Diesel had been made to look dominant. Diesel rolling over Bret would have hurt Bret WAY more than it hurt Backlund.

You know... just looking at chronology, I guess Survivor Series 1994 was the latest VHS that I had as a kid. I missed all of Deisel's run at the top.

Was probably while he was on the top that I was getting really into watching and rewatching the VHS tapes I had.... and then Mankind/Taker at Summerslam 1996 got me into watching live stuff.

Diesel's win kicked off a lengthy run of consecutive babyface Champions. Diesel didn't start his turn until after losing the belt to Bret. Bret lost to a babyface Shawn. Shawn lost to a babyface Sid. Sid lost the belt back to a babyface Shawn. Shawn lost his smile and the belt went to Bret, who was in the middle of a heel turn, but wouldn't go full heel for another month. Bret lost the belt to still Babyface Sid, who lost to a babyface Undertaker. Then, at Summerslam 97, heel Bret finally ended the run. Who lost it to a heel Shawn Michaels.

Just a weird 2.5 to 3 years.

So I was bored. I listened to the Observer radio thing on YouTube about Samoa Joe and MJF, curious to see if it got defended or not. It cuts to Dave’s visual during it. Holy shit. I could not believe it. Anyone who thinks the dude isn’t going through a mid-life crisis needs to check it out.

It’s actually insane. Can someone submit it to Cornette. It needs attention.

Despite having faced each other one-on-one around a hundred times, poor Randy Savage just could not get a break against Hulk Hogan.

In 1985, Savage signed with the World Wrestling Federation. He got a substantial push right out of the gate and started to be groomed as a top heel. Yet despite plowing through the undercard wrestlers as he was built up, Savage ran face-first into WWF Champion Hulk Hogan. Setting the tone for the entire rest of their careers, Savage repeatedly challenged Hogan for the title, but the Hulkster won all of their initial encounters by pinfall. Later in the year and into 1986 somebody realized that Savage needed to pick up some kind of victories, so the two began to trade wins. Hogan's wins were all by pinfall and Savage's wins were all by count-out.

In early 1986 Savage defeated Tito Santana to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship for the first and only time, holding it for over a year until Wrestlemania III. One would assume that this would mean a parting of the ways between the two champions, allowing them to go about their own business of defending the titles; unfortunately for Savage, he continued to lose to Hogan by pinfall on house shows and in dark matches through all of 1986, in 1987 in the lead up to a defense against Ricky Steamboat at Wrestlemania, and then continuing after his title loss for most of the rest of 1987.

Then in late 1987 an amazing thing happened, as the two biggest stars of the World Wrestling Federation - the seemingly-invincible Hulk Hogan and the man he'd been beating like a rented mule for two years in Randy Savage - joined forces to become the Mega Powers! Gone were the days of Hogan pinning Savage day in and day out, which paid off just a few months later as Savage won a tournament at 1988's Wrestlemania IV to finally become the WWF Champion, where all it took was facing an opponent other than Hogan.

Yet storm clouds were on the horizon, as the Mega Powers broke up in early 1989 after Hogan began to get entirely too chummy toward Savage's girlfriend Miss Elizabeth, endangered Elizabeth by demanding that she accompany him to the ring for his matches, eliminated Savage during the Royal Rumble, and abandoned Savage during a match to be beaten down by the Twin Towers. What a jerk. Obviously this boiled over into a feud and the Mega Powers exploded! at Wrestlemania V where Hogan won the WWF Championship by pinfall. Savage got a measure of revenge in the ensuing months, beating Hogan in half of their matches - by count out - though Savage predictably lost the other half by pinfall. This pattern continued all through 1989 and into 1990. Their rivalry in WWF ended in 1990 at The Main Event III, with Hogan yet again defeating Savage, this time in a steel cage match just to break up the monotony.

Savage and Hogan both separately made their way to World Championship Wrestling eventually, teaming together when they crossed paths again, until Hogan betrayed Savage to form the NWO. What a jerk. With Hogan now a heel and Savage a babyface, it was clearly time for The Macho Man to gain vengeance! Only he lost some more, instead. Savage challenged for now-Hollywood Hogan's WCW Championship at Halloween Havoc 1996 (Savage was pinned), Hogan challenged for Savage's WCW Championship on WCW NITRO episode 136 (Savage was pinned), and Hogan challenged for Savage's WCW Championship on WCW NITRO 199 (Savage was pinned). There were only three other singles matches between the pair in WCW, where Savage won against Hogan twice by disqualification and there was one no-contest, but at least Randy Savage was spared the humiliation of dozens of successive losses on house show tours. After WCW folded Hogan went back to what would shortly thereafter become WWE, while Savage poked his head into the upstart NWA-TNA briefly before retiring. They never faced each other again and Savage ended his career without ever having gotten a real win over his rival.

So there you have it. People talk about Hulk Hogan's backstage politicking, but there's really no better illustration than the fact that across fifteen years, two companies, and roughly a hundred singles matches, the one star that was equal to Hogan's fame in the wrestling business was never once allowed to pin him one-on-one.

(What a jerk.)

Hard to say whether it was to Piper's betterment to never really job to Hogan (even in the instance where he jobbed, he won first lol).

If he did job, would he have just been another villain of the week and not carried the momentum?

Then, there's the argument that almost every one of his damned programs had a fuck finish. He just stayed on cruise control, never really moving up the card.

I guess he wasn't going to be the top guy with Hogan there, so the holding pattern of "I'm a massive star but stuck in the midcard" was the best option.

Yeah, that Starrcade '96 match was all kinds of terrible, made even more frustrating by it not even a title match.

Here's the Cage Match article on it:

https://www.cagematch.net/?id=1&nr=32698

I believe it was pinfall, Cagematch usually will only say the method of defeat if it's not pin.

In pure wrestling shit housery terms I'm kinda excited for Schrodingers Okada right now. Hes both amazing and shit and which one he will be longterm depends on whether he signs for the company you Stan for.

Him signing back with NJPW feels like the funniest outcome for me.

Apparently Ken Shamrock is back in the WWE fold? They’re selling merchandise for him or something. He’s a pretty obvious HOF pick post-TKO merger.

Wonder if Ken Shamrock would "snap" during a HoF acceptance speech. Most certainly he would start "bleeding internally".

I never understood what happened with Shamrock and WWE. There has never been anything about a big blow up or double cross. It is not like Shamrock left for WCW either. He was just gone and never brought back at all.

I know he left to train for some MMA at one point. His Wikipedia seems to reflect that. I know this was the case with D’Lo Brown, but did Shamrock get busted talking to WCW or something? I have vague memories of there being some sort of backstage politics factor involved. Plus he was always a Bret/Rock guy.

Shamrock and his brother are on the outs with UFC, never mentioned. He deserves his shine though he's a good guy.

This is correct. Ken pissed off Dana a few years ago and Dana publicly went after him for money he owes him.

Then again, Dana hated Tito Ortiz at one point and still inducted him into the HOF.

I think Shamrock going into the WWE HOF would be more Triple H doing business without needing Vince's approval.

Really hoping the Rock return doesn't mean Cody doesn't get too "finish the story" at Wrestlemania now.

Anything but dethroning Reigns kind of feels like a consolation prize.

Priest cashes in on The Rock.

Achieves:

- Roman being defeated
- The Rock not being able to stick around
- "fuckery" that will allow Reigns to get right back in the mix
- Gives Priest a brag about how he beat The Rock at WM for the title

If they are gonna have multi-day rasslemania, they should make WM day 1 a "tournament" to see who faces Reigns on day 2.

Involve all of his biggest rivals who have been "screwed" and have legit "gripes" with him/Bloodline.

Cody Rhodes
Sami Zayn
Jey Uso
Kevin Owens
LA Knight
Drew McIntyre
Randy Orton

I guess one more guy needed. AJ Styles I guess.

I'd have Sami win, it would be a great way to get him back any semblance of the heat he had last year when he should have won the RR and beat Reigns.
