The XFL is tanking in ratings
In three weeks, the XFL went from an average of 3.1 million viewers to 1.61 million viewers.

My gut tells me this league won't have a season in 2021. Do you think it will rebound?

It could go either way. I don’t think there was really the demand for another football league that many will claim. It’s always been a bit of a forced issue. The ratings dropping is not surprising. The plan has always been shock and awe. The ratings just need to be good enough. If they can power through with Vince’s money, it’s possible that it will gain, not really traction, per se, but people might be like “oh, this one is sticking around, I’ll check it out.”

I can see Vince pushing through to a second and third season just to be stubborn about things. After that, it’s all about the TV rights money and how desperate the industry is.

I've read attendance has increased in a few cities for games and dropped significantly in a few others. If the average rating ends up staying under 2 million I can't see season 2 getting much promo if it happens.

Probably not, unless Vince pays for it or has enough sway to convince them to go hard with it. There’s potential there in troubling TV times. Abandoning it early is pretty much a self-fulfilling prophecy. I think these bumps were somewhat expected. Well, they should have been.

These ratings have to be higher than anything else non NFL related to football.

Rebound, probably not but they still very likely are getting a second season.

Now if the second season tanks or struggles just as bad with declining viewership, then all bets are off on them getting a third season. All depends on if FOX and ABC are still happy with XFL's low viewership by that point.

Sigh, you are thinking of this is a 2001 sense. Vince has no partners, the league will continue going until Vince decides he doesn't want to foot the bill anymore.

It may not remain on ABC or Fox, but ESPN and FS1 will always pick live content to air.

Then again, have you ever watched ABC or Fox on weekend afternoons when it's not airing sports? Half the time it is infomercials. XFL has to be a bigger draw than those.

XFL is probably doing better than a lot of things that aired in that timeframe, so that is a plus. 2nd year prob likely after all.

From everything I've read, Vince is committed for 3 years and $500,000,000 plus whatever the league makes.

The gamble is that going into year 4 he can score some lucrative TV deals and get all his money back, then year 5+ he would be making another boatload of money.

If it is still around after year 3 I could easily see them landing a $250 million from 2 different Networks like ABC and Fox.

Even at that price it would be a steal compared to other sports leagues.

It's already better than the original from the standpoint of exposure and competitive play. On the first outing, they usually had the shit luck of televising the two worst of the four games. With how this one is structured, they air all four games, and they've very rarely just gotten out of hand. They're also ACTUALLY FUCKING TELEVISED, unlike the AAF games (I think I was able to watch a total of like two, and their "streaming app" just had the ball placement and arrows bullshit).

You also have to factor in that people are taking a "wait and see" approach to this leauge, since people keep bringing up not only the previous failure and the recent folding of the AAF, and in some conversations, the USFL. If they keep doing what they're doing, there is no reason why this can't succeed, though. I mean, this same weekend, they just had a major game for, what, the 25th anneversary of MLS, and America collectively doesn't give a fuck about soccer the way the rest of the world does. Expecting a spring league to have NFL numbers off the top is ridiculous. But it'll do well enough, and hopefully then endgame plays out as planned: a feeder system to the NFL that is way more accessable to the true target audience than NFL Europe was. Remember NFL Europe? Yeah, and that lasted multiple seasons with pretty much the same approach the current XFL is taking, but with the ill advised strategy of trying to get the EU to love the pigskin and toss around the idea of actual league expansion in spite of the logisitcal nightmare.
