What did you guys think of Mick Foley's Hell in a Cell special?
I watched it and I enjoyed it for what it was. We've heard all the stories surrounding it, so there wasn't anything groundbreaking, but you can tell he's spent time honing his "one man show" skills. He did a great job contextualizing and was able to conjure some visceral imagery, so on that end I was pretty satisfied.

On the other hand I do have critiques. Mick is clearly very image conscious, and when he suddenly referenced the girl who wrestled Daphne after surviving cancer after being told she wouldn't survive long (I think it was cancer... could be mistaken) and started crying... I felt like he was working and he laid it on a little too thick. Even the bridge into that story - the way he started "crying" on a dime about how the match "touched" people - came across as very contrived. Maybe I'm wrong and it was genuine... but even as far as a performance goes, he didn't execute the way I would have wanted him to, regardless of whether or not he was "putting it on".

The "F bomb" bit was clever but got a little tiresome... I do appreciate the thought and artistry behind it but Mick seemed like he was a little too impressed with himself for building up to his one allotted utterance of the word "fuck".

Lastly, wrestling fans suck. I just found the audience to be so dweeby and such marks for their own "wrestling knowledge". Whenever he would mention a "deep dive" wrestling fact, you could see the smugness on some fans faces. Plus, the hammy chants would just take me right out of it.

It seems like I'm being harsh, but I'd say Mick is a skilled enough performer (and writer) to be put under scrutiny. I'd give it a B+ because I really did enjoy the trip down memory lane, and truly got a kick out of the Cactus Jack stories.

in person it was super good, the Network special version was okay with a couple small differences. Still a good show, just trumped up for being the exact anniversary in the exact place.

I thought it was kind of pointless to do either a documentary or this one man show about it, given that it's not like anyone has forgotten or overlooked it. I appreciate they wanted a deep dive into Foley's current day perspective, and for the most part he did a decent job, but it was kind of superfluous. But hey, I still watched it.
