The Duellists 7.5/10

It is a tale about a feud between two French cavalry officers during the Napoleonic era, which lasts for 15 years, and involves five duels between them over those years. On one side you have Feroud, played by Harvey Keitel, an arrogant brute who is driven by his ego and his idea of honour. On the other side you have D'Hubert, played by Keith Carradine, both a victim of Feroud's warped inclinations and a prisoner of his own sense of honour.

It's a simple tale, but executed well by director Ridley Scott. I generally don't like American accents in period films/ tv shows, unless set in the US, but I didn't find the accents of Keitel and Carradine distracting.

Oppenheimer - 7.8/10

Was good. I think it was maybe a bit too long though. Went through periods of being boring and then periods of "I'm on the edge of my seat". Could have made something more succinct and it would have been awesome. Also feel like maybe shooting on IMAX cameras is a bit "wasted" on a movie that is mostly just talking heads. Still impressive to see, but compared to his other movies I have seen there that have action sequences in it, it makes this seem less impressive somehow.

Rango is quality, probably the best film Gore Verbinski will ever make and I can’t believe he had much to do with it.

The Big Country - 3/4

I’m onto the tail end of my Western viewing, I saved all of the 2+ hour films for this moment.
Gregory Peck is one of, if not the actual best ever at playing straight laced guys with serious steel behind the veneer. One of my favourite films of all time is “The Million Pound Note” and it’s because Gregory Peck is relentlessly decent and upright throughout. In his western films he has the same quality and it is what separates him from contemporary Western stars. Randolph Scott and Roy Rogers always play the good guy with the heart of gold, but Peck makes it a credible enterprise by having the eloquence to deliver a phenomenal line or speech between fisticuffs and high drama.

As far as the film goes it has the most predictable love story ever put to screen besides some of the most entertaining western shenanigans. Burl Ives steals the film with a “yeah we are low class but we have morals” character that makes it an almost Shakespearean experience. The good is faultless, the bad is evil but the grey area is pure entertainment and it elevates the film from formulaic to fantastic.

You sound like my mother. I watched it, I enjoyed it so you can badger me about something else now.

Did you know that the woman Gregory Peck rejects is the evil mother of the bad guy in Kindergarten Cop? Her fish eyes made me look her up, she’s an ugly broad.

Y tu mamá también was quite the film.

While it was loud and bombastic, there were moments that were simply breathtaking.

Heart of Stone - 6/10

Gal Gadot's new Netflix movie. I deem it a below average movie but not a complete waste of my time. Feel like if they went a different way with the plot it would have been a better movie.

Blue Beetle - 7/10

Was ok and inoffensive. Took no big risks and wasn't anything we haven't seen before. Feel like DC keeps trying hard to make Jaime Reyes "happen" via multiple comic book series, featuring him heavily in cartoons, and now a movie.... but he just never seems to quite catch on.

SPOILER: show
I didn't like the end where Jaime just lets Carapax kill Victoria Kord... felt like a "heroic moment" was coming where Jaime would talk him down and Carapax would fly off to finally "live his own life". A shining heroic moment that shows exactly what kind of hero Jaime has become, saving his enemies and believing in the sanctity of life and all... would have been a "great moment" and put the spotlight on Jaime and that "true kind of heroism" that comes from a "good heart" and all that. Instead, he just kind of watches.

If anything, this movie just made me want a Ted Kord movie since the best parts were The Bug and all of Ted's gadgets. In fact, just doing a Ted Kord movie would have been better than this and more "original". Could have even used the same plot with Victoria Kord taking over the company and using it for the OMAC Project. Having a main hero with no powers who wasn't all grim and didn't have any tragedy or accidents that made him be a hero would have been "unique" too.

Then the post-credits scene where they tease Ted Kord for a sequel is like... "yeah, I really would have just preferred a Ted Kord movie now"

Frankie and Johnny 7/10

A romantic comedy/drama starring Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer. Pacino's character is a little bit too needy and cloying, but Pfeiffer puts in a great performance as someone who has emotionally closed themselves off after successive abusive partners. Some might say, and they did at the time, that Pfeiffer is far too beautiful to play the lonely, dowdy waitress that she portrays in this film, and to a point she is, but her performance outweighs that complaint.

Pacino and Pfeiffer also benefit from some great supporting cast, especially Kate Nelligan as their man-hungry co-worker.

Black Adam 6/10

Not as bad as people said, but still not that good. I would see a sequel, but I’m not disappointed that there won’t be one. Nothing memorable about this movie.

Destor, if you ever want to do another discussion in the entertainment forum make it about the Rock. He’s good and everyone likes him, but all his movies suck or are meh. Why can’t he make a good movie?

The Fisher King 7/10

A Terry Gilliam film starring Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges.

Bridges plays a radio shock jock, whose advice to a radio caller leads to the latter shooting up a night club, killing seven people. Several years later, having spiralled into alcoholism and depression, Bridges encounters the husband of one of the victims of that shooting, who is now homeless and dealing with mental illness. Thus, begins a tale of weirdness and redemption.

It's a Gilliam film, so if you like his off-kiltered brand (Brazil, 12 Monkeys, etc), you'll probably like this one. Williams puts in one of his better performances.

Funny enough i considered that but ive seen basically none of his big box office successes. Rock films ive seen:

1. Moana- his most culturally significant film easily and its great.

2.Southland Tales- i loved it

3. Be Cool- forgettable

4. Pain and Gain- cant be sure i finished this one

5. Walking Tall- not a bad action flick

6. The Rundown- ok at best

7. The Scorpian King- shouldve been straight to DVD

8. The Mummy Returns- love this movie but he's not really in it

That said hes had some huge box office wins. At a point he was the highest paid actor in Hollywood so theres was clearly a market for his generic action films (that i totally passed on.) But ultimately i felt like id seen so little, especially of his box office wins, that i really coukdnt contribute to a conversation about it.

Emily the Criminal- 7/10

Ate all my typing time of the rock post. Not a bad film. Plaza is really good here. Shes not very versatile as an actress but when she's in her niche i love her and she carries the dramatic role really well.

The film on the surface attempts to illuminate a point about the american debt crisis but very subtly underneath that is a strong counter point against the surface level clamorings. The counterpoint is subtle but its there and its appreciated.

The Russia House 7.3/10

An espionage film starring Sean Connery, Michelle Pfeiffer, Roy Scheider and James Fox.

Connery plays a book publisher who is contacted by a Russian scientist, via an intermediary and Russian publicist played by Pfeiffer, who wants Connery's character to publish Russian military secrets about the ineffectiveness of the country's nuclear armaments. The scientist's book to Connery is intercepted by British Intelligence, who subsequently enlist him to go to Russia to figure out whether what they have is actually credible, which involves going through Pfeiffer's character.

This is an old style of film; no shootouts, no explosions, no chases. It is all about the story. I think it could of done with a bit more pep, but perhaps that is just my modern sensibilities. The ending is also a little bit too overly optimistic. However, I enjoyed it all the same. It was a bit weird watching Connery mooning over Pfeiffer, considering the age difference (I can't blame him; she is stunning in this film). Both leads turn in top notch performances; Connery actually felt like he was putting effort into the role, rather than relying on his natural charisma to get through a picture.

It was also great to see a movie set in Russia actually be filmed in said country. I believe it was the first western movie to be done so.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) - 8/10

Its certainly a challenging film. It lives in metaphor wrapped in greek mythos and for a general viewing audience this is the kind of the film that would leave most people asking not only what did they watch but why. For those who enjoy a dense film riddled with layer upon layer of deep subtext you'll find this pretty rich.

Its a comedy blacker than midnight that skirts around into psychological horror at will.
Lanthimos other film i loved, The Lobster, is 70% comedy where this is maybe 20% or less though. Which is fine of course but if you're expecting something tonally similar this isnt it.

The acting (Leads are Colin Ferral, Nicole Kidman and Barry Keoghan,) is really excellent but like The Lobster its unconventional. The dialogue in delivery and writing is rigid. Like cardboard. Its unnatural and delivered in a way that feels false. Like we're spectators at an alien zoo trying to understand how these creatures interact with one another.

This falsness is deliberate though. The cinematography has the same wrongness about it. Everything is shot with the framing off. Characters faces oddly out of frame or off center in weird ways. The score often runs antagonistic to the scenes. All deliberate. The film using your cinema vocabulary to allow you to fill the gaps emotionally but also narratively.

All this comes together for a very weird retelling of a greek myth in a film that never holds your hand. If you like weird and darkly funny morality tales this is the kind of movie you can watch a multiple times, and you probably should.

Shazam: Fury of the Gods! 7/10

I could bump it higher. This movie is better when Zachary Levi is the only superhero.

When the movie started out I thought it was going to be really bad, but I was wrong. I enjoyed it, and I think this is actually a good family movie. Also to be fair there isn’t anything original or great in this, but it was a good watch.

This is another DC movie that’s definitely not as bad as people say, and mark another loss for The Rock since is movie is weaker of the two.

Cocain Bear - 5/10

I didnt choose to watch this but it wasnt as bad as i expected. Film spends a bit too much time on things we dont care about. IE not bears murdering hikers. When it is in its element its pretty funny and theres a few jokes that really landed. Though i do have to say i dont think the writer has ever done cocain. Also there's a fight scene in a bathroom thats clearly choreographed by someone thats only ever had fights described to them.

All that said this is a fitting film for Ray Liotta to go out on as it perfectly encapsulates how mediocre most his films were. Formulaic and uninspired.

Dangerous Liaisons 7.5/10

Period drama starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, and very young Keanu Reeves and Uma Thurman.

Glenn Close and John Malkovich are great in the two central roles of master manipulators and competitors/lovers; their scenes snap, crackle and pop. Pfeiffer also stands out in the supporting role, though Malkovich's seduction of her does not entirely convince, which I think was perhaps down to some poor editing choices, but that is a trifle. Keanu is the one dud in the casting; he's just not meant for period dramas.

The Age of Innocence 7/10

A Martin Scorsese film, minus the gangsters and the bloodshed, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder. All three give fine performances in a tale of 1870s New York society, scandal, shattered dreams and unfulfilled desires.

Anthony Starr is menacing even without Superpowers and the movie built the suspense before crapping on everything that was making the movie work in the last act.
