long forgotten. Rewatch this show if you doubt my ranking. A great opening match with Shawn Michaels and Tito Santana, a dramatic Jake the Snake vs Undertaker, a really fun 8-man tag with a lot of charismatic superstars from childhood, red hot Piper/Hart, one of the greatest WWF Championship matches ever with Flair vs Savage and then there is the main event. Overall one of the most fun shows WWF did in the 90's with several really strong matches. Plus this was a return to the stadium and it was certainly welcome. Though looking back you can see it wasn't a jam packed house but still a great environment.

Bottom 3 Wrestlemania's...

1. Wrestlemania 11
Ironically I've probably seen this one the most. When I was a kid I this was the first Coliseum tape my parents ever gifted to me so I watched it 100 times. I enjoyed it then but it is a shit show with no redeemable qualities what so ever beyond the nostalgia I have for it being my first tape. Sure Diesel/HBK is a really good match but they ended up having a much better one the next year. And it also features the worst Undertaker match in Mania history, seriously at least the Gonzales match is memorable, and the worst Bret Hart match ever on a WWF PPV. The Razor/Jarrett match is fine but has a bullshit end. This PPV sucks.

2. Wrestlemania 2
What were they thinking? I really don't know who this show entertained. I remember being so confused by it when I finally got my hands on the tape. I don't know if there was a Coliseum release of this show or the first one but in the late 90's WWF Home Video released this show and it was incredibly disappointing. I've maybe rewatched it 5 times or so. It's kind of fun, but the lack of match quality makes it labor to watch.

3. Wrestlemania 15
What, were you expecting 9? Well fuck you, I can rewatch 9 every year of my life to see the fun Roman setup and first outdoor show in years. I really enjoy 9 even though there are no great matches on it. 15 is truly a one match show and I've never really thought it was close to Austin and Rock's best. It seemed some WWE revisionist at times have spun that this is an all time classic but it's not. It's just the end to one of the worst WWF PPV's of 1999. There are tons of bullshit finishes and horrible booking. One match shit show.

I disagree. I think you can see the beginning of all his genius in this match. Plus Tito comes off really solid. I think this match is a classic WWF style opener.

10 minutes of Tito working a headlock and a weird and seemingly rushed finish.

Oh heck yeah, I want to play!

Top 3 Wrestlemania's...

1. Wrestlemania 30
For me, none have come close. It is the perfect show. I've been watching wrestling since before I can remember, literally. The entire card worked. Not just best Mania, it's the best wrestling show I've ever watched.

2. Wrestlemania 19
Was my favorite Mania for 11 years. I mean what a card. There were 3 matches that could easily be considered match of the night. Then there is the real fun street fight with Hogan vs Vince. Just a great show.

3. Wrestlemania 5
This is the first Mania I actually was old enough to have memories of watching it live. Maybe that bumps it ahead a few spots, but it was a hell of a show. Seemingly every big star was on the card, and even all these years later, The Mega Powers main event is about as big as it gets in terms of star power.

Bottom 3 Wrestlemania's...

1. Wrestlemania 2
It's probably unfair going back this far since my only memories of this are ones made a few years after it happened, but that is true of 1, 3, and 4, all of which hold up far better to me. There is nothing that really stands out, and just feels like an encore more than a major even like 1 or 3.

2. Wrestlemania 25
Aside from the incredible HBK/Taker match, I really disliked this Mania. It felt like the whole show was booked to pander to non fans. Celebrating the babyfaces and good family fun. JBL was injured and couldn't do anything in his match with Rey. WWE hyped up a bunch of returning divas, then didn't even give them entrances, and let Santino win as a joke. At the time letting CM Punk win MITB again seemed really lazy (it led to an incredible heel run, but that is not the point). Jericho had a decent match with Steamboat, but Piper and Snuka couldn't do anything, then he got knocked out by Mickey Rooney of all people. I still can't understand how they decided HHH/Orton wasn't a no DQ considering the build. Just a dumb show.

3. Wrestlemania 11
This was just an underwhelming card. There is nothing really bad, but in terms of that big Wrestlemania feeling, it just wasn't there. The biggest thing I remember from this was that Yokozuna was Owen's surprise partner.

Bonus Round

Best Theme - Wrestlemania 21
The whole Goes Hollywood with the awesome parody videos, those were so cool.

Best Set - Wrestlemania 33
The huge ramp, the freaking Roller Coaster, they probably spent $5 million at least. Looked amazing.

Got to be honest, it's really hard for me to see WM in my head after 20. 20 was the first year I didn't even watch Mania live. I had just moved to NYC and was in school all busy and partying all the time. I had no time for wrestling. I was A FOOL. If I would have begged my parents I could've gotten money for a Mania 20 ticket maybe.

Ironically the other Mania that I didn't watch live was the next Mania in NYC. I didn't go or watch it live. I was busy at that point in my life too and tried to push Wrestling away, probably because I didn't have the money for a Mania ticket at that time either.

Then I also decided not to go to the last Mania in NYC.

I got Mania phobia.

Top Three

1. WrestleMania X-7

I sometimes try and quantify what makes this show so good. I mean, it seems really obvious to people, but are Jericho vs. Regal, Guerrero vs. Test, RTC vs. APA & Tazz, the Hardcore Triple Threat and Chyna vs. Ivory really things worth mentioning on one of the greatest cards of all-time? Yet they are. I dunno, this just feels like a show where the sum of all the parts is greater than all the parts, but then the good parts are all really good. Plus, the show just has a great vibe to it. Felt like it could explode into something else, because wrestling was cooling a bit.

2. WrestleMania X

Bret vs. Owen and Shawn vs. Razor. I have fond memories renting this on VHS as a kid and not really knowing anything about it and just loving how that show started and then just going on that wild wrestling ride. I only really check in for Bret vs. Owen and the Ladder Match now, but something about the show, and it being in MSG, just feels...right.

3. WrestleMania 21

Gotta throw this one in there. I fucking loved this show, and the trailers leading up to it, and Batista's turn. I liked the idea of Eddie and Rey having a match. Angle vs. Michaels had my purse wet. I was still enough of a mark for Ladder Matches that Money in the Bank was actually something I was really looking forward to. HATED JBL vs. Cena and everything about it, and could not have given a flying fuck about Akebono, but eh -- they still feel, in theory, like matches that had an appeal to someone somewhere.

WrestleMania XXX might have made my top three once upon a time, but it doesn't hold up to me just because of what jack and shit it means. The Shield dominated, but now Roman Reigns is actually my de facto favorite member. Cesaro had this awesome moment, but what the fuck has his career been? Daniel Bryan's rise to the top was a feel-good cap to a horrible push and something they tried to kill and now he's just a (very talented) guy.

Bottom three

3. WrestleMania 22

I fucking HATED this show. Worse than I should, probably. I HATED John Cena at the time, and I HATED Triple H. Great start. The Orton/Rey stuff made me sick. Not even because I was "offended" or anything like that -- it was just so fucking stupid and bad and rotten and why would you? And then it was a Triple Threat. Yuck. Edge vs. Foley just didn't interest me. Edge was in the wrong spot for me. Kane & Big Show as tag champs? Ugh. Opening the show? UGH! I did like Trish/Mickie, and thought that was the only match that felt like it was the right match with the right build. Vince vs. Shawn felt like a waste of Shawn, and if I remember correctly, Shawn wore black and grey for the match, and that is just how I feel about it -- grey.

2. WrestleMania XI

Kind of love this show as a guilty pleasure, honestly. This is Vince McMahon in all his flailing. Going back and watching it isn't fun, but it's like watching the most out of touch promoter just getting everything so wrong. I didn't see it live, but if I did, I imagine I would have been laughing hysterically the whole way through as my brother got his heart broken. Opening with The Blu Brothers, the DQ in the IC Title match, Taker/Bundy, The Smoking Gunns and Yokozuna, Bret Hart spending time with Bob Backlund, the babyface WWF Champion fending off that scary challenger in Shawn Michaels, BUT -- that's not even the main event. A football player I wouldn't have given a fuck about beating Bam Bam Bigelow, who I can appreciate is good, but have never really given a fuck about either. Holy shit, what a fucking train wreck. I love it.

1. WrestleMania IX

This is just the correct answer to the question. I had one of those moments growing up that tripped me out when I got stuck on the question: "Hang on, is that supposed to be Giant Gonzalez's shoot body or his gear?" I didn't phrase it like that in my mind, but I always thought it was obviously supposed to be his costume, but then realized that they may have actually tried to make that convincing. Did I miss something really obvious on commentary going back?
