World Cup 2010
South Africa Well its all coming up soon, few weeks time the domestic leagues will end and the media will go into overdrive hyping it up beyond belief. Right now I'm simply hoping Henry either doesn't get to a play a single minute of it due to injury or instead spectacularly injures himself scoring an own goal to knock France out. NEVER FORGET. Would love to see Messi drag Argentina to glory regardless of Maradona not really having a clue what hes doing. Rooney to cave under the expectations of a nation would be quite comical. Spain look the team to beat with most groups looking like they should be on paper achievable for the favourites. Ivory Coast to pull off something of an upset and send the Portuguese home in the home group stages for my first shock of the tournament. Code:
Group A Group B Group C Group D France Argentina Algeria Australia Mexico Greece England Germany South Africa Nigeria USA Ghana Uraguay South Korea Slovenia Serbia Group E Group F Group G Group H Cameroon Italy Brazil Chile Denmark New Zealand Ivory Coast Honduras Japan Paraguay North Korea Spain Netherlands Slovakia Portugal Switzerland SPOILER: show Anyway the coding for that thing has taken me ages as I'm a little stupid so this better get some use. If I was a gambling man and I most certainly am despite what I've said above I think I'll be having a few quid on Portugal with 33/1 on offer for themselves. Love staking loads of little bets on the world cup, might have a bit of Tevez 50/1 top scorer each way also. Last edited by Ogen; 04-13-2010 at 12:50 PM. |

What price are England over in Ireland/anywhere else?
Here they're 5/1 (or thereabouts) which is very short considering teams like Italy are around 12/1, and we're pretty shit. |

Drogba could be a good shout for top scorer since he's in imperious form and he could easily get about 4 or 5 goals against North Korea alone.

Could be, but I think Torres will get it, unless he gets injured AGAIN. Spain's group is relatively 'easy', if he's fit he could get 4 or 5, maybe more from the group stage alone.

David Villa tends to score more for Spain than Torres.

I'd love USA to beat England, you know the English would never hear the end of it It won't be we saved your ass in World War 2 anymore, it'll be we kicked your ass in South Africa for the next few decades.

Prices don't change based on country, if they did bookies would get utterly hammered by people exploiting it. Best you can get on England at the moment is 6/1.

We've been embarrassed by the US before, back when it was MUCH more unlikely, so it wouldn't be that big of a deal. |

Unless football/sports prices don't vary? If that's the case I'm sure you'd find someone on BetFair who'd be offering much more than 6/1 for an England win. |

Hoping to see something special from the U.S. Not expecting them to win the whole thing, but I am expecting them to go far. They've got an excellent squad this time around.

If England don't take Darren Bent, I mutiny to New Zealand.
Nah, just kindding, NZ are in the same group as Italy and I'll never hear the end of it if I support a random team against Italy |

Realistically should be England and USA to go through, and if that was to happen, it'd be likely that one of us would face Germany in the second round.

When the draw was made I felt USA might have trouble with Slovenia. It will be a tough, tough game. Slovenia are a cynical, skillful set of bastards and fiercely proud. I love the World Cup because of games like that. Very, very interesting. Algeria too will not roll over.

I love watching the World Cup. I don't really root for any team though since Canada is the worst soccer/football nation in the world

Will be rooting for USA, Brazil, and Portugal.
If everything goes correctly the Brazil-Portugal group match is going to be worth a based on how good their friendly matches are against each other (except the last one which ended in a Brazilian beat-down of 6-2). |

I filled out a mock World Cup on ESPN.com I believe, and there are some pretty intriguing matches that cold come. What I did (obviously biased) had the U.S. finishing second in the group and then getting a fairly easy round of 16 draw. Will be interesting.
But like ECG said, it's too easy to look at these groups by two top teams. In reality, most World Cup groups have one great team and three good teams that aren't separated by much. Just hope the US doesn't get caught up in their own hype. I'm looking forward to Group A though. Will South Africa get out of their group? If so, who fails, France or Mexico? Lastly, I fully expect the USA-England game to be the most hyped soccer game in US history to this point. It's a Saturday day game here, so everybody can watch it. Plus, the English national team is probably the most popular team in this country. |

Yes but my parents are Portuguese (Azores Islands) and since the Portuguese League is always on tv here, I've been a fan of them.
Brazil is because WC '94 was the 1st World Cup I ever watched on tv and liked how well they played and then learned how rich their soccer history is. USA is because I'm American and it would be nice to generate something similar to WC 2002 since it would both help the MLS popularity and soccer's status here. |

I think my underwear would be damp with precum if events can come together so Henry manages to score an own goal to put France out.
Not a hope of a easy second round game for the USA BCWWF, Serbia had a good qualifying campaign but Germany will run over that group. |

Ray Houghton scores my favourite goal of all time in the same game that Paul McGrath cemented him place as my favourite player of all time by producing the best 90 minutes of football in football history and turned me into an Aston Villa fan. The single greatest football game I'll ever see I'm sure and thats almost a bit depressing given I was 8 at the time. Whats almost better is if I was 5 years older I'm sure Houghtons other famous goal would be my favourite instead, what a hero. OH AH PAUL MCGRATH And because I wish to wax lyrically about him some more for those who don't know Paul McGrath finished his career with basically no cartilage left in his knees, he used to spend all week just doing weights in the gym with no football training at all as his body wasn't up to it then spend 90 minutes on a Saturday man marking an entire attack without moving at all by his pure positional brilliance. |

Ray Houghton = handball
I remember watching that goal live, was about 9 years old. I really can't wait, managed to book the first week and a half of the tournament off work so I'll be able to watch a few games and not have to listen to all the 'new' football fans at work. I'm gonna be cheeky and put a fiver on Brazil not getting out of there group, and England to lose to Germany in the second round. |

World Cup 2010 - Professor proves Germany will win World Cup
Eurosport - Wed, 21 Apr 17:05:00 2010 More Stories
Prof Metin Tolan, a German physics lecturer, has written a formula based on trigonometry which analyses results from previous World Cup finals in order to predict the winner of this summer's tournament. Germany have won the World Cup on three occasions, in 1954, 1974, and 1990 with an average finishing place of 3.7, and Prof Tolan says his formula proves without any doubt that his home country will prevail in South Africa. "It is very simple, all my calculations prove this," he told German magazine "Zeit Wissen". "The last time we won the World Cup was back in 1990 and there have been four tournaments since," explained Tolan. "The average finishing place of the Germany team is 3.7 and the German team wins the title every fourth or fifth World Cup. "Nobody can beat us this year and you can already put the champagne on ice." Prof Tolan is clearly undeterred from his previous failed formulas, after he predicted that Germany would win the last World Cup which they hosted, as Jurgen Klinsmann's side were defeated by eventual victors Italy in the semi-finals. "My formula gave the winner for the following World Cup, this is why it works this time for sure," Tolan explained. The Professor's equations should also help England, who crashed out of the last World Cup after being defeated on penalties by Portugal, as he has a theory for shoot-outs too. "The weakest kicker should take the first penalty, then the second-weakest and so on," he said. "Then you have the greatest chance of scoring as many goals as possible." Germany face Australia, Serbia and Ghana in Group D in the first stage of this summer's finals and could face England as early as the second round. |

...and the pyramid theory said we were going to win the 1998 World Cup. Football isn't played on paper. Nice try, Herr Tolan.

It would be pretty easy to predict a winner for the cup since its always between the Big 4 (Germany, Italy, Brazil, Argentina) as the favorites and then a random team who enters the tournament hot (2010 = Spain) and France depending on their momentum.
