Friend told me that Zachary Levi, Henry Cavill and Dwayne Johnson were essentially done and won't be a part of the DCEU. He also said that Joaquin Phoenix's Joker and Robert Pattinson's Batman won't be a part of the universe either. That confused me a bit since they're already doing a HBO limited series focusing on Colin Farrell's Penguin. What does that entail for John Cena's Peacemaker and the rest of the Suicide Squad

I always assumed they weren't part of any universe.

Peacemaker going to get a season 2.... eventually. After James Gunn is done Superman.

There's gonna be a "Waller" show first too.

No marvel movie has hit me in the feels as hard or in as many moments as this movie.

Also, 8.5 out of 10. My favorite mcu movie since endgame.

Ignoring Spider-Man, because im incapable of being objective about Spider-Man, it has the strongest emotional resonance as anything in the genre. Cap 2 is still probably my pick for the best MCU film (Cap2 is a top tier spy thriller even without the brand attachment,) but this is a fierce competitor on the merits of it as a standalone property.

I tend to evaluate the mcu films in regard to them as a serial since ultimately thats what they are but guardians 3 definitely stands as a very unique entry and will stand out from the pack long term i think.

As far as post endgame it doesnt have much competition. Spidey 3 and Doc Strange 2 being the only 2 films if you called them mid I'd give pushback on.

Cap 2 has always been the best written film, from an overall plot perspective, but the way Gunn has created such character development and chemistry across these three films is unmatched by any other mcu franchise.

Honestly probably not re-watching Guardians 1 or 2 anytime soon, like most Marvel movies, but I might actively seek out and re-watch Guardians 3.

Ended up rewatching X-Men: First Class. I remember really enjoying the movie when it first came out. "Days of Future Past" also has such great rewatchability. Especially that Quicksilver sequence.

Damn.

I should have said “Classic Anime” and gotten away with watching Akita finally.
Now I never will.

Remember that Matt Damon animated film from 2000 or thereabouts called Titan *Fonzie Noise* ?

That’s why animated films don’t grab me like live action do. I think around that time “The Mighty”stole the area where my love for animated films should be.

Yeah I love the shows when I say anime… Dorohedoro and One Punch Man are all-time. I just get nervous around the style of animation. That Studio Ghibli stuff looks like it came right out of my nightmares. The looking innocent but secretly terrifying aspect freaks me out.

Twenty five years ago my mates were raving about Akira and it was old then. I never got around to it. I suppose there are no more ways for me to ask people how good it is, they always say how good but I never care. I will watch it after I finish “The Mighty” yet again. As it happens I am watching The Mighty right now so it won’t be long.

FYI Kieran was always the best Culkin. It’s obvious now but it should have been in 1998.
It is an important film to me.

Anime is so tough to keep up with too. It takes so long to make and even then they rely on the source doing a new issue. OPM was a fresh take because ultimately it’s a statement about ennui so nothing ever really has to change.

Dorohedoro fucking owes me answers though!

Akira still holds up. Even though it's old, 80's and 90's animation hits different, and looks amazing in its own way. In fact as much as the best modern stuff impresses me, it will never look as good to me as the best of older decades.

Gangs of New York (2002) - 6/10

Over the years ive tried to watch this maybe a half a dozen times or so but the opening is so bad ive never managed to get through it. Ultimately i think this film is very uneven. Its acting ranges from excellent to laughable. Despite its scripts dialogue, theming, subtext and plot you have terrible cinematography and editing ruining what should be excellent scenes.

The opening action sequence is one of the worst edited and shot action scenes in a major motion picture made of its era or since. It peacocks itslef as if its giving you graphic bloody violence of the highest order but what its giving is not only fairly tame even compared to things Scorsese himself has given his audiences a dozen times over but it has some many hard jump cuts you could air on Monday night and think you're watching modern WWE.

Once that scene settles we jump in time and meet Leonardo DiCaprio's character who, like all the characters, is extremely well written and fairly interesting. This is the phase of Leo's career where he was just beginning to pull himself out of the teen heartthrob muck and try to mold himself into a serious A-list talent. And i respect his efforts here. His performance he would give today would improve this picture but he's not bad. What is bad is his accent. Sometimes Irish. Sometimes Boston. Sometimes its just Leo.

However jarring he is the trophy goes to Cameron Diaz who i truly hope was cast because she blew the casting director because otherwise whoever hired her to should be barred from whatever guild those cunts belong to. When she enters the film her lines are full ADR and not the good ADR that blends well with the sound caught the day of but instead that bad ADR where you can hear the empty room she's speaking in. I can only assume what she attempted to sell on set that day was such a mess there was no way they could use. And what a poor excuse for an irish accent she spewed out in the booth isnt exactly a winner either. And this is how we meet this character. Rough start. She isnt always terrible and sometimes she almost sounds authentic but, like a lot of the film, she's very uneven throughout the picture.

Now all that said its not like the acting is worth praise. That would be ridiculous because the acting is the best part of, again, this very uneven movie. John C Riley, Brenden Gleeson and (chiefly) Daniel Day-Lewis are exceptional. When any of these 3 are on screen you'll be captivated. They're great. Better than great.

As far as the story is concerned the late 2nd act to the credits really hooked me. First leg of the film i really struggled. I was really only holding on to Day-Lewis to get me to the finish line. Once the theme starting to expand and you could really see what the film is about, power on a societal level and the interplay of that against the backdrop of a budding democracy (and allegorically that subtextually juxtaposed against the political climate of the then present-day,) the film really finds its footing and manages to end with a voice thats trying to convey something if youre willing to unpack it all.

But there's the rub. You've gotta sit through at least an act and half begging the film to have not wasted your time. The actors, even the bad ones tbf, showed up. They're all doing their damndest to get something out of this material. Frankly though its a bit of a mess. When it's nailing it i liked it but after 6+ failed attempts to make it through this movie i can safely say I'll never watch it again and i think it's Scorsese's weakest film ive seen.

The first one is to this day, visually stunning despite the dated animation.

Bloodlust is just flat out gorgeous. That and Ninja Scroll are peak action anime.

Evil Dead Rise - 7/10

Was enjoyable, and seem to capture the charm of the Evil Dead Franchise, minus the charm of the franchise not being in it outside of a audio Easter egg.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 7.7/10

I haven't seen the most recent Ant Man or Black Panther films, so I can't judge where this movie stands with them, but it is definitely better than Thor 4 and Dr. Strange 2.

I'm generally burnt out with Marvel/Disney content, but I went to see it as the Guardians films have always been stronger entries in the MCU.
