Really surprised with this World Cup to be honest.
I expected England to go in strong as well as Argentina. Both did mediocre at best. Italy did its usual defensive gig which was not surprising and had some luck. |

We get Mars adverts in Scotland saying "C'mon England!" with the St George wrappers and the Pringooooals adverts with Peter Crouch and the News media is the worst, like ITV News referring to England as "We" and all that, even though it's broadcast to the entire UK and BBC News adding shots of the St George's Flag to their Countdown Clock. Again, even though it's broadcast to the entire UK. Personally, it just annoys me the way the English act with the World Cup. The main thing being constantly reffering to 1966. We all get it, you won back then, you don't have to keep going on about it. Even when they drew with USA, the papers and other media were saying "We drew in our first game in '66, we can still win it!". I mean, come the fuck on, that's just going a bit over the top now. Some other things are that if one thing goes wrong (that was caused by an England player) in one of their matches, whoever caused it, is public enemy number 1 and is loathed all across England and you all seem to have a bad habit of resting all your hopes on just one man, even though you have an entire team. Also, I found it funny when on ITV before the England/USA match, they showed you what the ESPN advert for the match was like in America, then Adrian Chiles' puss interrupts it and he says "Oh, get over it". Pot calling the kettle black? 1966, get over it. |

You need to distinguish between the message the media puts out and what a majority of people think. It's cringeworthy to most people here the lengths they go to, but they do whatever they have to shift papers, get viewers, sell product, whatever.
I absolutely loved Euro 2008, and at least part of that was down to the complete lack of hyperbolic bullshit surrounding England. Actually made the pundits do some research for once as well. So I can see that side of things. It does go over the top sometimes though. (Not for one second denying that there a large number of fucking idiots who are happy to blindly believe whatever the papers or whatever say btw. At least you don't have to share a country with them) |

I hate the English football team and enjoy seeing them fail. I have heard people laughably say that they would support England if they played France. Those people need to have a word with themselves. Thierry Henry and France did what we all would do in the same situation, if Robbie Keane had caught a high ball, toe-tapped it round Mexes and rifled it in the top corner, I'd have been fine with that. England are fucking cunts and given that it's not on to bomb them any more then hating their football and rugby teams is a small comfort.

Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer has launched a blistering attack on England's playing style in their opening game at the World Cup. While Fabio Capello's team laboured to a 1-1 draw with the United States, Germany crushed the Australians 4-0. The former German captain, 64, said: "What I saw of the English against the US had very little to do with football. "It looked to me as if the English have gone backwards into the bad old days of kick and rush." Joachim Loew's German side has looked the most impressive so far in South Africa, with the Bild newspaper declaring: "We're going to blow you all away" after their opening win in Durban.
England are hoping for an improvement in performance in forthcoming games against Algeria and Slovenia to enable them to top Group C and avoid a last-16 clash with the Germans - who are the likely winners of Group D, although Ghana and Serbia may prove tougher opposition than Australia. Beckenbauer, captain of his country in the 1966 World Cup final defeat by England and the 1974 victory over The Netherlands, believes England's problems were the result of a shortage of talent in the Premier League. "I am not sure if the England coach Fabio Capello can still change much there," he told South African newspaper the Times. "The English are being punished for the fact that there are very few English players in the Premier League as clubs use better foreign players from all over the world." Capello would no doubt prefer to see more English players in the domestic top flight, but questions have also been raised regarding the team's lack of preparation with the new Jabulani ball being used in South Africa. The ball has been used in domestic football in Germany, France and Argentina since February, but not in England. Altitude is another factor that has been affecting England's squad, with defender John Terry admitting last week that the players were taking time to adapt to the conditions. England are based in Rustenburg, 1,403m above sea level, while Germany are playing their games at sea level in Durban. ------ England excuses are the ball and altitude it would seem. Beckenbauer points to the lack of English players in the Premiership and their tactics. I don't think it matters about how many English players are in the Premiership more players just means more overlooked in favour of the old favourites who have brought us unlimited success before. Pointing out the tactics is fair enough. Bolton would get slated for the way England played against USA. I still think it's down to injured and recovering players making up a lot of the squad plus we are waiting for some to hit form. Need to remove Heskey from the team after the World Cup and play a different system. I reckon we'll get through the group and everyone will think we will win the World Cup again until we are brought back to Earth with a crap performance in the knock out rounds. |

This doesn't even look like a World Cup match. Like 90% of WC matches this year.

Don't think any of the teams are dealing with the altitude very well, the ball flies a lot more.

But this rankings are kind of stupid, really. I wouldn't rank Portugal 3rd and Netherlands 4th.
Well, back to the topic, NZ's gotta win this if they want to have at least a chance of qualifying further. Maybe a shocking win over Paraguay next or something. I'd like that. |

Also, Football isn't even the biggest winter sport here, rugby is, by a million miles. But NZ getting into the World Cup has given it a huge boost.
