Don Muraco looked like he was about to have a stroke 2 minutes into his match at WM4

WCW once had Hogan burn a copy of the Observer's Newsletter live on air because they were upset at comments Meltzer made about Macho Man at the time. |

i don't know, me personally, i'd watch WM 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 over anything in the last 10 years. but i'm not really a fan of work rate as i am of the whole presentation. so seeing Savage vs Butch Reed actually does more for me then watching Daniel Bryan vs Miz or Seth Rollins or whatever

Wrestlemania 1 is pretty sweet when you watch the television leading up to the event. Even watching the Brawl to End it All and The War To Settle The Score before watching WM1 gives you a different perspective on it. I don't watch any WWF past 1986 anymore lol

The character work is still miles above anything today, and its still a blast to watch all the promos. Ed Leslie had one of the most amazing voices ever BTW.
Once the bell rings though, the spectacle of big roided out dudes only goes so far for me. Even as kid, I was a hulkamaniac but my absolute favorites were Mr Perfect and Bret Hart because "their moves were cooler". Had I been an adult during that era, I probably would have been a snobby NWA fan lol |

Yeah the cartooney roided up era doesn't hold up well at all. The in ring work takes a pretty big dive aside from the tag division in 1988. 1984-1985 is still may favourite era of the WWF.

There was also a really great angle during a feud between Greg Valentine and Ronny Garvin where Garvin lost a career match to Valentine. But instead of going away, Garvin got a job as special guest ring announcer for valentine's match and just ran valentine down, calling him fat and stuff lol. Valentine gets him fired so next week he's a guest interviewer and does the same thing. Week after that, guest commentator. Garvin was wrestling at the next ppv again so I assume Valentine relented on the career ending match wager so he'd stop getting embarrassed by Garvin. It was fucking brilliant. |

I like OSW Review because they regularly point out stuff that I had never really noticed before, like all the stupid faces that smash makes while ax is talking.
Or at a TNA event, the fan holding a "This is wrestling" sign during a stupid gimmick match with Christy Hemme rofl |

Deadspin article speculating that some of the "outrage" and piling on by WWE wrestlers/employees could have maybe been opportunistically coordinated "from above" since McMahon h8s Meltzer... and WWE wrestlers' social media accounts are pretty curated
like Charlotte was on ESPN taking shots at Meltzer (un-named) yesterday, which is weird https://deadspin.com/there-are-no-cl...low-1828409695 |

It's kind of sad that this all has to happen on the week we had the first woman commentate an episode of RAW Is WAR but I guess that's just the world we live in.

I love how much everyone sells for Meltzer. With all the shit the carnies talk, it just builds Dave's brand.

And given the fact that it's the entertainment business, I don't get why they're so rattled by a critic.

Probably because the entertainment industry has an abundance of paid critics who can actually hurt a brand in an attempt to justify their own existence.
Entertainment critics are the very definition of overpaid and superfluous. Anyone getting paid to talk about someone else's work is getting it too easy to act like Dave Meltzer does. He's the not the garnish, not the dish. He's the somellier in a restaurant that doesn't stock wine. I love a good critic but they lack practical value. |

That being said I wouldn't deny anyone their living if they are good enough at it. You don't single handedly drum up interest in your brand by being useless so any critic earning and creating discussion has to be worth their wage.
I am conflicted. |

Dave Meltzer probably has as much star power as any full-timer on the roster. If he came in for an angle or to do a match, it could be #2 or #3 at WrestleMania.

And they've done this to themselves. They wanted to throw out realism and kayfabe and then get upset when attempts to manipulate emotions en masse are rejected.
