I haven't either the last 2 years, but pre pandemic those were fun shows. Ill probably check this out tomorrow before the football games, see if they can pick that momentum back up.

nwa is the only product that looks like wrestling to me. lot of talent is rough around the edges but it has the feel of sport and the conflict is grounded in what feels like human beings who wrestle for money. its a really simple thing that i used to get from puro but over the years that well has dried.

nwa is never going to be much more than it is now but i like the spirit of the product.

Trevor Murdoch is really fucking good. I didn’t appreciate him as much as I should have when he was in WWE at the time, but when he showed up in the NWA I was stoked for him. Last I saw he was just trying to earn a spot. Then I stopped following and he ends up champ. I’m glad they picked up on what I did.

Way “better” than most people associating him with WWE stank would believe. He was young as fuck doing that stuff too. I’m pretty sure he was <30. And it’s not like he was bad then, at all. And they kind of did use him for some big stuff. He’s probably a bit of a hidden gem.

Yeah, I’ll check it out. I really want to like them, but it’s just been hard to keep up. I think New Japan of America and/or NWA are the products for me right now.

I watched what I believe is the latest episode of NWA Power. Well, it was the top one that came up. Here are my thoughts:

* Nick Aldis cutting a promo expressing support for the babyface in the main event and addressing his personal issues with the heel. Real novel idea to do something so simple that makes so much sense.

* I don’t hate Velvet Sky on commentary, lol. She’s not brilliant, but she’s got personality and everyone is trying so hard to do their jobs right.

* Fandango and JTG. Yes. I am in. JTG is only 37. He’s younger than Kenny Omega. So is Harry Smith, who is teaming up with Doug fucking Williams, who is not younger than Kenny Omega.

* Fandango so fucking great. Really surprised some of these dudes haven’t ended up back in WWE.

* Velvet’s gimmick here is that she really wants to fuck Fandango. I hope Johnny Curtis works himself into a shoot there.

* The heels win (Smith and Williams). I think they might split up Fandango and JTG, which is fine.

* Kilynn King vs. Natalia Markova or something like that. Kilynn is this staunchy redhead that people seem to like but tries way too hard to get people into what she’s doing. Natalia has this gimmick where she’s arrogant and flexible. She’s hot, but the glimpses of her face make me think she’s older than she looks. These girls busted their ass. If Marakova is new, she’s got a lot of potential.

* Austin Idol is apparently someone’s father. I couldn’t hear the promo that great. I can’t remember if it was Tyrus or a guy Tyrus doesn’t like. So silly, lol.

* There was a six-man tag putting Colby Corino and these two giant fixers he has (one is Jay Bradley who has been around forever). He reminds me of heel Spike Dudley. They went against Jim Mitchell’s group, which has a gimp in it. The gimmick is that the gimp is really submissive outside the ring, but sadistic inside it. If this was anyone other than Mitchell yelling “Get the gimp!” it probably wouldn’t work.

* Aron Stevens did this interview segment where he’s wearing this hideous makeup and being melodramatic about Trevor Murdoch beating him up. I wanted to hate it, but somehow Stevens pulls all this shit off.

* There was an awkward La Rebellion or whatever they’re called promo. It was fine when the guy got going (don’t know if it’s Bestia 666 or Mecha Wolf), but he made a sexual comment to the interviewer who tried to play it off and it just went on forever. When Kyle Davis says “let’s take a break” at the end of it I laughed though. He’s good.

* They showed clips from this show called NWA USA which I didn’t know existed. Now I do. Good shit.

* The Pope is in the main event against Matt Cardona for the World Title. Great touch having the referee talk to them before the match. Hard to do a big fight feel in a studio. Imagine what the NWA could do with a larger budget.

* Tim Storm not allowed to be here for commentary because Cardona’s an asshole. Great, simple shit.

* Haven’t watched Elijah Burke in years. He looked fine here. Good even. Cardona is better doing this than Zack Ryder. But the match was structured well. I’m surprised Burke has never been given another chance with WWE either.

Overall: Really good show with some crazy shit that seems desperate to be “weird wrestling” for attention. But nothing I hated. Some stuff that just works that the other companies don’t do. Wish they could get a better deal and get in front of more people. The star of the show, for me, was probably Elijah Burke, which is good since he was in the main event. Watched the latest episode of NWA USA. It’s shorter than Power. Goes by like a breeze.

* The Fixers are a guilty pleasure. Just big fucking dorks who think they’re the best. Was kind of funny.

* Lol, there’s this guy who does a magician gimmick named Jake Dumas. He’s like a cross between Abyss and Penn Jillette. I want to say that he’s awful, but there’s some awkward charm to this. He uses a chain he procures from his hat after misdirecting the referee, then he sleeves it so he can’t get disqualified.

* After the match, Jake Dumas predicts there’s a card in Kyle Davis’ pocket. He then takes the card and uses it to cut under his opponent’s eye. It’s fucking great. By the way, the other guy, Eric Jackson was like a clean-cut amateur wrestler type and looked really good.

* Ricky Morton’s son, Kerry, is in the NWA. He radiates a good babyface energy. He’s feuding with Colby Corino. Simple stuff. Works for me.

* Ariya Daivari cut a good promo calling out Nick Aldis. Daivari so good at being the snivelling younger sibling with a chip on his shoulder.

* Nick Aldis…what a star, man. The air changes when he is out there. He’s big time. He and Daivari had a really good match that made sense given the physical difference between them. Aldis is a bit cheeky with this disrespectful young kid. Doesn’t fall for his original chicanery, but eventually makes a mistake and gets his leg worked over. Aldis can work with anyone on the planet, I bet. Just a great main event.

Overall, I really enjoyed NWA USA. I will definitely check it out next week and might make Sunday mornings my NWA block before I have my morning coffee or something.

I looked up May Valentine, the woman who does a lot of the backstage interviews. It turns out she’s a published author and done what appears to be totally legitimate work.

I was thinking about Nick Aldis going to WWE the other day. There was rumour that he was “blacklisted” due to his relationship with Mickie James and her prior relationship with Cena, but with Cena gone (and surely not caring about that in the slightest) and Mickie herself having been rehired, fired, and invited back for a guest Rumble spot in the last few years, I’m surprised it hasn’t happened. That said, by no means do WWE need him.

Guess I was thinking about who they have from a UK POV with the upcoming show, albeit that’s in Wales and I don’t think they have anybody on the main roster who’s welsh. Maybe time to bring back Mason Ryan?

The seasoning is not doing him any harm. I haven’t seen him work yet, but I bet Ricky trained him well. He’ll be getting his reps in there and then whatever happens, happens. Something about his look right now doesn’t suit NXT in my mind, for whatever reason.

Nick Aldis never going to the WWE baffles me a bit too, but I guess the timing wasn’t right way back when, and now he’s so comfortable and important there it just doesn’t work out as a move. He’s a big fish in a small pond there.

I’m back watching the NWA. Sunday morning in Australia. Lovely rainy day. Warming up with my coffee. Let’s do this:

* This is a Velvet After Dark edition of PowerrrSurge. I thought PowerrrSurge would be their big shows? I don’t know. Velvet is an attractive woman, but she overdoes it here. Basically talks about how hot she is while touching herself and dragging out interviews in bad lighting. She could have done more with a suggestive look at the right time. It did lead to one funny Dango line and Austin Idol being an angry grandpa though.

* Cyon is the guy that Austin Idol is claiming is his son. He’s the most generic looking masked wrestler I’ve ever seen, but he’s not bad. He beats a former US army guy named Garrisaon Creed who has a good look and also isn’t bad. The match is basically nothing though.

* There’s a women’s match between Paolo someone (I can’t be bothered to go back and check) and someone named Tootie Lynn. They tried hard and some spots worked. I liked that Paola’s established moves (within the context of this match) were scouted and countered. It’s simple and it seems so obvious, but you don’t see it as often as you should.

* Aron Stevens, complete with irritating makeup, had a guy named KC Rocker as an assistant as he applied holds and treated him like shit. It was OTT and weird, but good heel work from Stevens. He knows what he is doing out there. His stuff has layers. I’m pretty sure the gimmick is that he is haunted by his WWE career. So he copies his opponent when he’s hurt them like he’s their “stunt double.”

* The Rude Dudes vs. Idolmania Sports Management. I did not care about this at all. Rude Dudes have a good color scheme, but they haven’t filled the gimmick yet. They basically love being heels. I think. They are obnoxious and waste time. That sort of thing. Idol’s guys were faces in this. I suspected they were supposed to be heels, but whatever. They can work, this just had no oomph.

I’ll watch the next one, but this didn’t blow my socks off.

PowerTrip is apparently their bigger shows. I guess these PowerSurge episodes are to give the talent personality themed episodes, maybe even get them some experience in different areas?

* The Fixers are hosting this one. They’re an endearing tag team. They’re bigger dunderheads and that’s about the extent of it. I liked the credits at the end.

* Alex Taylor and VSK has a pretty good match. Smaller guys for the Jr. Heavyweight Division. Taylor looks a bit like Jack Black in the face/head area.

* Angelina Love squashed some woman named Riley Rocket. It was fine. One of the good things about the NWA is when you see someone you know. On this show, Angelina Love was that person.

* Garrisaon Creed wrestled Rush Freeman, who is a big dude. This was pretty good. I could see WWE being interested in both men.

Agreed.

Both shows had the problem of making sex seem like this alien thing. The Fixers did that bit with rats. It just makes me feel like “sex” is supposed to be taboo. I like that the NWA features women who have a “fuck me” quality. They generally use sex better when they’re not hammering it home. But it’s just cheesy and alienating when they have Velvet touching herself talking about how hot sex is and The Fixers confused by it.

Sex shouldn’t be the punchline to a joke. Let the sexy folk be sexy as an undercurrent.
