WWE removes Heyman from creative, Bruce Pritchard to oversee all creative

Apparently WWE is dropping brand exclusive Creative teams and merging them back into a single group.

Paul Heyman got demoted back to on-screen talent while Bruce Prichard now is in charge of all of main creative.

Apparently Vince Russo might be back in a Creative role for Impact Wrestling based on current rumors.

Basis for the rumors is Impact being unwilling at all to discuss the rumor whenever asked and some of the company's recent direction and plans.

The source of the rumor claims Impact teasing signing a bunch of released wrestlers from WWE was Russo's idea even if some of them don't end up actually being signed like Drake Maverick.

I would rather watch a Vince Russo-written wrestling show than most wrestling on TV today. And that is not a compliment toward Russo.

Lol so I know some people who work for Impact and I just ran this by them. Never had a more emphatic "No" in my life.

Heyman arguable was a bigger bust in lead creative than Prichard has been when you consider the amount of times he's started and stopped plans and pushes for people he liked. Even his biggest storyline, the Lana-Rusev-Lashley infidelity & marriage angle, was a huge bust in terms of quality.

At least Prichard was more consistent with his role. He stunk when he first started taking over SD's creative and has stayed that way ever since then. Otis & Mandy storyline was probably the only really good thing to come out of Smackdown in recent months and that wasn't even his idea to begin with.

Supposedly so at least in regards to the ideas and plans that were known or speculated to have come from him.

To be fair a bit, a few things like the Lana-Rusev-Lashley story were hurt by issues beyond his control. The story was still terrible before that point but he didn't get a fair chance to finish it. Liv's lesbian angle that quickly went nowhere was supposedly his idea.

Things like the tag division getting more focus was Heyman's idea as well but his biggest problem was not having any real long term and quality plans for teams. Like his initial idea for the Street Profits was just to stick them on tv in skits to give them exposure but didn't have any real in-ring plans for them for the longest time.

Raw has sounded so fucking boring for weeks. Heyman had a thankless task of writing a three-hour show, but a lot of his "projects" haven't really hit it with Vince (Cedric, Ricochet, The Vikings, etc.). Plus those ratings are dropping way more than SmackDown, which actually has some stuff happening over there. Yeah, it's WWE, but on paper the development is there.

Prichard is probably the better choice, but it is going to be a splash of cold water to do three hours on Monday too.

Raw has been pretty bad for a long while now. But SmackDown has been meh as well so feels like a bit of a zero-sum outcome.

I used to be a Heyman mark but no longer. Hearing FTR on Cornette also enforced the idea I had that Heyman was washed up. He ain't what he used to be. I think I'd prefer Bruce's predictable and hokey version of WWE than Heyman's recent scattered and completely unfocused Raw.

Maybe the issue is they keep going back to the same guys? Most have said it’s a really tough job having to write for 3-5 hours of tv every week non-stop, yet they go back to Heyman, Pritchard, and (reportedly) even Russo. There’s only so many ideas and twists on ideas they can have.

It also depends on how much rope they’re given; I can’t believe that Heyman would start a Ricochet push to have it end the way it did (losing to Riddick Moss (remember him?)) or book the stuff with Ricochet/Alexander/Vink/Thorne for weeks on Raw only for them to slip on to Main Event? Or the stuff with Liv Morgan? Or...I could go on.

Or is someone else getting involved and making decisions from above?

It’s a thankless job and there is so many things that need to change about the WWE. It’s too polished, gentrified, sterile, long, exposed and a million other things. I don’t think Heyman is without talent, but there’s only so much you can do with that fucking show with those fucking parameters.

Yeah, anyone in that job is hamstrung. Not just by Vince but by the networks too.

Among the many issues facing the company creatively, we always talk about how it would be nice to let portions of the roster get a month or two off here and there to not only let them rest their bodies a bit but also to prevent their characters from going stale or them just working directionless matches. That little break gives them a creative recharge.

I always remember Cena in 2010 and Punk in 2011 both being examples of times when they booked angles designed to take a star off TV for a while to sell an angle only to have to bring them back pretty much immediately due to pressure from USA. Taking an otherwise healthy full-time star off of TV for any length of time just isn't going to fly with them.

The first thing I thought of when heard this news was

The second thing, "Yeah, Raw hasn't gotten any better with Paul running the show."

The third, Raw opens up on Monday with Brother Love in the ring saying "IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!" for about 15 minutes.

Can't blame Heyman solely for the issues. Yes, he's probably lost a step and not the same guy he was creatively even 10 years ago, but he also had to do the job while handcuffed by Vince, the corporate machine, USA, etc.

It will be interesting to see how many of the wrestlers Heyman has pushed for keep their spot now

Lashley
Apollo
Murphy
Theory
MVP
Andrade
Humberto
Lana
Liv

Drew is probably safe. Asuka and Zelina should be safe. Garza as well.

We've already seen what happened to Shayna, Bianca, Ricochet, Cedric, Vink and Thorne when Vince said "nah"

According to the Observer Newsletter, one reason for Heyman's firing was due to Vince feeling none of the new guys he was pushing was getting over as potential new stars.

I mean that’s the issue, right? You build someone/something for a few weeks and the guy in control goes “nah” move on.

Was the 3rd hour where Raw went “dark” a Heyman thing? I think it was when he took the reigns that Raw suddenly felt like it had an injection of energy/the pace picked up. Storylines seemed to crossover a bit more. I remember enjoying that for a couple of weeks.

Probably although the 24/7 title shenanigans and stuff might have preceded it in terms of giving the 3rd hour a different feel or boost to the show. Heyman might have taken that idea and gone in the more dark or edgy route when he took over as lead RAW creative around a month later.

I’ll be honest; in my head the 24/7 Title was introduced on the same episode they did the “dark” 3rd hour. Wasn’t there some confusion over whether the belt would only be defended in the 3rd hour?

Think so since that was the main reason for the belt's existence.

USA Network came up with a bunch of ideas to improve RAW and its third hour and that was the least worst idea on the entire list.

Heyman had a hand in creative prior to that point but the show didn't really start to feel like a Heyman show until he actually took over as RAW's lead guy. One of the very first things he did in charge was the Braun Strowman stage crashing spot at the start of a show.

So much this. I don't even think the guys should be gone from the company. They could still workthe houses and maybea dark match here and there. But being off tv for a few weeks or so to reset and recharge a character just makes sense.
